Halloween Jam 2023- *Theme Revealed*

Oh man, now I can’t stop thinking this one horror novel I read a while ago (it had a cult that… worshipped mirrors, I think? Or hated them?)

What a cool theme  Since the minimum word count is only 2k I might try to put something together for this between working on my main project. And regardless will look forward to reading others. Thanks for posting the jam!

Well, that picture makes me think of Lasombra clan vampires. Their clan flaw is not being able to see their reflection.

I’m liking my own start so far. Got a hundred thirty-four lines of text (script included) written up today so far. Feels like a good start. Hard for me to do as much during my work time, but I like having the motivation during the free time I’ve got.

You have no more limit that 2k and choices with a game ending. So don’t feel pressured to do something big. Just go with the flow and enjoy the ride. If you really like the game you have all time in the world to polish it later

chuckles I’m already at 3,003 words at the end of today’s writing. But I have a reasonable pacing/length goal for the story. Just one full day of in-game time. Seems a reasonable amount of story to have bit off to be able to tackle by the end of October. And I’m genuinely excited about it.

That is awesome.

I’m doing something that I don’t usually do with my entry. I plan to finish the first draft of the game before I host a private beta.

I intend to see where the story takes me on its own before bringing in the glorious chaos of the readers.

I’ll be chewing on possible stories this month and plan to write my contribution next month.

Oh, I wish I could participate. I have a story I’ve been writing recently that fits the theme perfectly and the outline all done but no way to actually code and test it (mobile only unfortunately). That is such a fun theme for halloween, can’t believe I’m gonna miss it.

I know how to code and actually wrote bits of it, though most placeholders so I can come back to it after finishing the story. Guess I didn’t express myself correctly, my problem is just having no way to test it myself and make sure it’s working like I expect it to.

I will do it for you no problem.

This goes for Everyone with a solid project I can be of help with coding testing and publication. So don’t be afraid asking it is my job as hostess and I am proud of being able to help

I still plan to try and write a bit more today, but as of now I’ve managed to write 6k words, more or less 1k per day. I still only managed to write one route of the four planned for the prologue, but oh well. I haven’t accomplished much all things considered but I’m still very happy with what I’ve done. I have not been this motivated in a while. Hopefully, I’ll be able to write a bit more next week.

I’m quite excited about how my project is going, so I hope it’s okay for me to share some things about it: the introduction blurb and a drawing WIP for one of the companions.

Introduction Blurb

There’s a world beyond common perception, a world that can only be accessed through a mirror’s reflection.

Unlike our own, there, anything is possible–reality bends to one’s will and desires at the snap of a finger. The stronger one’s force of mind, the stronger the effect. Alas, what happens in the mirror, stays in the mirror. Unless that is, if you’re strong or mad enough to manifest your will beyond the enchanted world, past the thick reflective veil, and into your birth world where no such magic exists.

Many would think to use and abuse this power. Many have throughout the years. Maybe you’ve even done it yourself. But lately, some have gone too far. Their hidden agenda threatens the balance between the worlds, and with it, reality itself.

Alongside four companions, and at the behest of the Lady in White, you’re tasked with stopping whoever–or whatever–is trying to, ignorantly or maliciously, destroy the veil between the two realities. So far, you only have a single clue: the cult of the Beast in Black is involved, their intentions however unknown.

Dahlia/Evelyn, one of the companions

I hope everyone has a nice rest of the weekend, and that they reach their writing goals :))

Wow, you have done a lot and that is an amazing rhythm. Good art, but I recommend in the game making optional because many people prefer to imagine the characters

Thank you, you are too kind. The art isn’t for the game, it’s just a little thing I did to amuse myself really :)) I also prefer to imagine the characters myself so I completely get not wanting images during these sort of games.

Still It is good art and I think as option for people who like it can be a good point. Just a suggestion

How is everyone doing? I have an intense infection due my immune deficiency problems And I am in a med haze between antibiotics, corticoids etc… Really glad of having amazing public healthcare due the specialist consultss, diagnostic test and all that stuff and meds could cost me a fortune in the USA.

Now what I want to talk is the importance of Failing the choice and how shapes differentiate good writers from bad ones.

Baldur’s gate 3 my playthrough is not what I was planned due 3 epic failures dice rolls in a row.

Normally that would sound awful, hasn’t opened a very different, butt very interesting dynamic that otherwise I wouldn’t see at all. The rest of my game is being really different without that failing in main mission.

A bad writing game would have made me restart or shoehorned me back to a common ground better branch.

Here don’t you have a story that reflects your results in a realistic way. Save scumming would have made my experience worse.

It is very difficult to achieve rewarding failures with amazing storylines. @Cataphrak @JimD @Lucid and @Havenstone are in my opinion masters of this craft.

So I am inspired to write and focus to don’t make feel player they have success in all checks to play.

Get well soon poison mara
After a week of rehashing and rethinking, I have finally settled on a plot. I have just begun writing now. Hope to couple thousand words by the end of this week. :crossed_fingers::crossed_fingers:

Thanks, and an advice from someone used to present tons of contests. This is a marathon, not 100 meters. Dont overwork first days and burnt yourself and your creativity juice. Have a look at a calendar and what writing rythm ia better for you.

Even 500 words a day is about 15k a month. You could do with that more than hosted minimum when the dead line.
