Disliked Elements, Mechanics, and Tropes

If I weren’t ace, I’d probably be straight… but Kiryu’s dragon tattoo is making me have sinful feelings.

Many of my characters tend to be either world-weary and jaded, cautious to the point of paranoia, loners by nature, or otherwise deeply disconnected with the central conflicts they’re expected to take a leading role in. Whenever a Chosen One story pops up, the most common response to learning that the fate of the world rests on their shoulders is akin to a classroom full of teenagers hearing that they have homework over the holiday break - loud groaning, bitching, exhaustion and apathy.

This is because, whether the games in question give me the ability to declare such or not, every one of my characters is perfectly well aware that they just got shoved head-first into some grade A bullshit, and it’s going to be awful, and no amount of singing their praises or telling them how great the rewards they stand to reap from their heroisms will be is enough to make them overlook the fact that they have to deal with this crap that they didn’t sign up for.

As a result, my Chosen One story MCs tend to drag their feet at every possible opportunity, to the point where everybody is practically ripping their hair out trying to make them get a move on.

I posted the wrong one :smiling_face_with_tear:. It was meant to be this

Ah, I see what you mean now…I preferred the other one, at least that one was distinctive and could, hypothetically, be used as either a parody or a more serious movie/novel. :disappointed_relieved:

YES! Thank you!

There is nothing wrong with Evil being Evil.

…Well, other than them being evil, but that’s a given.

I was extremely disappointed that you couldn’t work with the Princess from the enemy country (I completely blanked on her name, which is a shame since she was one of the better characters in the entire story) in order to fuck with the royal family, topple the Monarchy and take the throne for yourself. Especially considering you can end up having a kind and understanding relationship with her by somewhat finding common ground in your shared misery; to the point I’d actually consider her the best RO purely for being the most complex, interesting and intimate romance. Despite the fact it leaves us in, without question, the worst position out of all ROs. More so if we’re King/Queen.

Speaking of which…

Don’t get me started on all the hypocrisy going around with Richard and Queen Isabelle. Literally the only two sensible characters in the Royal Family were Freya and Atheris. While Atheris was hotheaded and brash, she at least had a shred of fucking dignity to not try and shaft us for taking the throne from her and she shows actual sensible decision making if she’s a ruler. Richard literally wanted fuck all to do with the throne and his default emotion was “smug.” It gets even worse when we become King/Queen because I can’t even tell you why he gets mad over the fact we were chosen to rule… If that wasn’t bad enough he has the gall to act like a petulant, whiny brat over every decision we make as a ruler.

What I wouldn’t give for a few “Go fuck yourself” choices concerning Isabelle and Richard. At least your Father actually had understandable (albeit misguided and foolish) reasons for doing the awful shit he did.

Not to make this a Sword of Rivhania thread, but thats an interesting take on that game that I don’t know if I agree with. A lot of it changes depending on your choices since, I didn’t ever find Richard to be smug or anything (being a kid and proud that his parent and king believed in him I feel isn’t a thing that I could hate on him for). And while my MC wanted the throne, he always supported his siblings and had a loving relationship with them and they all supported him when he was chosen as king. Richard bowed with no hesitation and was openly happy and Atheris hesitated, but did bow willingly aswell. No trying to shaft my MC or being mad nor did he get mad at me over the decisions I made. So I guess it depends on what type of relationship you go for with them. Heck if I can remember somewhere near the end or after my MC became king, they all had a little sibling moment and Atheris even teared up, it was a nice moment

One of the main things I liked was how much all of the family were worried when something happened to my MC, because it showed that they might they might have their differences but all did care about him.

As far as Isabelle and just the whole family conflict goes, I look at it as everyone did messed up stuff to different degrees. At the same time, I kind of get why Isabelle doesn’t like the other kids after the really messed up thing the MC’s mother does to her, especially over a petty thing like jealousy. I wont get into the stuff the king did, understandable is not a word I would use at all lol.

Anyway to get back to the topic before im thrown out, I guess another trope or story I hate would be…ok maybe not hate cause I like them, but feel like is kind of oversaturated is medieval-fantasy bonus points if we play some kind of heir, which is ironic since I just got through talking about one of those stories in a good way lol. But yeah, I like them but just feel there are so many other cool settings and even other cultures besides european to make stories about. Its most of the time, the same weapon types and same monsters if any used everytime also. Im biased but I would like stuff like the wild west to be used more and other stuff like chinese and japanese folklore to be used in the setting of video games and CoG/HG/HC. I know my opinion may not be popular since i’m sure there wouldn’t be so many if people didn’t absolutely love the genre, but its something that I have felt for a long time now.

Yeah, Tin Star is my second favorite game overall here! Unfortunately, your right about popularity though and it seems its the same in the video gaming space aswell. Never heard of Twine, so maybe I will try there.

Thanks for the recommendation! I plan to play it…soon as I wake up cause im tired but thanks again! See supernatural wild west is a cool under-used setting! Im looking forward to this!

There are a couple of good wild west IFs, but they are on Twine. There’s also Tin Star. I get the impression wild west is not as popular too, but at least few ifs who focus on that setting are doing well.

I might commit a western sometime but for now I recommend trying Larkin! It’s a vampire hunter in wild west WIP.

I feel like the debate on the whole “teen protagonist” thing should account for the fact that in medieval societies they did actually train teenagers as soldiers. Heck, Carolus Rex of Sweden, one of its most famous kings, was RUNNING THE COUNTRY at fifteen. It TOTALLY makes sense to have teenaged adventurers in that setting.

Also Wilhelm von Schwerin, who died at the age 15 as an ensign (or whatever the equivalent of his rank in English is) and a war hero.

probably alone on this one but i’m tired of playing heroes. i want to play a normal person doing normal things :sob:

i get that might be boring for some but i actually find it really comforting. i need more slice of life! i don’t want to save the world anymore lol

B-but c-c-apes and Spandex!

I can never get enough of Heroes personally, Slice of life can be fun too. It just the pace is different. There is a thrill with Superheroes, where Slice of life it’s more tame.

Superhero slice of life! Someone write that please.

wasn’t that what Totem force was about?

Maybe? I wouldn’t know, I haven’t played it. It’s too Power Rangers for my taste.

I unironically love Dragon Ball Super for this. Goku and Vegeta will fight Goku’s evil clone and a deranged fallen god in the future and then play baseball a couple episodes later
