posting this to keep myself accountable: I am going to write the complete, 100k word first draft of a horror IF, Meteoric, by the end of February, and post the beta onto the forums by the 1st of March.

That sounds like a very steep goal. How much have you written already?

I nearly finished chapter 5, but then decided to add more detailed intimate scenes so that’ll be a bit more work when I get back to it. I received revision notes for chapters 3 and 4 and have been plugging away at those. I find myself going through the easy ones first, then tackling the big changes. Tonight I did some reconfiguring that had me jumping around a 40k-word file, forehead scrunched up trying to keep track of it all, but I think I’ve gotten through the worst of it.

I was on a roll today, and had some solid writing time, so that was nice. Sometimes it’s hard to stop. I just want to keep making progress but breaks are important. Whenever I get stuck, I get up and walk around. Even a few minutes away lets me return with fresh eyes. I seem to be staring at the screen now, so I’ll call it a night.

Tomorrow is another day. :herb:

So far, 500 words. This is like a self-imposed Nanowrimo

Whelp, I had to take a leave of absence this semester, which sucks because it puts my graduation due date back by a few months. On the bright side, I’m now making it my goal to have writing and working on patreon stuff be my dayjob for the next few months. Pushing myself to do this is already going pretty good, and I’ve gotten a fair bit done even so far just today as I’m about 2k words in. If I keep this pace, I think i’ll probably get about 5k words in today. With any luck, i’ll get about 50k words done per month while still keeping up with patreon stuff.

I’ve gotten permission from other authors I know to essentially do audiobook type read throughs of their work on there, just to try out something new and put my VO chops to good use. So, here’s to a, hopefully, successful few months ahead.

I hope whatever caused you to have to take a leave of absence gets resolved smoothly.

Best of luck on the multiple endeavours.

Quick question, is there an English word that means something akin to ā€œwatches from aboveā€?

(I’m naming characters.)

As in, PHYSICALLY from above?

You could go with ā€œoverlookerā€, which is metaphorically from above, but also a play on ā€œoverlookā€, which can mean ā€œa place above from which you can see things or have a commanding view fromā€.

Hmm, that doesn’t sound bad.

Note that ā€œto overlookā€, the verb, can mean both ā€œto superviseā€ and ā€œto not notice somethingā€. In the same way, ā€œoverlookā€, the noun, can have the previously-stated meaning and ā€œthe fact that someone didn’t notice something.ā€

…sold.

I would say ā€œoverlookā€ can be a noun (like ā€œyou stand on the overlook [place where you’re looking down]ā€) and a verb as ā€œoverlookingā€ (ā€œyou’re overlooking the seaā€) but I don’t think I’ve heard ā€œoverlookerā€ very often at all. According to the not-entirely-accurate-but-potentially-useful ā€œusage over timeā€ graph, it reduces in use a great deal after 1850. Surveyor or observer might feel more modern; or if you want it to feel unusual/archaic that makes sense too.

An ā€œonlookerā€ is one that watches from the outside, without intervening.

Well. This is certainly one way to have a birthday present. My third scene that I was planning on finishing got corrupted somehow despite making sure that I saved before closing and I have lost it all. The entire thing is red dots and the text file is blank. It was a decent 4800 words too, a little under halfway done. And now I have to rewrite it all over again.

It sucks but hopefully it doesn’t sap my energy and I can get it done again in a decent amount of time…

Aw. I’m sorry. I hope the rewrite goes well and that you have a lovely birthday otherwise. :sparkling_heart:

losing all that work can feel incredibly frustrating and demoralizing. but maybe this setback is an opportunity for a fresh perspective on what you’ve already created. who knows, maybe this time around, new ideas will come to light that didn’t before.

either way, i’m rooting for you! good luck, and happy birthday! :croissant:

I accidentally deleted a whole scene a few weeks ago. It’s really demoralizing. I had to just work on other parts of the story until the sting went away. Now it is rewritten so that issue is behind me.

My issue now is writer’s block. All week, writer’s block. I tried working on something else entirely but I just can’t. At some point, I’ll get that drive back and get motivated. Maybe tomorrow!

I’ve got a tentative date for my open heart surgery which is the 26th February (with me entering hospital on the 25th).

So my current goal is now to use the time between now and then to get Chapter Two of Daemonglass finished and uploaded online.

The first week of February has been very productive for me – I have (finally) completed my deathsight pass and I did some touch-up on them as well.

I started to be too critical of minor things, so I pulled away from that rabbit hole.

Next up:

  • Rewrite one major choice-set to include an ā€œearlyā€ ending, if that is what the reader really, really wants at that point and
  • Rewrite a small scene that was originally going to be bigger, but has since I wrote it, shrunk in both importance and impact. ( i might end up deleting it; just depends on where the rewrite takes it as I write it).

Since I ran the alpha testing and began working on revisions and changes resulting from its feedback, I have added 50,000+ additional words to the draft; not counting replacements or substitutes. When I completed the 1st draft copy (alpha) … I was clueless that my wonderful readers would provide me with such excellent and constructive feedback!

I hope that once the beta copy is ready for everyone to read, tat they all see where their input has influenced the story and made for a better game.

I’ll be giving some thoughts on a few things raised in the thread this first week, but first I am going to take a break, go visit the local spot where bald eagles nest year round and maybe spot some of them doing their thing.

Thank you all, for making this a better place :revolving_hearts:
