CScomp discussion thread

that’s good  I can tell it will be enjoyable… and your other WIP is awesome!

so if someone else codes for you, how do you send them what you have so they know how to code it? just wondered how that works

Woooo, CSComp! Nice job, guys! Wanted to give a shout-out to @Fiogan, your world-building skills remain excellent. I’m enjoying being a noseless diplomat more than I ever thought I would!

Still need to get time to look at everyone’s games, but this is an impressive amount of entrants! Everyone should be very proud of themselves.

@RockStarPenguin we only use email

I am super wishing I had gone with this other idea I had for the comp…but it’s ok… I feel I tried to tackle something too massive in so little time with not being organized at all so it kinda fell apart and wasn’t done very well =p … I have known how to code for a while but as far getting further into a story with good structure, well… I am pretty knew to that since I only write the first chapter of a story then start a new one =P but I learned a TON just in that month so yay for me!

@honeymichie I do want to say I wish there were more in your game. It does feel very short, so far. But I’m 99% positive your coding is easier to read than mine. Mixed feelings. I’m looking forward to the judge feedback.

And I’ve finished reading through everything :tada: (be it a day later than I was expecting)

Since I promised to post reviews of everything, here they are (though they ended up being more like random ramblings, not in-depth reviews. It might be useful in deciding which ones to read though)(I hope)
Oh, and there are some writers which forum names are still missing, since I don’t know what they are.

’A World, Once Lost’ by Juliane Ashwood. (@Fiogan I think?)

It’s still very much incomplete (even the first night (not the introduction) hasn’t been finished yet), but it’s an interesting, be it a bit bittersweet, story.
The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic world (not earth), where you take on the role of a Diplomat , who’s only got a few more days to live. The story is very heavy on science (the kind that is of questionable reliability), which might not appeal to all readers.
The interaction with the NPC’s is nice, but limited, which is most likely caused by either the thing between spoiler tags or by that the story simply hasn’t been finished yet (though you can already play through the ending).

’Winter Fantasia’ by Adrian Caluya (@Sandstorm)

First thought: The spelling/grammar is a bit lacking. Did you have time to do a Beta-test?

This is a very short story where you play as a hungry cat in a town during a very cold winter. The ending (or at least one of them, I got the True Ending) is not exactly a happy one.
I feel it’s too short to be able to write more of a review about it.

’My Mistress Alice’ by Alex Clifford (@Alexclifford)

An assassin of sorts called for an audience with the Empress. How exciting  One little thing though. This is probably just because English isn’t my native language, but using the ‘purse or wallet’ thing to determine the MC’s gender seems to be a bit risky to me.
People who don’t know the difference might very well end up being the opposit gender from what they’d preferred to be.
Ada Lovelace… You included Ada frikkin Lovelace… (OK, I’ll shut up and read on.)

All right, now for the actual review. I really like the setting. There’s just enough real England in there to make it feel somewhat realistic, yet enough difference to make it feel like you don’t have to adhere to the actual course of history.
The MC’s profession only makes it even more interesting. The cases are nice too, and once again with just enough references to actual history to give some sense of recognition. Well, aside from the last case. I don’t really know much about the history of the british colonies.
My only complaint is that it ended too soon  (which is to be expected since this was a CScomp entry)
Other than that, this game was awesome (which was something I didn’t expect, given your entry from last year. That one really wasn’t my cup of tea)

’The Moonlight Circus’ by Amy Sasso (@Sashira)

All right, this one really doesn’t make sense, though it’s interesting all the same. Just going through rooms at random gets a bit tedious after a while, though.

’The Last Lunarian Mage’ by C.V. Cottle (@Silverstone)

Already played this one during the beta, and last time I checked it was awesome  Playing it again anyway just to be thorough.

You play as a child who’s destiny is somehow linked to the end of the magic in Lux. It’s a bit like the ‘the chosen one’ trope, only in this case the MC’s titel is ‘Bringer of Demise’ (so, obviously not a good thing). The future isn’t set in stone though, and you might still be able to change your destiny and get a new titel.

It’s even more awesome than before now  Long live the new stuff. (especially the part with Videre. I hadn’t expected Jezabel to react the way she did)

’Adventure in the Moonlight’ by Dashing Don (@dashingdon)

Yet another one that goes into the ‘doesn’t really make sense’ category. Well, it wouldn’t make sense in this world. It does in that world.
Anyway, it’s interesting, but with only limited information about how this situation came to be and it not being finished the whole thing just doesn’t make sense.

’Nature Boy’ by @Left4Bed

Genderlocked… Understandable, but a bit disappointing nonetheless. There seems to be some great destiny waiting for the MC, but the story doesn’t go that far yet, which is a bit of a pity.
It’s beginning to sound a bit like the ‘chosen one’ trope.

