College Tennis: Origin Story (WIP) - Updated 8 Jun '25 [968k words]

Happy holidays and Merry Christmas everyone!! :christmas_tree::gift:

I haven’t gotten to replying to all the comments yet, but I loved reading them all <3 Hope everyone’s having a wonderful, super merry holiday so far (and merry x’mas if you celebrate!) :champagne:

Holiday special / sneak peeks

As mentioned previously on tumblr, as a way to celebrate 2 years on both CT:OS and Merry Crisis, I’ll be releasing 2 '‘sneak peek’ scenes for some moments that’ll be coming up in future updates! It won’t be the full scene, but hope it gives a nice teaser for what’s coming in the year ahead  I’ll aim to release these sneak peaks by Jan!

Follow the instructions in the Tumblr post (big apologies for folks who don’t have an account, I thought it’d be the easiest to consolidate everything there!) I’ll write the top-voted choice from the poll!

I’d already liked and bookmarked this one, but I want to give this some more love. I swear, it feels like this was written specifically for me. It’s all positives: I love the tennis, I love the characters, the romance I always choose feels very nice.

I have to struggle to come up with things I’d like to see that aren’t already included. One area that might have been nice is to have some acknowledgement of the mc’s race, given the conversation between Deepal and Rayyan; it felt like a point of commonality that could’ve been shared at some point because my character was Latina. I understand that would probably involve a lot more writing, though.

I suppose the only other thing I’d mention is that my character, who i made as a baseliner with priorities in Strength and Endurance (and prioritized tennis over everything else) , frequently ran into situations later in the demo where there was no way to succeed. That’s realistic, as some opponents might require more finesse or tactics, but it did end up making me feel like I’d made bad choices and might be better off restarting.

But, really, I just love this WiP. Getting an update for it was an early Christmas present, so thank you for all your hard work.

Well, I strongly recommend aggressive baseliner as a first time arch. I think it is objectively the easiest playthrough (because it emphasizes the attributes that are tested and rewarded early on, allowing you to steamroll the rest). If you were choosing all the tennis options and still not succeeding, it’s likely down to your choices in the strength/running tests (which can grant bonus points without draining too much energy if done well), or choosing the wrong options in the actual games. Try and look for choices that play to your char’s strengths (tutorial mode helps with this a lot) rather than what seems like the objectively better strategy.

dude this is so good im losing my mind:exclamation::exclamation: i can’t choose between sam, tobin and ryan so im now trapped in the pleasant hell of actually managing my saves so i can play their routes (you devil. how dare you make such good ROs)

routes review:exclamation::exclamation::exclamation:

ryan: giggling and twirling my hair man im so weak for this man it’s embarrassing how fast i folded when he apologised like i was fully prepared for excruciating blueballing, wayhaven’s A style but GODDDDDD

tobin: in a world of boys he’s a gentleman :ring::ring::ring: the kitchen scene? they’re so disgustingly cute like ??? that’s my husband your honour. (the angst tho? evil. evil author. dishonour on you, dishonour on your cow)

I actually did choose aggressive baseliner and managed to come in first in the strength and endurance tests and won my challenges (I was ranked 4th on the roster). I did have the tutorial mode on, too, which is what gave me pause. I wasn’t finding many combinations of Strength, Endurance, and/or Condition in the most recent matches (the doubles match against Cornell being the most notable) .

In that match in particular there were frequent pairings of my core stats (the ones mentioned above) with the only paired options being Tactics, Finesse, Agility and S/V. After saving and trying every combination, none were high enough to win the respective points.

Again, though, my intention wasn’t to criticize, just to point out my perception in case that wasn’t how the author intended it to feel. It may make a difference that my partner was Rayyan, so we were both baseliners. It’s possible the match just wasn’t winnable with my stats and partner.

Oh, well that is a very different picture. By the time of the first real match, you’ve had a lot of time to develop other stats. If you made it to 4th you are doing just fine.

Me: “I’ll definitely just romance one person this time”

My MC: hooks up with everybody available while thinking they may love them all, obliviously wears Sam’s school jacket in front of said hook up’s and flirts with Felix in front of the whole team because it’s funny messing with stoic people

Also Me: “
 Damn”

Damn this has developed a long way, I had played most of the story as it released but only yesterday when I started from the beginning did I realise how smoothly everything fit together. Especially love the nicknames!

Also, is Felix an RO? Cause they aren’t mentioned in the original post but the heart choices showing up for them surprised me and I was confused for a second if there was an error.

Couple of typos and errors:

The above three have wrong pronouns for female Genevievé.

I think this is an error?

Can’t wait for the singles match update!

Pretty sure Felix is just, like, some hook ups or something. Take that with a grain of salt mind you, I have no idea lol.

Yes, exactly.

The options I picked were:

“There’s a sharp pull at my gut . . . I want to kiss her”

"Shake my head, setting my jaw . . . "

"Hold my breath and remain silent . . . "

“Close my eyes, and surrender myself to the kiss”

I’ve played around with the different choices leading up to the kiss, but the error only seems to happen if you pick the option after the kiss that says, ""Shrug, it’s not a big deal to me. “There’s a first time for everything,” I say""

Every other option after the kiss correctly acknowledges that it was the first time you kissed each other, but with this one you get a bit of text that starts with: “Tobin laughs, and her eyes dance playfully. “Well, second time now,” she points out. “And giving credit where credit’s due, it was one hell of a first and second time,” she says lightheartedly.”

I filled out the update poll, but the game’s still been sitting in my thoughts. Ideally, I would have liked to be more thorough in what I wrote. There were also a lot more choices I wanted to tick and only realized at the very end that the warning sign means I need to tick less (but my notes aren’t adjusted to that and might not quite match up?).

I’m aiming to do a more thorough write-up in the future, but I just noticed 2 things playing through the Cornell double match with a character that doesn’t have high S/V:

  1. Losing your serve game cuts the match short. It sets me to a 1-2, winning the next game gets me a 2-2, then a 3-2 which leads to win_sixth_game_doubles, setting the score to 4-2. And then you just win the match. Is that
 intentional?
  2. The second one is quite funny. When you’re on the page where you lose your serve game, if you then go to your stats (“show stats”) and then go back it will reroll the dice and adjust the outcome accordingly. So if you lost the dice roll you can just go to your stats and back until you win. Maybe do the dice roll earlier in the code or put a page break?

Meh, I consider that to be a feature, rather than a bug. But then I am here more for the compelling story, cute characters and slice of life than I am for the tennis. It won’t be in the final, published game anyway because of the no saves policy. No sense in fixing something that can only happen due to the save system on Dashindon when it will never be in the final product.

Actually, it should still work, on iOS, at least, if you exit out of the game and then come back in, if the page break isn’t implemented, then yes, it will reroll

That’s not a save game issue.

Haha, I feel you! The relationship side of the game is fantastic. But now that I’ve exhausted all the options I’ve been lowkey obsessed with different builds. I’m normal, so I made an excel file of all the stat increases from the prologue and ch1. To my delight, so far every type of skill combination has been viable - as in, I’ve been able to win every match, but not succeed at every skill check. If you like, I can give some tips that might make matches easier?

I would love to hear from others how they’re playing.

Thanks for confirming that it’s not a save function issue! I was unsure for a sec

My preferred build is an endurance/agility/tactics/finesse counter puncher, with all four of those stats in the 30s, I’ve come across maybe one or two stat checks in the entire game that I couldn’t pass and all of them involved serving or the strength test
