Iron Vigil (WIP) [50k+ Words]

Hello everyone,

About me

I have been playing IF games since before I knew what IF stood for when I was like 12. Zombie Exodus was my very first game, and it has a place deep in my heart. I started writing my own IF back in December of 2025, working on a Wild West game, but I took a long break due to school. I wanted to refine my writing skills, so I decided to start another game. I do not plan on finishing this anytime soon, but I would greatly appreciate any feedback about my style, grammar, code, or anything that could help me improve in general. I do eventually want to start and finish my own IF, but I want it to be something I’m truly passionate about, and I’m just not passionate about robots and monsters.

Inspirations

My inspirations are of course anything with mechs in it, which also happen to include giant monsters – Specifically Pacific Rim and Godzilla. Some characters are inspired by shows such as Invincible, and other IFs.

Synopsis:
It’s 2087, and the Pacific Ocean is not what it used to be. Ten years ago the Kaiju came ashore for the first time and the world learned that the deep water it had always treated as empty was not. FORGE built the Vigils. The Vigils hold the line between monsters and humans. And somewhere at the bottom of the Mariana Trench, eleven kilometers down, something warm sits in the dark and broadcasts a signal that nobody in the program is supposed to know about.

Naturally, the responsibility of finding out falls to you.

Become a student in the Vigil Pilot Program, pilot Vigils, fight Kaiju, and figure out the mystery that sits at the bottom of the ocean.

Romanceable Characters

Romance:

Ryn Nakamura – Gender Selectable
Ryn’s parents were Vigil Pilots, and they grew up on military bases around the Pacific. They want to follow in their steps and become a Vigil Pilot themself. You and them will share many experiences together, good, bad, and weird.

Caleb/Chloe - Gender Selectable
C is brand new to the whole “Vigil Pilot” thing. They survived a Kaiju attack in San Diego years ago, and use humor as their weapon of choice.

Cas Mercer - Male
Cas is Australian born and bred, but was also born with a little bit of weird in him. He’s also new to being a Vigil Pilot, so don’t go too hard on him.

Lena Vasquez - Female
Lena is a fellow Vigil Pilot-In-Training and has several things in common with you. Almost too many… Befriend, Romance, or Ignore her.

More to be added over time as they’re introduced in the game.

Word Count

Current status: The game contains a short prologue, and two chapters of content at a total of 50k+ words. The demo ends after Chapter 2.

Great so far. I remember there was another story I used to try to keep track of that was similar to this , but then I lost track of it. Thank you for filling the void.

Enjoying the demo so far though I have noticed multiple instances of Caleb being referred to by male and female pronouns often in same paragraph.

I have not started reading yet, but I would just caution mirroring the Pacific Rim lore so much without official WRITTEN authorization because they have made so much money off of it. It’s just me, I’ve worked in the government for 22 years, but I would side on caution.

I would change Jaeger to mecha.
Move it from Pacific Ocean to maybe Atlantic, or Indian…

It’s a CYA thing, in case you want to publish this later.

I just wanted to thank you guys for the nice comments. I plan on finishing Chapter 2 sometime this weekend, but I’m not sure how much more I’ll work on this project past that. It definitely helps motivate me to share my work though!

If I ever do get close to finishing this project I likely will change the names of some things like Jaegers due to the name already being used in many other pieces of media.

I’m very grateful to those who have spent their time to read through the demo, and please feel free to comment anything you want. Do you like the characters? Is the plot interesting? Are there too many or not enough choices? Etc.

Thank you again! If this project does get enough interest then I will look into finishing it fully.

pacific rim was such a banger of a movie such a shame they never made a sequel. but hey more room for fanworks and homages to not royally mess up that idea eh?

color us fully interested to see this completed. all the better if you switch up the names and terms to make it your own thing. maybe make up some new original lore to add in too. like maybe give us a different in universe reason for drifting (with a new name like pilot synchronization or something) than just brain strain. or maybe remove the multi pilot requirement entirely to differentiate yourself (keep it as an optional thing for more efficiency or something since we do have a drift partner)

There is a sequel: Pacific Rim: Uprising came out in 2018: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2557478/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_3_tt_8_nm_0_in_0_q_pacific%20rim

nope, never happened.

im joking. that movie was such hot garbage (hence my royally mess up hint) most pacific rim fans such as myself always jokingly deny its existence. like the john cena invisible thing. closest thing we got was pacific rim the black, but even that was mid at best compared to pr1

Ah, like the imaginary film Highlander 2: The Quickening.

yeah imagine if they actually made a sequel to highlander, thatd be nuts

quick question to the author are our weapons all built in or will we get the choice to customize em later?

oh by the way when you rename the jaegers, iron vigil (or just vigil) from the title sounds like a great choice already

First, I just want to say I have heard the Pacific Rim sequels weren’t that good, but even as a kid I loved the first one! As for the weapons, some scenes are more about combat choice (choosing a melee option if you’re good at melee, etc.) but whenever the MC gets their own Jaeger/Vigil I’ll probably add the option to customize your loadout.

I do have the story planned out already, but I do like the idea of allowing the player to have control of the name, loadout, and appearance. The only reason I’m hesitant is because of the plot, which you’ll understand if I ever get to finishing this game lol. Also, I appreciate every question you ask, as it helps me figure out what does and doesn’t make sense.

Lastly, since you guys do seem at least mildly interested, I’ll try finishing the first Act, which contains 4 chapters. There are 3 planned Acts with each having 4-5 chapters. The first Act is mainly is about your student life, but I don’t want to spoil what comes after!

hmm so i checked that little about me part of your intro post. i think if you just wanna use this as a stepping stone for writing an if of something you are passionate about later, its no problem. art should always be about what you like, not just pleasing others.

that being said if you wanna complete this one too or maybe even end up enjoying robots and monsters along the way i certainly wont complain. all up to you.

This is past the point of inspiration and fully into copyright claim. You didn’t even change the name of the robots.

Nothing wrong with fanfiction but you’re going to be fighting an uphill battle to do anything more with this project than post it to the forum.

Yep, I decided to change the names already but haven’t updated the demo until I finish chapter 2. Thanks for the comment! This game was originally just for practice anyway.

Love Pacific Rim but maybe switch up the terms, I’m gonna throw in some ideas: like Category to Class or Type, base the threat level on letters or use the Greek alphabet, Jaeger to Venator or Cazador

Thank you guys for the nice comments! I’ve been busy recently, but now that this semester of school is over I’ll be able to get more work done. Expect the rest of chapter 2 (10k+ more words) sometime before this friday!