’Lunatic’ by Mike Walter (@Lucid)

OK… I haven’t got a clue what’s going on here… I’ll try again.

Second playthrough, still no clue.

Stuck to one person this time, and it still doesn’t make sense.

Woohoo, the MC can now have two disorders at once (no clue what that’d be useful for, but yeah… I’ll give it a go)

Still no clue what I’m doing, and at this point I’m not sure if I’ll ever find out.

’Moon’s Light’ by Mary (@ )

I must admit I’m fascinated by Thisbe and curious about what that poem means. (Oh, and the game crashes every time I reach chapter 2 (Well, at the first page of chapter 2) which is a shame since there might be more)

’Blood Moon Prophecy’ by Michie Adalbert (@honeymichie)

This is really interesting. It’s a real shame there isn’t more of it.

’Light of the Dead’ by @RockStarPenguin

This is an interesting world you’ve created. I don’t think I’ve ever played as a living skeleton before. The challenges that go with it are really interesting.

’We’ll Light A Single Candle’ by Camilla Daumer (@Stormheart)

Survival stuff with ghostly monsters  So awesome. I really liked it, and it’s a shame there isn’t more of it.

’Monsters’ by Shawn Reed (@Shawn_Patrick_Reed)

String theory  April is really good at explaining things.

Sooo first you’re out on an enjoyable camping trip, and then everything goes crazy… Not sure what to think about that.
Oh well. At least I found out what all that talk about the crazy plot-twist was about.

@Cecilia_Rosewood Thanks, I will post the other chapters after my coder is
back since she is on a work conference and I don’t want to destroy the game
code. There are more chapters now since I’ve finished writing them, but I’m
still waiting for my coder to code it all before I post the updates again.

Thank you for your kind words of encouragement, I’m looking forward to getting the official feedback and building on what I’ve done so far, although I don’t envisage it as being epically long in the end. More a sort of fast-paced adventure story really. I’m glad you liked it anyway!

@Cecilia_Rosewood Thank you for the wonderful reviews on all the stories (or ramblings, whichever you prefer). I haven’t been able to read all of them yet, so it definitely helps with my decision making. Your comments is exactly the sort of thing I love seeing here.

I finally got around to reading them all, and the ones I liked most are “My Mistress Alice”, “Moon’s Light” and “Light of the Dead”.

“My Mistress Alice” was… actually pretty long, considering how little time everyone had to finish their entries. I’m impressed. I loved interacting with the NPCs. The cases are interesting and sometimes funny, depending on how you try to solve them. The only thing I didn’t like was that a female MC had a lot more chances to fool around than a male MC.

“Moon’s Light” is my personal favourite. You have a lot of options to customize your MC’s background (even if they all have negative consequences for the MC). From the beginning I had this feeling of dread: I can’t help but think that whatever happened to Thisbe, it can’t be anything good. Even though the game was very short it made me really care about all the characters that were introduced so far. Unfortunately I had the same problem as Cecilia_Rosewood: I couldn’t access the second chapter, but got around that by looking at the code. Depending on your skills and gender you can get different jobs at the manor, and while some of those jobs can help with your investigation others will keep you far away from your target.
I would love to see this one finished.

“Light of the Dead”… I wasn’t sure what to think of this one when I read the description. I just couldn’t decide whether the game would be funny or sad. The premise could have been taken into either direction. Then I started playing it and was surprised to find out the game managed to be BOTH, even though it got pretty depressive at the end (which is great, by the way: I like it when books or games make me sad).
And it made me realize that I really want an undead pet.

Sorry to depress you =p

I really wanted to make an option to avoid the death of the pet however I wanted a scene that would draw you and Mop closer! It was fun to write for sure and it turned out a lot different from what I first intended! I’m glad you found it to be funny though I wasn’t necessarily trying to be. I defiantly wanted a lighthearted aspect of it. of course that is affect by the choices made.

Hi, thanks for the kind words! I presume by fool around you mean romance? As well as the two main NPC romance options, MCs of both genders get the chance to romance Alice if they play their cards right, although there is no compulsion to do so. In what I’ve got so far, a female MC can also romance Ramsay from Act II. I’m planning to balance that out in Act IV with another romance available for men…

I couldn’t help myself and read everyone’s entries. Except for monsters, that one I will do shortly. As I expect this one to be the longest.

A World, Once Lost
Review posted in WiP thread.

Winter Fantasia @Sandstorm
Love the beginning, instantly drew me in. I’m not a cat person but I instantly felt saddened by the story. The cat held out a hope for finding it’s lost kittens even when it was impossible. The story blended well together and I was heartened by the little girl Elizabeth. I got the bitter sweet ending, the “true ending” .

My Mistress Alice @AlexClifford1994
I was easily able to get immersed into the setting of the story. It took me by surprise when I discovered that “my service” is that of an assassin! How awesome. I’m a little sad I didn’t get to use the harpoon like device Lovelace gave me. The theme is well kept throughout the story. I want more!

