Lol that is how I roll.
Yes, welcome to the ranks of the mods, @CJW
Great to hear @CJW is now a mod
Congrads
@CJW I am not trying to jump the gun. My skill set is such that I won’t be able to help much in the way of coding any of it. So I can at least provide a temp place to work. Some where we can throw up ideas and test concepts. Yes we have a longways togo before we would have anything close to work able.
@jasonstevanhill Thank you!
@lordirishdas
That’d be great, and don’t worry - I’m just as eager!
I think there’d need to be significant differences to make Choicebox worthwhile.
Dropbox works, it’s so easy to use and to share links. It’s free, it’s great.
What I’d love to see is a community resource centre for Choice of Games.
I’d love to see a forum there that uses different software since I’m really not fond of the forum software here. A forum that will allow for off-topic discussions and for the roleplay some people were doing, and where threads aren’t locked for being bumped, if the discussion is still relevant. (Not that any of this is a criticism against how things currently are here.)
I’d love to see blogs. I’d love to see game reviews and a system that allows for easily written reviews.
I’d love to see articles and tutorials. I’d love to see a wiki moved there.
I’d love for the web-test utility to be linked to as well. I’d love links to resources for writing games.
@FairyGdfeather I was thinking some of the same things.
When we do get to the stage of development I have member login software that should allow easier use on blogs, and message boards.
I tend to use phpBB, but not great at the programming. Would need someone onboard that is comfortable with it.
As far as blogs go I use Wordpress, so we could setup WPMU.
I would also like an area to run contests from.
*edit What if we add in BuddyPress for social network features? It is completely open source.
Since phpbb is free there’s nothing stopping us from using that as a basis and modding everything else into it, though I’d have to do some poking around, I’m more familiar wtih Vbulletin.
But I don’t think making another forum is a good idea, we’d be better upgrading this one.
@CJW I agree that we should not try to replace the current forum, but rather upgrade. I am thinking more for the role playing, crit boards, or anything of that nature.
*Edit I have Vbulletin as well, but know nothing about using it.
I would love to have an updated forum for here. I thought that if they wanted to update the forums they already would have though. It’s an improvement from what I remember the original forums to be, but even then I’ve found that the forum format was the major reason I only joined the community recently.
Would it be possible to create the same save system that Choice of Games uses for their games? They do something server side?
@FairyGodfeather I am sure we could but not sure if it would be worth while. It would have to be removed before being sent to CoG. Plus @CJW has a great save system to use temp. wise.
Here is a compiled list of the ideas so far.
Game ranking system. - What type of ranking and how should the ranking work. Plus being able to search for games by ranking.
Beta testing. - An area to setup up for beta testing. Controllable access for the writer on who can access this area. Plus a beta tester score card.
Leaderboard. - Not sure how we would want to setup scoring for this.
Achievement. - Personal and or public?
User area. - tools password tracking
Community resources - all the things llke save system thru game reviews.
Contest area
Great i’m excited
For the ranking system, making it a part of game reviews would probably make sense - just have a star rating along with the text review like Amazon.
I can’t really think of a way to make leaderboards that would be relevant to most ChoiceScript games, since most of them don’t have numeric scores - maybe just a sum of the number of achievements won or number of games played?
I’d be willing to help out if help were needed… I certainly don’t have “massive skills” of any sort but I have a little experience in front-end development and web design from school/work/dabbling, so might be at least a bit useful.
@aetheria I would welcome you joining our little band. Right now it is going to be a lot of ideas and lists. But I remember the text wrangler mod. So great to have you.
Has this project been scrapped? If not when will it be available. Or may I have the link to this?
I would love to have something like this to test my game on.
Short answer: Yes, it has been scrapped.
Longer answer: Not scrapped, but for my part at least, things ended up going in a different direction (an IDE/Development tool rather than a hosting/testing solution).
But as for whether or not that will eventually stem back to this, or whether or not someone else is yet plugging away at something similar I can’t rightly say. Sorry about that.
It’s good that you’ve expressed your interest though as that may help to motivate or inspire someone.
I sure hope so. Because I really don’t like the idea of paying a monthly subscription fee. Though I have a feeling that if the project went through we might have to pay a fee for that program as well.
I guess it all depends.
What kind of program is Dropbox? Perhaps I could have a few friends take a look and see if they are interested in creating something similar?
