Free map making tools for games

I noticed some discussion on getting maps on the Writers’ Support Thread. I’m here to share some tools which might be useful.

Azgaar has a fantasy map generator here:

Procgen Arcana has a series of map making tools which are available here. Outputs can be used for commercial purposes (but please double check the license on the FAQ page).

Watabou (from Procgen Arcana) also has a few other generators (maps or otherwise) on itch. Feel free to take a look and also be sure to double check the licenses before using anything.

Some maps:

Most of these tools rely on procedural content generation rather than Generative AI. Procedural Content generation is a much older technology which uses randomization and algorithms to generate content. Similar to how games like Civ can make new maps at the click of a button.

If anyone wants to share any other creative tools here, feel free to do so. Please share licensing terms if possible.

I lost many of my old bookmarks when I had to format both disks, which is fine, because much of it was outdated garbage that I was too lazy to sort through and clean.

But I did remember correctly that Donjon has a Fractal World Generator which is quite fun.
