I'm writing a Greek Mythology IF; give me some ideas on what characters/heroes/deities you'd like to see in it!

Ye, pretty self-explanatory title. I currently have the outline of an adventure character-driven IF that takes place in Ancient Hellas(Greece) during the height of the Age of Gods. I’m not keen on giving a release date for the demo anytime soon cause its my first time writing an IF and i’d rather not disappoint anyone, myself included, with an unrealistic expectation as I learn the intricacies of coding; but I am still aiming for mid-2025 at the latest for a demo drop.

So while I already have a cast of characters/ROs that will be major players in my story/game ready, I still wanted to hear some opinions on what character you would like to see and interact with in an IF like this, and why. Timeline wise the story’s gonna be set sometime around 1300BC, a whole generation before the Trojan War, so don’t expect any of the titular mortal heroes of the Illiad or Oddessy to show up. Any more information might end up being a spoiler, but a little hint on what my tale will tackle— the namesake of Ody’s dog miiiight have an integral part to play in the plot of the game;)

So that’s enought exposition—give me some names! Preferably some more underrated or lowkey characters, ol’ Heracles and Perseus and Medusa have already gotten plenty of screen-time in a lot of recent media (not that they won’t show up here as cameos, quest givers, ROs, boss-fights, or maybe all of the above? Order of events subject to change;)) So give me your undergods (heh), the quirky little guys that don’t have enough screen-time in most media but you’d love to see explored more! Euryale and Stheno the two Gorgon sisters of Medusa, the golden giant Chrysaor that leapt out of her severed head, sentient automatons, a weirdly high number of sentient dragons—there are a lot of characters that are really interesting that i believe can be explored, and i’d like your thoughts on any such personal favourite! Thanks for taking the time to read this, and hopefully interacting with this thread! Please share your ideas as I’d love to go through them all!

All those tidy little minor-goddess sisterhoods: Fates, Furies, Graces, Hours, and Muses.

Are Demigods/-goddesses RO’s as well or only Gods/Goddesses? (So many s :joy: )

Always felt that Hercules and Perseus have greatly overshadowed the presence of Jason and the Argonauts and I’ve always wished to either see them on the big screen or as an IF.

Also, a romance IF involving Orion and Artemis also sounds really interesting if done right.

I like Theseus, myself, but maybe that’s just for the academic pun. Also I don’t know how overused he is.

A whole generation before the Trojan war.

Nice! I think timewise it was around the Argonauts, the seven against Thebes, Centauromachy and the Calydonian boar hunt. All four could give you a huge cast of heroes to choose from if you want to add some of their underdogs.

My favourites would be the two old guys of Iliad, Nestor and Philoctetes but young. Philoctetes in particular because he was done dirty in the first ten years of the war, they brought him back and he got the job done.

Tiresias, the guy who was turned into a woman for seven years and even had children and then got turned back into a man. I always wondered what that would do to someone, have your whole identity changed against your will and when you’re getting used to it, get it changed again.

I also, for some reason, really like the brothers Hypnos and Thanatos.

I’d highly recommend using Theoi as a diving board into lesser-known gods and stories to adapt. You can find out about all sorts of gods and obscure connections there.

Not sure i’d classify the three immortal ladies capable to seeing the strands of fate and weaving the destiny of mortal and divine alike as ‘minor’ :grimacing: but yeah, the number three comes up a lot in greek myth, and i’ll certainly be trying to do justice to the various sisterhood triads if/when they come up in the story!

not the Furies though, cause they’d be busy with work in the Underworld! so there’s no way you’d meet… right? :eyes: there’s no way you’d follow the tried and true method of every other major hero and try to sneak into the Underworld right? you wouldn’t do that to poor over-worked Hades and increase his paperwork—WHAT DO YOU MEAN CERBERUS NEEDS PETS, GET BACK HERE HE’S WELL LOVED DON’T JUMP INTO THAT SUSPICIOUSLY PLACED CAVE OF DAMNATION, GET BACK HERE—!!! :woman_cartwheeling: :hole: :palm_down_hand: :dog: :dog: :dog:

Oh, absolutely! Currently the roster of ROs includes a dude (himbo :innocent: ), another dude (pretty-boy with crippling insecurity :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: :smiling_face_with_tear:), a witchy-lady (very cutesy, very demure, positively murderous :smiling_imp: :mage:), a girl-boss (consumed by revenge and doomed by the narrative? :crossed_swords: :drop_of_blood: nah, i’m sure you can fix her (lol, lmao even)), at least three demi-god(ess)s with various levels of daddy issues (are you really surprised though?), and a cat :cat2:, bird :dove:, arachnid :spider_web:, and cyborg :robot: respectively (no i will not elaborate).

