Coyote (WIP- 53k words -posted 3/3-2025)

Welcome to the story of Coyote!

I’m Matilda, author of Coyote. This story places you in the shoes of a shapeshifter in North America. Hunted ruthlessly for as long as you can remember, you’ve never been able to settle anywhere. Forced to stay on the run without a home, friends, or family to rely on, you’ve been turned into a survivor.

Currently, the demo includes the Prologue, Chapter 1, and Chapter 2, placing it at about 53 000 words. Hope you’ll like it!

Introduction
The stars twinkle over the treetops, the north star a guiding light better than any compass.
Only your footfalls can be heard between the trees, paws landing almost silently in the moss.
This has been your whole life, moving from place to place, never settling down or finding a home of your own.

The hunters still nip at your heels, driving you forward.

Stopping means dying.

It is how it has always been. But perhaps it can change.
Maybe, just maybe, you could win the fight for your right to live.

Maybe you could find a home.

Characters

Liam/Lia:
The young wolf has been your dearest and only friend from before you can remember. They’ve always had a special smile just for you, a twinkle in their eyes that is only present when the two of you are alone. It’s been years since you saw them last, and you miss the way they would brighten your dour days.

Kody/Kara:
The soft bear that’s given you far more kindness than you expected. A kind smile and gentle brown eyes that always try to make you feel safe and welcome despite knowing nothing of you. They opened your home to you when you needed it most and then helped you more still.

Taylor:
The introverted bear is as far from a “people person” as one could get, a stark contrast to their older sibling Kody/Kara. They don’t like nor trust you in the least, and they make no effort to hide that. They would rather you took all your troubles with you and left.

Vincent/Vivienne:
A kind and surly stranger who stopped to help when most are content to ignore you. Their laidback attitude hides secrets they would never dream of telling you, at least, not yet.

The premise of a shapeshifter is already cool. I like wild MCs.

I really enjoyed the demo! The writing was fluid and it always felt like there were options I wanted to pick for each choice. The characters as well are super endearing, I enjoyed L’s flashback scenes a lot and can’t wait for them to appear again, and the brothers along with Nana felt alive and characters I want to learn about.

I only got 2 errors through my playthrough but one of them was when setting height, I chose short and the text had ‘set height2’ at the beginning. And the part where you respond to Nana’s offer, the choice “I don’t know what to say, I can’t thank you enough” doesn’t work because of a ‘nonexistant variable ‘friendly’’

I’m really looking forward to updates for this one!

Got a error message when selecting the choice impressive sight after it appears that were alone in the cabin. It spoke of a line 1501 i think it mentioned indents and spaces.

Ive enjoyed the demo and looking forward to seeing more when can get past the error lol. :grinning:

Thanks for letting me know about the errors. The errors should be fixed, and the new files have been uploaded.

I love shapeshifters

The writing is so smooth and engaging! I deeply adore the options provided so far, as well as the characters and, surprisingly, setting descriptions. I have to say, I actually don’t at all enjoy werewolves (when will storytellers remember to clarify two- or four-legged werewolves?!) or shifter stories but this is refreshing and not at all what I’ve come to expect (aka the false alpha/mate/fate stuff, which, yknow, is usually yikes). The banter and attitudes in this remind me of playing ttrpgs with friends. Cute!

Instantly drawn in being a shapeshifter on the run trying to adjust to a normal life. Taylor just needs to be pushed to accept the new pack member.

Shapeshifting shenanigans are always fun

Like werewolves stories better when they’re not too mystical or the alpha hierarchy. I like it when it’s just people who happen to turn into four legged or two legged wolves. Also I love shapeshifters in general, probably one of the most interesting abilities/powers.

What drew me to this IF is that it isn’t your usual werewolf/ shifter story as well because I for one have rarely seen one with a Coyote shifter as the main animal and ngl I always found smaller canines like coyotes and foxes rlly adorable. The many characters in this and how realistic and sweet they are in the bear Kody and best friend wolfy L were made me firmly interested even more.

Honestly, if I had been exposed to more stories where that was exactly the case, I’d probably feel the same way! Super pumped about this one!

Gonna add that my short mc is having multiple gay panic moments at how hot the ros are lmao.

Played this yesterday whilst going though cogdemos randomley and really loved it without seeing this post. Just a few things.

For some reason I can’t save, doesn’t matter if I’m logged in or not or saving to device or server.

Should be capital on ‘he’
