The thing is though, the fantasy one won’t have magic. Burn me at the stake if you want, but the point of the first one is you’re a common soldier. If you want magic, vote for the second one.
To me the awesomest thing to do would be the fantasy kingdom and have branching paths like you found your own magic school thereby helping your kingdom by making more mages and also as an example discovering your own king is a fool and joining the other side you know. Anyway I support the fantasy kingdom idea
Sorry, the fantasy CoG will have no magic and you generally won’t be involved in larger scale politics. It will be more like a cross between Sabres of Infinity and Somme Trench.
Second one!!! I will not be a simple soldier!!! Mortals must bow to me!!!
And a vote for post-apocalyptic. Anyone gonna vote for the first one?
@Zane_Hiam
I don’t want to sound rude or anything, but the first option sounds kinda boring… People usually don’t want to play as an average joe.
I’d vote for the second option. It sounds like fallout with magic, could work, who knows?
Any of these could be good, regardless of magic. I mean, there are games about being a fire fighter, real estate agent, etc. Being a soldier’s at least as exciting as that. By the way, is there no magic in this world or is there just in-universe magic that’s accessible to the character? You could so something cool like with enchanting and adding runes to armor and weapons. Like a flaming gauntlet would take punching someone out to the next level!
I’d need more details before I could pick a favorite. All of the summaries are pretty brief and just based on my genre preferences. For instance, what kind of fantasy setting is this? Is it the usual Tolkien-esque elves and dwarves or something different (better, imo)? If it’s same old same old, than eh, I’d still prefer it. If you decide to go with the magic, I think it’d be cool to give players options alternative to using the elemental stuff. Especially since, to my knowledge, magic’s best with limitations. Give the players the option to full out indulge in their power despite possible consequences, learn to control it, or just plain abstain.
No magic or enchantments period. It’s like medieval Europe with no substantial difference between historical Europe. The most fantastical thing I have right now is a fight with a troll.
Who want to be a simple soldier in fantasy? Sorry but i better sleep!
Okay, I may have lied than. When you said “medieval Europe” you lost me. Sorry, I’m just over that time period/location combo. It’s way overrated and overused. The second one sounds good, I think. Should give details for that one.
What types of magic will be?
So generally I’m seeing not a lot of support for the first one. I’m limiting the magic in the second one to elemental stuff. Specifically, players will have a choice between fire, ice, and lightning. Read my previous post for more details.
A gritty-ish medieval Europe fantasy might be interesting, but there’s not enough to go on to pick between them really as far as who we can be and what we will be doing, although the second and third sound more about bigger decisions than personal combat…
On guns versus swords - we don’t see swords leave the battlefield until the late 19th century. No reason you can’t have both.
We actually use swords today, but they are now called “military knives”.
Bigger bladed weapons are usually too clumsy for modern combat.
@ballmot I’m not sure that "military knives’ bear any resemblance to how and where/when swords were used except that they’re both sharp.
@Elfwine
I know, it just doesn’t make sense to have swords or knives as primary weapons anyway… That is why I mentioned the secondary bladed weapons people use today.
Try to make an army of medieval soldiers fight an army of 19th century soldiers, it simply won’t work
@ballmot Swords and knives not making sense as primary weapons vs. modern guns, sure. Vs. late 19th century repeating rifles, sure. Swords vs. flintlocks or even mid-19th century muzzleloading rifles with minie balls, that’s not as absurd.
A medieval army vs. a 19th century army is obvious, but a Napoleonic era army would have (some) guys with swords as well guys with guns.
@Elfwine
Indeed, the cavalry did use swords.
But I believe this whole conversation is starting to get off-topic, we should stop before the moderators ask us to create another thread just to talk about this
Yeah, I was about to step in and ask you to bring it back. For now I’m going to limit this forum to votes, questions, and suggestions.
My chief question right now - what would our choices be about?
Looking at the first one, because it would be nice to see more good low fantasy stories in the world.
