Fallen Hero: Rebirth is released - discussion thread! (Book One)

They will be aware of this only if you don’t end the ReGene’s life…

Your MC is nicer than mine.

Ortega: Hey, it’s been a while, are you alright?
Natalie: new phone, who dis

Yeah, my MC is getting a little jealous of her puppet. Perhaps it’s time some unfortunate event…befell her…perhaps during one of the Entropy’s latest attacks???

shit, forget the game, I just want an irl Willy Wonka lair

They will anyway know if you act too suspicious… no killing needed… it’s actually enough to overload the one standing outside…then they also know it was a telepath…

I suppose this information could be enough for them to link the entire story to Sidestep. Provided, of course, that the theory of the Protagonist being an escapee from the Special Directive turns out to be correct. After all, the Main Character may be connected to them in a different way, but most readers portray Sidestep as one of the clones. I haven’t spent that much time with the game, therefore currently I don’t have a firm opinion…

I’m pretty sure that if you fight the Regene at all, it tips off the Special Directive.

Or this

I always tip off the SD because I like to make life difficult for my MC.

really?

Personally I never though that the MC could be one of the clones . Sure they make clones , but don’t think MC is one of them . Think MC is probably a tool just like them sure…but not a clone as such . They probably have many project , the clones who seem empty shell…maybe they can be controlled from a distance by others pawn like the MC .

Imagine the military , they probably would love having both .

Maybe MC was one of earlier attempts at making a regene that they not so succesfully disgarded

Okay so I have a question, and it may have been discussed before, but do we know for sure that the government can actually create artificial people? Cause, in a place that’s basically the wild west, I imagine there being quite a few orphans about and I don’t see why the government wouldn’t just… take a couple here and there to experiment on. Those that survive have been in their care for as long as they remember and are now unquestioning killing machines. I mean, it even says in the text that the quest for super powers is built on human suffering. Okay… maybe I’m reaching too much, but the accepted theory right now is that MC is a regene, but they just seem like an ordinary (albeit messed up) human to me.

“Seem” is the importent word…still bleeding blood, may got no free will anymore, but who knows how they made things this way…

Could tell us something about the nature of the ReGenes without being wrong for neither case…

We don’t know enough, and considering MC’s memory/past issues I doubt the MC knows all of it either, but we certainly can’t trust the special directive and some of the stuff they are doing is pretty shady. At least that much we can guess.

More evaluating risks in this case - not taking any calls means Ortega gets frantic and comes looking, potentially screwing up her plans. Taking occasional calls and making up lame excuses for having to hang up is just the usual “MC being a jerk again” that might annoy him but hopefully not enough for him to get off his ass and go look for her.

Yes, it’s in the timeline in the stat screen. In 1986, a company called Genitech patents a technique for growing organs from stem cells, and later in 1992 filed a patent for full body cloning. It also says that in 1993 a reporter published an article claiming the Regene project started in the 70s with the goal of creating androids for war.

I’m personally of the opinion that the android angle didn’t work out, so when people started developing powers, Genitech started investing in researching them, which led to breakthroughs in cloning.

You’re drawing a distinction between humans and Regenes and I don’t think there is one (or much of one). I think Regenes are humans who were created artificially and engineered to have powers, or else clones of people who developed powers due to the hero drug.

I’ll paste from the game some of the MC’s thoughts that made me suspicious:

While looking at the gala exhibits:

It’s funny that the biggest lie is nowhere to be seen. Even though you make a point of looking in the guidebook, no mention is made of the Special Directive. There are sections for Boosts and the history of the Hero drug, and there are nice diagrams of the various mods that people have been subjected to. Everything is there…except for the things that might upset someone.

If these walls could tell the truth, what would they say?

What would they have called the force-grown bodies? The artificial minds? Tools? Abominations?

You smile a little bitterly to yourself as you trace a pattern with your fingertip on one of the shiny surfaces. Your pattern? It doesn’t matter. Not anymore. Not after tonight.

Tonight, you leave everything behind. Lies. Truths. Your past.

@Sammysam and @bobsmyuncle, hm… I didn’t think of it that way! Thanks for helping to clarify and for the text from the gala exhibit, i never went that route so i never saw it

But if they are dead, then there aren’t any witnesses, correct? Besides, the other ReGenes you will cross paths with there have to be either dealt with or avoided, however using telepathy is not required to do so, as you can instead, for example, knock one out with a dart. The ReGene you are able to fight has the longest encounter with you, so perhaps they’d have more reason to be suspicious of who you are. To the others, on the other hand, you are likely no more than another mercenary in the midst of the battle.

