I'm Sorry, But I Think We Should See Other People - ROs You Hate

I mean…they get the cool shit and force lightning. Id definitely be a sith.

Since three of my favourite ROs are Winter, Manerkol, and Black Magic who’s also been mentioned several times in this thread, I suppose I’d better answer this…

Playing these games isn’t about choosing the most morally upright RO from the selection offered, and trying to be the best possible person. It can be, if that’s what you want. But that’s not what I, personally, tend to find most fun or cathartic. There’s plenty of pure and righteous heroes out there already, and I often turn to CoG to get the type of narratives I don’t see elsewhere.

A would-be hero who ends up falling for the Dark Lord, and has to figure out who he’s most loyal to? That’s a more interesting story to me, than a straightforward crusade of Good Guys vs Bad Guys. A pair of idiots with superpowers who get so kicked around by the system, they end up destroying it all? More interesting than someone who plays by the rules and is forced to compromise, like we all have to do in real life. Whatever the hell is going on with Winter in the Evertree Saga? Really, really interesting! I enjoy making MCs who fit with these situations, trying to guess what will happen next and being completely surprised anyway.

Why do I love one character who did a Very Bad Thing, but not like another who did a Moderately Annoying Thing? Because it’s fiction, so the scales aren’t properly balanced. Good characters don’t always need to be good, so long as they’re engaging or memorable or just push the right buttons for that particular reader.

I mean, I do also love Farah from Wayhaven, she is my precious sunshine princess and I will protect her from the world, so I don’t always look at the shadiest possible option and go ‘I want that one’. Sometimes I actually like the heroes and hate the villains! But either way is fine, because no real people are being harmed in the course of our make-believe adventures.

Well, there’s a difference between having a generally submissive personality type (which I’m not too comfortable with, in most cases), and enjoying playing a submissive role specifically in the bedroom (where Winter is undoubtedly the boss, and long may they continue to be).

:sob::sob::sob: It was kinda disappointing that Ollie was done so dirty. Like, we just have to accept that their whole personality was a fake cover so their true self could hide themself or wthv? And i know they tell us that (when it’s revealed ollie was that hero that I don’t remember their name all along) you can feel ollie it’s still there or smth, but it made me feel like all the things MC and Ollie went through together were just… pointless. Why would they matter if Ollie isn’t even real after all? :sob:

That line. Made me so angry. I can’t remember if I kept reading past that scene, I may’ve quit right there.

Well shit, now I feel a lot less sorry that I gave up on the game midway through book three, sounds like my gut feeling about Ollie was justified after all.

I sped through most of the game after everyone got separated near the beginning (which I also hated), looking forward to a touching and emotional reunion with Oli, who, of course, was the last to be returned. NOPE DENIED. :rage:

Thank goodness for fanfic.

Considering that entire book felt empty, yes you did.

Oh, I know, but what I mean (and could’ve explained better) is: In a normal relationship there’s a clear line drawn between what’s acceptable in and outside of the bedroom, and both parties agree and consent to these rules. That’s obviously not the case here, and while you can play an MC who’s able to differentiate between the two and acts accordingly, Winter doesn’t (either because they don’t want to or they’re not able to), so I personally feel every time you let them dominate you in bed you’re working against your own interests outside of bed and are sabotaging any equality you’ve established otherwise so far, because they see it as another confirmation of you having no willpower when it comes to them, and that it’s okay to take advantage of you.
I didn’t mean to criticize your MC or style of playing, maybe it came across like that, it’s just a very, very tricky route you picked there, in my opinion.

I usually try every RO if I like the game. Even the ones I personally don’t like, I can sometimes enjoy it and have some fun in it and sometimes it’s a big “nope”, but I love to explore all options.

I actually really love it when characters are mean to us and we can stand our ground and call them out on it, or we can be mean back. Which I had bit of problem with A from Wayhaven, because after book 1 your character acts as if they were friends for a longer time and nothing bad ever happened between them. A’s route as a whole was really hard for me to get through because of their constant disrespect of detective and huge ego problems. But it works for some people so I don’t judge if you’re into it.

But there is an RO I actually absolutely despise and I would like to wish Jun/ko a very unpleasant and never-ending stay in hell.

Maybe it says something unfortunate about me as a person, but one of my favorite things to do is drive A up a wall by not kowtowing to her authority like she wants. Hey, she doesn’t want to respect my job and the authority I carry and the duties I have, she doesn’t get to demand the opposite of me!

I totally get that! I love doing that as well.

Cressida (Keeper series)
When I was exploring Cresside romance route the feelings were all fake anytime my mc ask how she feel about him it like she practically considering her options as if I am a tool for her own goals for popularity and status this is like dating Roxana without the empathy and just manipulation to add salt to injury the only good thing in this route is just dating her for her family name and finding out a prophecy about the mc to add more plot to the story

I’m curious about Hayden Winter now
Might go and play whichever game he’s in and report back here if I hate him

Winter’s from the second game of the Evertree Saga, Sordwin. It’s a very good series so far (I love the “you can upgrade your character more the more things you learn”, sort of like an experience point system), even if I DO have to put up with the existence of Winter to play the second one.

Seeing how you’re using male pronouns for them: If you’re only interested in romancing men, you should maybe know that Hayden is not a typical genderflippable RO with a binary gender that is tied to your character’s orientation. It’s a bit more complicated, but they’re nonbinary. Just thought it might be useful to know going in, because some prefer binary ROs.

Oh thank you for letting me know!
I’ll still have a play and see how it goes.

For me McCready from Monsters.

The guy, not only looks like an ugly bastard from h*ntai, is also abusive with a holier-than-thou attitude. Literally has zero redeeming quality at all. Not sure why he’s a RO in the first place.

Sonya is pretty fucked up too, but at least she’s a bit complex.

Then again, every RO in Monsters are crazy in the head. They are “monsters” after all…

Ok, I played Sordwin. It was a bit more interesting than the first book, but still no revelation. I think I can’t convince myself to combination: typical fantasy world + MC solving mysteries like some Sherlock Holmes.

As for Winter… meh. They didn’t impress. Yeah, quite shitty character and creepy in its own way. But they didn’t particularly shock me. Maybe because I read spoilers about their exploits. And maybe because I have read SoH.
Compared to Jun, who is huge saber-toothed tiger, Winter is a kitten.

I mean, saber-toothed tigers have gone extinct, while kitties have conquered the world, so there’s that… :smirk:

Well, I have the distinct feeling I’ll get to make Winter extinct in City of Lies, so there IS that.