The Moonlight Circus @Sashira
That first line reminded me of reading a goosebumps book. I love goosebump books, something from my childhood. I really liked the concept, going through random rooms but I would have preferred to pick the doors, maybe with something distinguishable on each door. For a moment when trying to leave I thought I wouldn’t be able to find it, I panicked and then I realised I made it ha ha ha. I have a suggestion, the MC needs a little bit more of a back story. Maybe the moonlight circus has appeared to MC and a friend/friends/love interest/sibling is with MC on the way back home from an eventful night. Say, prom or graduation or some other activity. Anyway they come across the legendary circus and MC’s companion wants to explore the circus (despite the rumours). You can willingly go in or refuse but end up following the companion inside. You loose each other and need to find them before you leave. Or you can eventually leave without finding them, saving yourself and leaving them to their demise. Maybe the MC can destroy the circus and free the wayward souls if MC uncovers their secrets and doesn’t lose their soul.

Treasure Hunting By The Light Of The Moon @Cecilia_Rosewood
I love the warning on the first page  I do love these type of adventure stories and I can pick my gender, yay! I like the way you write, the flow of your writing is easy to read and the story is easy to get immersed into. Awe I died on my first play through. Damn dinosaurs got me! o__O I was not expecting that. Woah, second play through, there are so many chapters! So I’m on the lizard/alien tour and named my guide from one of the preset choices… draco! lol. I had a chuckle as I was fondly reminded of Harry Potter. Nice explanation. A suggestion, maybe have them call themselves something other than “people”. Maybe reptilians? or reptiles? Or some made up word to describe themselves. Or maybe the word “kind” can be used? I don’t know, maybe that word is too offensive? Woah, a very long and completed story! I’m impressed.

Adventure in the Moonlight @dashingdon
First impression of the screen: nice and appealing presentation style. First sentence: fairy circle? I used to love reading these types of stories except this one is not one of those typical story lines. It follows a small town girl who yearns for adventure. She ends up finding herself far from home. This story was different than what I had expected.

Nature Boy @Left4Bed
I like your writing style. I also like the amount of planning put into the stat menu’s (codex, personality and money ect). Ahaha… you used fekkit! Check your prose for this one part:
You follow cautiously, despite the bravado in his words, his “foolproof” plans failed more often than not, often leaving you to pick up the messy pieces, despite him being two years your senior at 17. However, despite a dismal track record, you still went along with them. Something which perhaps said more about you than it did about him.
… ending of chapter one was a little annoying. I want to read the not yet working parts! Can’t wait for more. One suggestion, I know its called nature boy but it’d be better if the gender was inclusive of the female choice at least.

Lunatic @Lucid
As soon as it opens there’s promotions… nice. Just like in TLH. I like that. I played through twice and on the third time I got an error :frowning:

Over a few more play throughs it makes sense. I’m not sure what the disorders are for other than unlocking special endings.

Moons Light
Interesting at the beginning then I hit an error. :frowning: I hit the same error twice.

I think it’s also a continuity error that my MC is male and can asked to be married but is reffered to as “a woman” . Now I hit a different error.

I think I’ll try reading this one another time. Story sounds interesting but there’s so many errors.

Blood Moon Prophecy
Review posted on WiP thread.

Light of the Dead @RockStarPenguin
A story about a living skeleton and the need to feel alive again. Different. I’m curious about the two humans in the forest.

We’ll Light A Single Candle
I love this story. Reminds me a little of ZE. (A good thing). Hope this gets an update.

Monsters
Will have a read and post on the WiP thread.

Thanks again everyone

Edit: Doh! Read it better this time. Thanks @Cecilia_Rosewood for teaching me to read.

Strange error, can’t seem to replicate it.

It’s a whole list of playthroughs, and those last two screenshots are from Moons Light. See here:

^^^ahaha @Cecilia_Rosewood, you ninja’d me.

Edit: I can’t find that error again… yet.

By any chance is that line writen as
*if (variable) #choice

^^ if so I think thats just something that happens with CS sometimes.

@Silverstone It’s nice to hear that you liked my writing style (since it was basically my ‘I don’t have time to go digging through a dictionary every other minute so screw it’ writing style. Guess I should do that more often)

Yeah, I have to come up with something better, don’t I? I kinda stuck with that because of time pressure (just like with the pronouns for the other gender. Didn’t have time to do some proper research on that)

Thanks

Yay, someone enjoyed my weird little concept piece! I really don’t know whether I’m going to keep working on it. I have another several rooms sitting around, but having achieved what I was after - something totally different - I am realizing that I would have to make significant changes to make the game more understandable and enjoyable. For now, Moonlight Circus is going on the shelf with the Post-Apocalyptic Bar Game and my sci-fi murder mystery dating sim.