And finally at the time of writing you will be able to have a full romance with atleast one Olympian :coin: — beware though, this course of action will royally piss of some heavy hitters in the divine circles, so proceed with caution—and that’s only if the diety in question doesn’t turn you into a worm and swallow you whole for daring to try and woo them :worm:!

see, Artemis is a dilemma for me personally, cause there are two main ways her character is depicted in myth and media alike—one where she’s the aro-ace prejudiced man-killing badass(as a dude i completely understand and condone her actions for the time period lol). But i also love the inherent tragedy and the absolute drama of the Artemis/Orion love story—forbidden love, star-crossed lovers (heh), doomed to end in tragedy; Are you kidding me? its too juicy to not explore! But I also don’t want her to a one dimensional maiden in mourning when her lore is so rich and complex! i’m probably gonna try and find a balance between the two approaches—its not gonna be easy, but that’s what’s gonna make writing her all that much more interesting!

ohhhhh, he is gonna be there just for PC and gang to beat the crap outta him—Theseus is a great example of good intentions getting twisted by power and fame. who knows, maybe you could even influence him to change his ways and try to gain redemption (or sacrifice him in a bloody and witchy ritual to gain his demi-god powers for yourself, nobody said you have to be the ggod guy here :smiling_imp:)

Hmmmm, honestly a solid idea that I hadn’t considered before. there characters are certainly interesting enough to warrent roles in the plot—i’ll certainly think about this, thanks for the ideas!

Okay, I did NOT know about this part of his lore :flushed: ! i thought he was just the guy who spouted prophesies in the Oddessy and Oedious rex, but looking a little deeper shows that his lore is a lot more interesing that that! yep, thanks for mentioning him, he just became a muvh major part of the plot a particular ROs backstory and character arc with his portfolio, so rejoice!

Thanks a lot, i’ll be sure to check it out!

Fair. Definitely not minor in their influence, and by some accounts even the gods themselves are subject to their decrees, but they don’t quite exide the Main Character Energy the Olympians or major Chthonic deities do, probably because they’re too busy weaving our destinies to get into juicy drama.

I actually almost named Cerberus as a character I’d like to see in your story. People always talk about his three heads, and no one ever gets into the corollary that this means he has SIX EARS. And they all need scritching!

I rarely if ever see Nemesis or Eris brought up. Especially surprising about the latter considering Eris was the entire cause of the Trojan war.

Metis, no one talks about metis. Zeus’s first wife with a prophecy that would usurp the pantheon.

Never happened since zeus somehow tricked her into becoming a fly and swallowed her.

What if he didnt or couldnt?

I find Eros and Psyche very interesting! And by extension Eros’ parents Aphrodite and Ares, and the other Erotes besides Eros (Himeros, Hermaphroditus, Anteros, Pothos, Hedylogos, Hymenaeus, and Phthonus). Most of these are part of Aphrodite’s “Retinue”, which also includes the Charites (Aglaea, Euphrosyne, and Thalia). Greek mythology is so rich and interesting! :star_struck:

Jason of Argonaut fame is a bit of a **** and not the brightest light in the harbour though.

Summary

Pelias: Oh of course I’ll give you the throne if you go get that nigh impossible to access golden fleece for me.
Jason: Yeah sounds like a great quest! Let me assemble my team.
Pelias: Sucker… I mean yes, go forth and prove yourself on this quest worthy of your greatness. Don’t worry, I’ll keep the throne warm for you and totally pinky swear to abdicate if… I mean when you get back.

Also Jason: I’ve got a powerful sorceress wife, who is related to the titans and has a track record of killing people as method of dealing with problems. I’m sure she won’t mind being cast off with the kids while I go marry a “proper” princess so I can get a throne. I’m sure Hera who has been helping me will be totally down with me abandoning my family given she’s the deity of marriage and all that. What could go wrong?

I mean I’d be team Medea all the way if she wasn’t quite so murdery. It kind of becomes a situation of ETAH in the end.

Oh they totally wandered around the mortal realms tormenting people before dragging them down to the underworld. Even Apollo can’t completely stop them events were under their jurisdiction (although he’d get sneaky about it- see Orestes.)

I would love some weird Dionysian cult activities.

It’s the generation before Troy, so maybe a little Nestor cameo or Peleus cameo? Or could we meet Thetis before she was forced to marry Peleus? Foreshadowing of events to come is always fun.

Some things
-If playing as a demigod to be able to choose who the godly parent is

  • Maybe a neutral Hades would be better
  • The imprisoned titans as lurking antagonists wanting to regain power
  • Maybe foreign champions of other gods
