First WIP, gauging interest, Space Western

So I’m working on a space adventure game, like a darker sorta “low fantasy” style space western. I’m underway at this point but I thought I’d check in and see if there is much demand for this before I commit to this one idea. There are three main storylines(sorta) where you can be a smuggler, a bounty hunter, or a pirate. If there is interest, I can post the bit I have and see what you all think.

Sounds nice, have you read The Expanse? I’m going through the first book and it kinda sounds like what you have in mind.

Good luck, mtderby.

The best way to gauge interest is to get a decent demo running - even if the premise doesn’t appeal to someone, your story might still be attractive due to the romances, the action or whatever. There are many stories that the synopsis did not appeal to me but because the author wrote well and developed elements in their project that I felt were well done I ended up enjoying despite my initial thoughts.

A Space Opera/western is something that is not written as much as they used to be so I think the material would be attractive due to just that fact alone.

I’ll look forward to your pushing the demo live.

Sounds shiny to me. :3

Yep what @Eiwynn said. These types of threads draw little interest from others because it’s just so speculative. It’s hard to get excited about just a premise. Plus, many people post these sorts of things and never follow up with an actual story.

If you have a demo, by all means post the demo and let people read your content.

Sounds interesting I’ll like to try it

Thank you guys for the responses, gave me exactly what I needed for motive(especially someone saying “shiny”)( And I NEED to read the expanse, i flipping love the show)(also eric, love cch) and i know that these kind of posts are a dime a dozen and usually don’t go much past concept so thank you all for taking the time to bother with it. While I do have a start(mostly character creation really), I want to get a bit more(as I keep coming up with gameplay ideas) to try to show it off. So I’m backtracking a bit, but at the rate I’ve been messing with this, I’ll have a presentable demo by the end of next week(I’m factoring in the time I’ll lose playing Lost Heir 3 haha). Thanks again guys and I’m anxiously stoked to present this, so keep an eye out!

Sounds interesting, and kind makes me think of the show Firefly. (Really good show imo) That’s how I would personally refer to Firefly anyway.

Firefly is certainly an influence, as it Star Wars, and Butch Cassidy, Eastwood movies, even the Oregon Trail games, that’s going to be overwhelmingly obvious, everything about this game’s setting is terribly derivative, I won’t be getting points for genius originality. Still, I’m stoked, believe it will be enjoyable all the same.

On that note, I’ve also changed the ‘pirate’ part to outlaw.

What is the best way to upload a (very rough)demo? I’ve got first scene for smuggler and bounty hunter(lot of character creation stuff), two random encounters(and thanks to the *rand command they can play out a few different ways), and some of the general mechanics started, haven’t done much with skills or ship stuff yet. Debating what to finish before showing what I got, it’s all rough(and alot of it is place holders) but I’m excited I’ve gotten this far.

Serenity now. Make that thing 20 words or more. I would really enjoy something like serenity or Star Wars minus the force .

Hey @Rude, welcome to the forum
Just so you know, I flagged your post for bumping an old WiP thread – it’s in the forum rules that you aren’t supposed to reply to a game thread that’s been inactive for more than three months. Mostly just because it’s unclear whether the author’s still continuing this idea and you don’t want to bug them by drawing attention to a discontinued project. It’s a common newcomer mistake and you certainly aren’t the first.

As for the Serenity-like sci-fi you’re looking for, there are a lot of more recent threads that are still updating! (As well as what looks like a second thread for this game here)

A Thousand Miles of Sky is probably closest to what you’re looking for:

Nuclear-Powered Toaster has the option to play as the smuggler Alexei with a cranky AI ship (author doesn’t have such a convenient summary for me to quote)

I haven’t kept up with The Operative lately, but it could fit what you’re looking for. You’d be playing a character a little like, well, the operative in Serenity, a spy/soldier working for an interstellar government.

And, um, my own WiP might suit you.:smirk: The Seventeenth Spy actually started as a concept for an (Old Republic) Star Wars story I decided to create my own universe for. I tend to think of it as ‘Star Wars minus the force,’ though it’s been gaining more of a Firefly flavor as I work on it. Again, you’d be playing as a spy in this setting.

(If you’re going to turn this into a longer conversation about sci-fi, we should probably start a new thread – I almost just went for it… :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:)
