Deadbury Academy (WIP), new zombie-survival game from Mia and JimD - updated 10/13/24 - 76,000 words

I’m my high school a girl fainted in class once and the whole class went into hysterics but me, 2 others, and the teacher.

I was confused because I was in the middle of reading something

In my school the two times somebody fanted, resulted in two seconds of preocupation for them and then the whole class trying to put as many pencils in his nose as possible before he wakes up or the teacher finds out (only boys school)

I actually like your prediction. Now let’s just see how far or close you are to being right.

I do hope the haunting is real. The optional supernatural elements in both ZE games makes them stand out more for me.

You think it’s a wasted opportunity that they subverted the stereotype around them and were more relatable characters for it?

Also, we met them in a school that was overrun with zombies and full of dead students. Under the circumstances, it’s reasonable to expect they’d be fairly competent.

Eh, just because something is a stereotype doesn’t really mean that it’s automatically a bad thing, and, in my opinion, being a bitchy teen who cries during zombie apocalypse sounds more relatable than a strong and independent 16 year old who can survive in a school full of zombies.
Not saying one is better than the other one, just stating my personal preference.

Yet it does make them more unique. But you are correct that it’s not automatically bad, I on the other hand just prefer the characterization they already have.

Survive the school with the MC’s help. And I think it’s pretty obvious she needs her brother more than she lets on. But I digress.

This isn’t a ZESH thread anyway, and I feel like it’s too early for us to talk abut a non-existent character, but I see where you are coming from. I guess I just didn’t like how characters are portraited in ZESH in general so it’s whatever at this point.

Speaking of ZESH, hope there will be less named characters in this. In my opinion Safe haven has way too many and none get enough screen time.

They did get some help before it went down from their uncle who taught them survival skills forcing them outdoors. So they were some what prepared and dealing with zombies just takes time and experience especially since word out quickly how deal with them.

The beta version has been updated with an additional 20,000 words.

This update has the following:

  • Get to know the six main characters that are your fellow students: Adam, Darren, Jasmine, Kiyone, Lilith, and Rafael. Each one has a path to get to know them, but you will have to play 6 times and choose a different one as your roommate to see all of those paths.
  • Read through added content if you choose the father, pregnancy, or sibling challenges.
  • Customize your MC with a new accessory option.

This release is 20,000 more words, but there are numerous branches. It won’t feel like 20,000 more words unless you replay a few times.

As always, please let me know your thoughts and if you have any suggestions to improve the game.

Can’t ever say no to a new JimD Novel

There’s some bugs with the younger sibling scene (pronoun related and their name doesn’t display with the relationship change). I also feel like the sibling should be listed in the relationship chart (same with the other teen parent though I haven’t yet played with that challenge), since their relationship with PC is variable.

Also, I wonder what the significance of our age will be in the future, since we get to pick whether we are 15, 16, or 17 years old (why not 18? Does Steadbury advertise that their pupils complete 4 years of high school in 3 years? Or is PC a sophomore, junior, or senior [so that the sibling is always a grade younger, assuming they exist] and their birthday to 16/17/18 hasn’t come yet?). Are our classmates set to always be our age?

Also, could we have possible nicknames for PC (ex: Mike for Michael) that our classmates could call us (while the teachers use our given name)? And if we don’t like a specific accessory, could we go back to the accessory-specific selection menu rather than the general accessory selection menu (ex. If I want earrings but not dangly feather earrings I want to go back to the earring selection menu rather than back to the accessory menu that now no longer has the earring option).

If we have both the younger sibling and pregnancy (either being pregnant or knowing we impregnated) challenges we should see both scenes with them. The game ended at the younger sibling scene.

I get lots of problems on moody for some reason too

Kinda odd having a pregnant gal not mention that she also is sorta preggers to another gal who is clearly in the preggers family. Seems odd given that your both in that situation. Sure, your kinda keeping quiet about it, but still.

@Snowflower thank you for pointing out those issues. I have corrected most of them.

I have not added an MC nickname, but I can do so in the next update.

I have noticed on Moody that you have to play in it incognito mode or private on a browser. Otherwise, it brings up an older version of the game.

It will come up eventually. A lot of the early scenes are flashbacks, but as you interact with other characters, you will be able to reveal your pregnancy.

I had no issues (issues = game breaking bugs like in the screenshot) when I used Safari to play.

Also, are the fixes live right now?

Yes, I just play tested all of the fixes (except for adding the nickname like I mentioned). When I first tried through Moody, it did not reflect the changes. When I used incognito mode, it showed them. It may just be my computer.

Does Steadbury include 8th grade (there are some high schools that do this, including one in my hometown; I would not be surprised if Steadbury follows this process)? If it’s a 4 year high school then I don’t think the younger sibling would be a grade below PC if they are a year younger and PC is 15 (15 is the youngest, making PC a freshman or younger sophomore. Speaking of which, could we choose our grade level as well as our age? Although I don’t think Steadbury would hold students back because of bad optics, and PC’s parents and/or the headmaster likely forbade PC from skipping more than one grade). Or PC is a sophomore at 15 and their birthday hasn’t come yet (and the sibling is a year younger and a freshman). I guess I’m asking these questions because there’s no date (unless this is the same time frame as ZE/SH) given for the start of the game like it is in ZESH.
