Thank you, i really want to talk about this game lol
First off, I want to say that I really enjoyed playing this game. I haven’t enjoyed a choice of game like this since Cryptkeepers of Hallowford, and this has the same level of growing mystery and worldbuilding.
However, I’m really surprised that Verity didn’t end up as Damien Fairgrave reborn if you go down the masquerade path. I was certain that would be the cost of going full masquerade, that the cost for getting true elementalism is that Verity would be that which she always feared she would be. It’s the logical conclusion of going down that path, and I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop only for it to just not happen. Is that something that was considered but not implemented for whatever reason, or did the idea just never come up?
So, when the prophecy comes true, it doesn’t actually refer to Verity anymore. When the prophecy was written in the Book and Cadafel started making it real, he took on the role of the demon-lord the prophecy describes. Everything that happens with the prophecy from that point affects him, not Verity. That’s why she doesn’t get any powers from it.
I think my earliest notes on the game do reference the idea of Verity potentially getting demonic powers, but it wasn’t something I was planning anymore by the time I was actually writing it. Partially because of the mechanics of how the prophecy works, and partially because of nebulous character reasons it would take me a while to articulate - essentially, that the character arc I was most interested in developing for her went in different directions. It’s definitely an interesting idea, though!
That’s awesome! I really like the hair!
Can I uh “get rid of” Min?
As mentioned above, not really. The only place Min can die is in certain versions of the final portal confrontation, and things are going badly enough there that the questions of motive and responsibility are fairly muddled.
In general, outside of combat situations, you can’t really murder people in this game.
I get that ending. Evander was pretty happy keeping studying. I supported Despina in the beginning, expressly in the firsts options.
I didn’t die at any play through. And I like Min so much… I felt guilty making my MC play Evander’s route… I didn’t make no other… Maybe when I forget Min’s cuteness.
I loved this game! Usually I’m not all that interested in the fantasy CoG works, but this one is really good! It was really immersive, and even when replaying I got really invested in all the choices and the possibilities. Also, Alvis is absolutely the best RO, and you can fight me on that.
But! Everyone was written really believably and really well! I love the characters in this game. The plot was also absolutely wonderful! I’m terrified of doing anything but the lying route, since I got really attached to the lie, so I’m making my siblings play their own routes too, so we can see the differences.
Also! The differences! It really feels like your choices matter in this game, and like every changed factor could result in a unique playthrough. It was written incredibly, from beginning to end. I loved it!
So quick question! I’ve been playing the game and whoo boy has it been a blast, and while not stat heavy i was wondering if certain love interests/paths had specific stats that made them easier despite not being obvious.
For instance i’ve found charm and lore to be much more helpful wooing the prince than magic despite how magic seems the obvious answer for a student of magic
I was successful wooing the prince with a heavy magic-using dullard (low charisma/charm) that never used lore. It all depends on how your goals and stated interests align with your RO … at least in my experience.
I’ve been following CoG for years and have loved a lot of their releases, but this one is really special to me. I’ve been reading it all week, and despite the replayability, I keep gravitating towards my original MC and choices because it was such a perfect experience. From what I’ve seen of different branches, ROs, etc., it seems like every playthrough has the potential to be just as rewarding as I found my first one.
I love Alvis. He’s my favorite RO in a while and possibly ever, and I found him engaging as a character in general as well as love interest. Something I really appreciate about his and other romances in this game is how they add to the character. You see different sides of them and grow together in ways that make perfect sense; it felt very rewarding, like putting the time/effort into a person/relationship and seeing the results. I think all the character work is beautifully done, and I genuinely enjoyed them all–Alvis just gets a particular nod from me. His personality and arc both affected me a lot.
And the MC! It was so easy for me to get invested in my character for this game. The premise (which is delightful in its own right) gives some great RP hooks, and the rest of the game follows through with so many different, equally satisfying places for the MC to end up. I was thrilled with my character’s ending at the Academy with Alvis, enjoying her new powers from the prophecy, working with Mardas to study her demonic heritage, and fumbling around building a familial bond with Caron.
Anyway, I thought this game deserved a forum post from me after how hung up on it I’ve been this week. Really fantastic work here, I get the feeling I’ll keep coming back to this one.
Not particularly. The romance system in this game is actually fairly simplistic. All you need to do is get the character’s relations high enough and take the romantic options when they come up, and very few of those raise relations options are skill gated. Just pick a romance partner and kiss their ass stand by them often enough and there you go.
I really liked how even tho Verity and my MC had their differences regarding telling the truth or not or how to deal with demons they could still work out their differences and become a couple. Often in these games I feel like MC has to agree with the RO 100%ly in everything or I’d lose too much relationship points (barring romance route), which needless to say is less than ideal since I want to play my own character not RO 2.0. So at least judging based on Veritys romance route I think the romances are very well written in this game.
Edit: Anyway this is one of those games where I wish there would be a sequel (in progress?) for it or maybe a game with a different MC set in the same world.
Thouroughly enjoying this game but i’m a bit stuck on some decisions.
When caron attacks in the palace, what are the stat requirements when trying to calm people down? I keep failing despite having a charm of 76 so is there another requirement i’m missing?.
furthermore, what is the stat requirement to make an impressive magic show at the tournament at the academy? I have a magic stat of 76 but again i don’t succeed.
Already looking forward to more stories by this writer
Not in a good position to check the code right now and I don’t know off the top of my head, but I’m fairly certain those are both combined stat tests - they’re testing the combined sum of two different stats. Look carefully at how the option text is phrased and see if it sounds like it might be indicating that another stat is involved as well - in most cases, that will be a skill stat and a personality stat. A lot of tests throughout the game work like that, especially in later chapters, so it’s something to watch out for!
Actually, even after checking the code, can you be more specific about which options you’re talking about, @lucdop? Both of those scenes have a lot of possible paths through them. Exact wording of the options would be great if you have it, otherwise descriptions of what’s happening around you and what specifically you’re trying to accomplish.
Certainly, and thank you for the quick response. Just after Caron is released from the crown you get multiple choices on how you want to aid the situation. I chose “I encourage people to keep their spirits up until the guards can clear the rubble by the main door”. It then appears that my efforts were ineffective.
The next choice is at the tournement at the academy. After convincing the councillor i should perform earlier i get to choose what it is i want to do. I choose the option to give an impressive magic show to end any doubts the people might have about my reputation. It then tells me that i conjure a tree but don’t know where to go from there, despite having a magic stat of 76% and showy of 79%. This one i find especially odd because wouldn’t a person who likes to show off excell here?
Aww I didn’t make enough people believe my story 🤦 must try again.
I don’t think you need showy stat in that second situation. Since my MCs strongest talent was magic I went with the same option there and it worked well for me even tho my MC was rather subtle than showy. Also she had high deception stat (that’s the only trait I can think of which might have mattered there).
I’m not sure about the first one since I went with a different option there, but if I’d have to guess based on the wording it sound like you might need charm + idealism maybe?
This is absolutely my favourite title this year. I really liked the setting and the characters. I feel the romances were somewhat weak but I get that it wasn’t the main point. Min was, surprisingly, the one I liked most. The main villain was built up to be a great menace but I beat him rather easily on my first attempt but it was fun regardless. What I did not like was the way it ends, it feels too abrupt and I don’t feel there’s a closure.
Overall it’s an 8 out of 10.