You’re right, I checked the code and while killing the Regene does make the Special Directive suspicious (it increments the clue counter, anyway), it’s not enough for them to know it was you. I assumed there would be blood on the scene they could test.

You have to botch it with the sentry or leave the Regene alive to give the SD enough of a clue to get the scene at the end.

I assume it was the government because when the MC mentioned the Farm. In real life, the Farm is the one of the facility where the CIA operatives where trained and I wouldn’t get past governments to look for ways to make a super power armies. But this is all conjecture though…

ok talking about the Gen…got me re-playing this game (seriously it’s 66h in and sooo goood)".

anyway , found these…

Summary

Them…

In a world filled with Enhanced people, some things are still more taboo than others. Be they Boosts or Mods, all the Enhanced are human at the core, no matter how wildly they have deviated from their origins. Not so the Re-Genes.

Like robotic constructs, Re-Genes are created, not born. They are subject to none of the rights of a proper human being. Like stem cell clones, they are supposedly mindless, just a body to strip for parts with no soul to fill it.

Human ingenuity might have enabled the GeniTech Corporation to reconstruct humanoid beings from the ground up. But giving them a mind, much less a soul? That is impossible.

Circumventing this limitation, the Re-Genes that the Special Directive employ as weapons are outfitted with artificial minds: advanced AIs that can mimic the acts of people, but aren’t truly alive.

Or so the story goes.

The Re-Genes are put in distinctive uniforms, their faces and bodies covered with bright tattoos, marking them for the tools they are. These warning signs are there to make people keep their distance, as the powers involved are often much more dangerous than what normal Boosts could wield and survive. They also make it impossible to confuse Re-Genes with a normal human, especially when combined with their distinctive blue-gray skin.

Always a controversial presence, most of the Re-Genes are used in the wars abroad. But several teams always remain on US soil, ready to be put to use should the Special Directive require it.

Like now.

Because you called them in….

“I’ve heard that some of these people are artificial, though….” You keep your voice quiet, trying to gage exactly how Ortega feels about the Re-Genes.

“Are you talking about the Special Directive?” Surprise colors her voice as she turns to face you, looking away from the creature in front of you. “Most people have never even heard of them.”

“I’m not most people,” you say with a disarming smile. “And I mean, there are a lot of rumors about them. That they have artificial bodies and minds….”

“You are certainly not most people.” Ortega returns the smile, but it doesn’t reach her eyes. “And I’ve heard the rumors too. Even seen them in action now and then. They’re…”

“What?” You reach out to gently touch her arm.

“Honestly? They creep me out.” She shakes her head before continuing. “But I’m not sure I buy this whole android deal. They look scary, but I’ve seen them bleed. And I know how the military likes keeping their secrets from leaking out.”

“I didn’t know they were military,” you lie.

“That is a secret, so don’t go repeating it.” Ortega pauses for a moment

I mean I always say that romance won’t solve MC’s problem neither with the world nor with themself, but honestly: Who else squees at the thought of the RO tracing those at night (and every single scar MC may has), please clap and don’t leave me alone feeling sappy

(Also because for MC showing themself in front of their RO literally naked means that they 1. gained enough confidence to do so, 2. trust at least one person enough to tell/show them, 3. feel save and comfortable enough around another person to let them close enough/touch them, which all shows fabulous progress on MC’s side…I want them to heal and learn to trust people, okay?)

(okay I am terrible sappy… >\\\<)

I do want my MC to regain bit faith in manunkind, but i doubt it will happen…
Also romance is just gonna increase number of their problems and still gonna pursue it

Awww you are so sappy  but that’s a good thing

while romance won’t solve (and shouldn’t anyway) MC problem’s . It will at least keep the MC sane and maybe help with the amount of nightmares MC is plagued with .

Now you got me thinking of Julia…

when you are in hell…a romance is the only light you can see…

those kind of problem are fun!

It also has to depend who is your romance partner…

I still can’t quite imagine how the romance with Lady Argent looks like, the scene that me chuckle is that the romance with Argent will be like Tom and Jerry … a never ending love story
