Heh sorry about that i’ll shift over there as soon as I’m able and keep up the great work. Sabres was the first COG game I played and remains my favorite and Foraker is shaping up to rival that slot so keep up the great work and I hope the the author of Choice of Broadsides will allow you to add this wonderful piece of literature to the great universe they created
@Cataphrak I was thinking about the slave ship vignette and I think the slaver is really pushing his luck saying something like “even the RN has its price!” He was just begging to not have his ship impounded. Seems a little nuts to then call out the cops for taking a bribe. I think that statement would be more effective if the MC overheard his officers whispering it.
“I can’t believe we let that filth off the hook”
“Guess even our illustrious Captain has his price…”
They’re running slaves in the middle of a British Albionian naval blockade. They’re already “a little nuts”.
I mean, is that particular captain being insolent and smug by rubbing it in your face? Yes.
But then again, considering how the Democratic-Republicans and their associated press organs/supporters treated the real War of 1812, that seems very much in character to me, especially in context of events like what can only be described as David Porter’s shitposting contest with HMS Phoebe in Valparaiso.
I feel like we should have a follow up choice then “well if you are gonna be an ass about it nm…”
And anyway Porter was a navy captain not a “merchant”
When do you encounter the slave ship? I do not think I encountered one, but I might just be forgetting things.
its one of the random events
Ah, that would explain things!
The problem is that from a gameplay perspective, you’ve made your decision, and giving you a chance to back out of it after the fact takes a bit of the impact away. I’m not sure I want to do that.
Very much enjoyed that; it’s an absolute treat to come back to the world of Broadsides.
I have to toss my hat in the ring though; I don’t like random events.
Obviously this is simple personal preference, and others may completely disagree, but I enjoy replaying Choice games to try and find my optimal ending. While I understand the argument about improving replayability, I would prefer to see that done by implementing mutually exclusive paths rather than by subjecting me to random chance. The implementation you used in Guns was ideal - there simply isn’t enough time to finish your book, and invest in new developments, and become fluent in Antari etc. etc. in a single playthrough. That encourages me to go through multiple times and try and land multiple “optimal” playthroughs with different results.
If it had been random chance which determined whether I encountered some of those side elements, I would enjoy it for the first few playthroughs, and then be deeply irritated by it when it pushed me down different side tracks.
Sorry to be a party pooper about the new element - I did really enjoy the game, and I’m excited to see the mass combat system!
Random events and side-plots won’t be mutually exclusive in Lords of Infinity. A lot of them will trigger in between fixed plot points regarding side plots like (for example) getting a canal extended to your estate, or being on the army reform commission. They’re more like micro-stories in their own right.
I don’t want your playthrough to be entirely determinant on dice rolls, however, I do think the necessity to roll with the occasional punch adds a level of uncertainty which means you might need to think a bit more on your feet.
In short, don’t think of random events as replacing side-plots as much as they are adding a smaller, more granular element beneath the side-plot layer.
@Cataphrak
So an estate managing lord might get an event with poachers, say?
That level of micro-story, I mean.
I think poachers might actually be a subplot in my current outline (as part of the enclosure subplot)
Things like allotment disputes and injured tenants would probably be more that scale.
So would it be managing your responsibilities as a parent be the run of the bands and going to dispute between servants etc,
Cheeky. I got that Antelope reference. It’s actually one of my favorite sea shanties. Loving it so far.
@Cataphrak Wouldn´t it be best to discuss these topic in the guns forum??
don’t know if this has been addressed already but public is spelled publick every single time. This happened in guns to, Is it a bug or something
@dan_dan It seems on purpose, it happens many times
oh ok it is like cataphraks trademark or something
No it’s proper English back in the time period they are set in.
Considering that there is no such thing as “proper English” in the Infinity universe (correct me if I am wrong about this), and also that most other words are spelled in the modern English fashion, (and also that Choice of Broadsides probably did not use those spelling quirks, although I honestly can not remember that)… It kinda is Cataphrak’s “trademark” (using that word liberally).
Apologies about being contrarian about a tiny thing like this, I just did not like your reply.
*Oh yeah, those spelling quirks are also used in Kendrickstone, if I remember correctly.
