Donor: A Vampire Victim's Tale [GAME RELEASED!]

He’s supposed to be very immature and emotionally stunted since becoming involved with the vamps in his late teens. Paul’s supposed to have known him for over a decade, so it wouldn’t work if Charles was in his early twenties, although I agree that age would probably be a better fit for the character’s personality

I always pictured him as a creepy 37ish guy with the stunted emotional and intellectual growth of someone stuck at 19.

LMAO that would work even better! I don’t think he’d be quite as useful baiting kills at 37  but it would be kinda amazing to see him try…

Give him some gold chains, Hawaiian type shirt, unbuttoned to show his chest hair, have him mention his corvette in every pick-up attempt he tries and wham … Donor’s Liesure-suit Larry.

I cannot stop laughing at this. I might create a spinoff just for an excuse to make the cover art :stuck_out_tongue:

Hey guys,

I’m back with another update, but this isn’t the one I was hoping to post. Lemme explain…

After a great deal of thought, I came to the conclusion that the alternate ending to chapter 6 would feel unbalanced if it resulted in skipping directly to chapter 8. So I went back and created a chapter 7b with a completely different flow, minigame etc. It still reuses in the same chapter 7 epilogue when you die (which I still plan to clean up depending on your relationship with the vamps), but that’s just about the only similarity (not counting the “better offer” achievement dialogue, and some of the description of the laundry room). This path is a bit shorter than the other (7k as opposed to 12k word count), but the play-through length should even out overall (taking chapter 6 into account).

Items of interest in this release:

  • Total content: ~72k
  • Added a description of Charles being in his “late twenties” to Chapter 3.
  • Added a description of Richard in Chapter 2.
  • It’s possible to get the “better offer” achievement in 7b, but you can’t get the “much better offer” hidden achievement until later on if you choose this path.
  • 7b actually has two separate configurations that will influence gameplay depending on how you ended chapter 6. So if you’re playing it through the quickstart link, choose the “Hell Hath No Fury” character configuration if Paul was upset with you (and planned to use you as fodder for turning Charles). The other configurations (including custom) assume you ended chapter 6 on better footing.

PS - @Meira_Litch I framed the other pic, just haven’t hung it yet (which I plan to do tomorrow). Will post a photo when they’re both up on the wall.

@Meira_Litch The photo was taken in a bad light, so Rich looks dark in this pic - he looks amazing in person, though. Thanks again!

Had to share this: @FoxalypticWorld’s friend put together some fanfic after reading the novel, and it’s absolutely phenomenal: https://archiveofourown.org/works/15318111 :yum:

Hey, absolutely loved this demo! I did notice a small mistake during the dinner theatre section. When choosing to pick Charle’s number, the MC says Stacy lives or dies on his own.

Thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed it

WOW THANK YOU. I never would’ve caught this (and Grammarly wouldn’t have either). I’ll update the demo later tonight!

I actually just caught the ‘his own’ thing from above, but noticed a bit too late. I did spot one other thing I’m pretty sure is a mistake, and one thing that might be (?).

During Chapter 3, there’s two different interludes (Good and Bad). In Good, you’ve been there since Tuesday, and it’s currently 11pm on Friday. In Bad, you’ve been there since Monday, and it’s currently 8pm on Thursday. Both lead to the meeting with Charles, and then the 72 hour timeskip. I’m pretty sure Bad is the correct one, since Thursday -> Sunday would fit with the 72 hour timeskip.

The second one is more minor. In Chapter 4, if you decline Paul’s offer after dinner theater, he makes a comment that Charlie’s pissed off over Dinner Theater, regardless of if you actually pulled Charlie in. Other choices (such as your entire talk with Paul if you choose to smoke) have a check on Charles_game, but this one scene doesn’t.

And I’m a bit late on the whole thing, but man - big fan. Mostly of the book, but I love all the little side bits that obviously couldn’t make it, like Richard’s ‘better deal’ he offers you if you try and sell out Charlie.

Holy shit, thank you! I can’t believe you took the time to look through the code  I’ll push out another fix tomorrow.

likewise

Heh, the game is exactly what you’ve guessed - a way for me to squeeze in all the material that couldn’t make it into the book. I’m so glad you enjoyed it!

I’m a coder by trade, and the COG code is super easy to read! And honestly, probably don’t have the patience to go through every single option to manually test.

Figured I’d read through all the options (currently working through 7 / 7b) before I try drafting out some more fic. It’s always kind of weird writing fic for stuff that is itself written, but the world and characters are just so neat!

I had a hunch

OMG you skipped the laundry room game?! Cheater.

What’s already written only takes place in one of Lenore’s infinite universes, I think there’s plenty of room for other stories. Your last one had me laughing out loud. I can’t wait to see what you write next.

Never fear! I played through the whole game a few times. I did have to (semi cheat) to get the laundry room game… I kept feeling bad for Charles and telling him after going hunting, and kept missing out on the book-canon laundry room scene!

That said, I went back and played it, and actually cleared the laundry room game the first time around. I’m actually way better at guessing what Richard wants then Paul. He wants you compliant, but he also seems to really like the idea of you being smart enough to keep up with him!

Hey, loved your demo! A thought came to me while chatting with Paul; he mentions Christ a few times, so I think it’d be cool to ask about whether he is religious and how his religious views affect his…condition. Adding on to that, do crosses/holy objects have any affect on vampires?

Ugh. I’m actually concerned about this because 7b isn’t the better arc. I’ll probably make it harder to get there after finishing up the first draft. I’m also toying with the idea of making it “unlockable” after the first playthrough.

Rich is a lot easier to read than Paul, who’s meant to keep you on your toes. Let me know if any of Paul’s reactions ever seen unreasonable, however.

Yeah, the first time through I had no idea there was an alternate to 7b. The way it was implemented felt kind of off to me-normally, talking as much as you can is the best/expected way to play, so I do feel like it should be harder to get to it. However, I feel like it’s worth leaving in as players should “work” for the better ending, so to speak, and it’s a pretty good segment story wise. If you wanted to keep it as is, having to sort of play counter intuitively to get the better ending to 7 seems cool. IMO it encourages exploration and adds replayabilty, although it is kind of weird/hard to access. Idk lol

He’s never struck me as unreasonable, just… unpredictable. Which he kind of is. He’s always the kind of person who can turn on a dime at times. Slave to his instincts and all that!

As for 7b… I think part of it might just be me (I was very curious to know why Charles did the things he did), but does the setup currently lock you out if you pull Charles into Dinner Theater? Tying 7b to both leaving him off the couch, as well as learning about Angela might make it slightly less likely to pop up. That said, I think the easiest version might just be adjusting Charles_questions_2 to be a single choice. All the choices (telling him the truth, asking him to reconsider, etc) seem like they should be individual choices, rather than a scenario where you try them all.

As a side note, you mentioned planning to redo Bait - just a rewrite, or actual changes to the plot? Curious, even if it won’t ever be a choice game for obvious reasons.
