Interest Check Thread

Starting easy is always a good idea :))
And the length of a game don’t determine its value. ‘A long weekend’ is short but well executed and interesting, so if you wanna write a short game about horses, go for it man

When you said you wanted to make a story about horses, I immediately remembered the mythological story about horses in my country, then Tatsuya, in the SoH 4 side story: Kohaku’s rodeo, and also a movie I vaguely remember being titled “War Horse,” maybe? which tells the story of the Bay Irish hunter. If you know about horses and tell the story in an interesting way, I think people will be interested. I’m also curious.

Writing something short that’s more of an entertainment pill sounds cool and I personally wish there were more stories like that. Hopefully at some point I’ll see an update on that idea but for now good luck and remember to have fun writing and learning from it.

Personally I’m not that into horses but a 30 minute to an hour worth of a read makes it more likely I will try it just because I got nothing better to do and I assume other people would too.

I am thinking of writing a new wip, but I am undecided which one to pursue. I have already written a few things on both but I would like to get your opinion so you can see which one you find more interesting? The one you like the best will be the one I will continue.

Duty - An Arthurian story.
They say that each person’s destiny is predetermined at birth.
They say that it cannot be avoided, that no matter what you do, nothing will change.
Are they wrong?
It is a simple question, which may have a somewhat simple answer. Depending on one’s point of view, what they believe, or what they choose to believe.

From Merlin’s point of view, you are the one chosen to bring destruction, the one they already call the dark wizard, the one they do not know the name of but are already looking for, the one they call the traitor.

You are Mordred, second cousin of Arthur Pendragon and Morgana Le Fay, champion and spy of the Lady of the Lake.

But more than that, a half fae wizard, hidden among the most loyal knights of King Uther Pendragon. The one who will bring revolution or the destruction of all kingdoms.

Will you be able to stay hidden? Or will they discover who and what you are? Will you be able to win the loyalty of the other knights and more importantly, of Arthur? Will you fully follow the orders of the Lady of the Lake or will you rebel against her?

But no matter what, you must do your duty. Whether you are a faithful and honorable knight, or a bloodthirsty traitor. It is your choice to make.

NEW ERA

It is a long ways off but I have a working idea for a Science Fantasy Space Opera story. Aliens, magic, pets, swords, lasers, mecha, space battles, etc. I was wondering about the thought of three controlled main characters that are all part of the same team.

What are people’s thoughts on multiple main characters in choice games?

Personally, I don’t think multiple MC’s can work that well in IF. I just think it’ll get way too complicated. I would recommend choosing one of them to be the MC, and then let the other two make their own choices through out the story. You don’t have to diminish their importance just because we won’t play as them. And you can always do pov jumps to other characters for a scene, if you think they’re doing something the player should see

There are some WIPs with multiple MC’s. For instance, The Cursed Lady and The Weakest Knight (Updated: 3/24/2019) (2 MC’s) and Divided We Fall- A Spanish Civil War WIP (4 MCs) and City of Immortals by Rotten_games (on itch.io, with 2 MCs). So there is precedent. If you are interested on the idea, I think it might be worth a try. I personally think it’s an interesting concept - chalenging, of course, but with potencial.

Not my stubborn ass doing literally what you recommend for people not to do in my own IF :dotted_line_face:.

Though mine has you pick a perspective life at the start that you follow throughout the story rather than having multiple people in the same playthrough.

Response:
I mean, I think the trick I’m using right now is ensuring I like each perspective so I can enjoy writing them on their own. I am just worried it won’t live up to your own interest since I’m relatively new to writing actual stories! I am stubborn though, so at least I have that going for me. I am probably going to rewrite part of one of them though since I am finding myself bored by it lol.

Here is hoping that my background of literate roleplay and DND will help carry my ass across the finish line.

Ever time you talk about your WIP I become more interested in it, but I also become a little more worried :joy:. I think it can work, you just need to be careful with how you do

hard no for me. i don’t even like playing on other people’s pov.

It sometimes work, but most people will give it a hard NO(me included). For me it’s just stressful to keep track of two PCs stats

I’ve played with the idea of letting the player choose if they would want to have multiple ones or just select one.

I like the idea but I’m iffy on the thought of three main characters. I don’t really like the idea of having to track the stats of three different characters we control. Granted there are some WIPs that pull this off very well. Although it is your idea so you do what you think is best.

What if you cannot see the stats? What if you only say a list of traits you chose in the story?

I like the idea of being a vampire trying to figure out who the murderer is while trying to keep an eye on the hunters

While multiple MCs can work it’s very try to pull off. Now if it was switching povs then it’s still to pull off but not as hard as controlling them all at once. Personally I would either like the choice to just pick one mc or if we did pick the 3 MC choice the pov would change but it just depends on what works for ur narrative

I like the idea of traits. But again it is your story and if having stats fits the story more you should stick with that.

Hi all, long time lurker and (almost) first time poster here with a project idea that’s been percolating for a year or two now. I recently made decent progress on it thanks to NaNoWriMo, and it’s made the jump from an idea for a rainy day to an actual project under development.

Please excuse any formatting weirdness, I’m typing this out on mobile between meetings.

  • The World

Set in an alternative earth following a terrible Cataclysm that brought humanity to the brink, and left behind a world wracked by storms. Nations (such as they were in the 1500s) fell, and were reborn from the ashes over the course of centuries.
Some, such as the Kingdom of Albion, or the French Empire, regaining much of their former strength. Others, like the Republic of the Low Countries became something very different.

But long gone are the days of struggle, replaced by the age of progress. Technology and industry are the new driving forces, with steam powered airships plying the trade lanes in the sky and new terrifying weapons beginning to dominate on the ground. Proxy wars and border conflicts are slowly shaping Europe into something new.

  • The Story

This story picks up with a main character returning home to Albion following a particularly disastrous military expedition, wherein the French Empire drove Albion out of an allied German city state, tightening the French grip on Germany and causing notable embarrassment to the political establishment.

Given their association with the war, the main character finds the army no longer has any use for their services. Finding a new career with such a damaged reputation proves to be difficult, until they’re contacted by Royal Intelligence and not so delicately informed that they will be serving Albion once more.

Attacks on Royal Intelligence have increased massively, secret documents that could change the course of airship combat have been stolen by parties unknown, and the main character is in the middle of it all. They must adapt to their new career, work with a new team of people, and prevent those documents from falling into the wrong hands (if they haven’t already).

  • General info

This is one I’ve been thinking about for a while, and I have a few chapters written already, though they’re currently going through a major editing.
I’m aiming for this to be a relatively chill experience mechanically, with forgiving stat checks that are more likely to lead to branches of the story than death. Failure will hopefully be less about punishment and more about alternatives.

I have further notes on this but I’m aware I’ve thrown together a chunky little block of text already, so I’ll leave this post for now. Happy to answer any questions, and hopefully you see something you like.

Hey everyone.

Just came by to say both my WIP topic and demo will be going live in about ten days. The official title is Smalltown: Butterfly Effect.

I’d like to say thanks to @StarFoxed for making that suggestion all those weeks ago.

I’ll be dropping a more appropriate synopsis this weekend to explain what the story is all about so far.

Thanks to everyone who’s contributed. Can’t wait to finally put this out.
