Aww…my mc wants none of the majors that are still in. The only decent one is computer science (pre-med is also good but only if, as citadel shows, mc is 100% committed to that life which my mc here isn’'t) but it doesn’t jive at all with his tennis obsession and he will at the moment always choose tennis of unrelated study that synergises poorly with the rest of his life.
As for film my mc would have an affinity for acting and singing, though he’d need to resolve some mom related trauma first in order to seriously pursue it but I don’t really see him getting all excited over the behind the scenes work of things like special effects, directing and set construction, which I assume is what Film is mostly about.
English doesn’t really offer career prospects he’d like as teaching elementary school is about the last thing he’d want to do and “political science” is mostly a joke, sorry political scientists but as someone who has actually been a political worker for nearly a decade if it is anything it is more of an art then a science, no matter how many statistics you generate.
Yep, funny enough my mc also shares some other characteristics with Emerson as a muscular guy who likes a more lively sort of playstyle.
Astrophysics has more in common with Tennis they way I see it than a lot of the majors that are still in the game.
I don’t know if anyone mentioned this, but with the college being compared to a ivy league my eyes popped when I saw it say that tuition is essentially 5k a year lol, God I wish prices were still like that.
Haaha yeah I think you’re right in that in a text based game like this one (compared to more traditional games that allow you to play a game in real time using a controller/joystick/swiping mechanics), it’s a little harder to allow players room/nuance to decide the flow/sequence of each point. The snippet you mention above is realistic but essentially involves testing for 3 diff skills - power, finesse, agility.
Had to try to find a way to keep matches engaging AND create a simplified stat check system/mechanic that works AND somehow make it work within the coding parameters of choicescript. I’d love to keep experimenting with ways to emulate the flow of a tennis point and game better though, and would absolutely love to hear your feedback with the next few matches
Hahaha arguably the “cutest” of the ROs
Also @JayeRayce and @JBento that entire sequence related to laser tag and violence was frankly appalling and also made me snort. Also completely understand why Addie’s your fave character… @JBento.
Yaaa HAHAH fair. But a late student sitting in the front row is just asking to be picked on.
Well. They’ll certainly react, is all I’m going to say.
Awww. And @cloudy and @idonotlikeusernames, yall make valid points. I guess I just wanted to be sure I’d have a reason for each of the majors to be in/and special text that I can already imagine - poli sci because G, pre-med cause Addie (and also madness), film because D, computer science and english necause they were surprisingly the most popular aside from those 3 above. Undecided because it’s the biggest and easiest umbrella category. We’ll see though. If i dont end up having that much code to do with majors (just some flavor text here and there), I’ll add astrophysics and business back in.
@Relic Hahahaha fair - thats with MC’s full scholarship as one of the most talented players in the country going into college though.
for me its either astrophysics or pre-med. they both have some kinda connection to tennis if you think really hard on it (physics and tennis, physical health and sports). also pre-med is one of the only two STEM degrees (take it from a guy who did an arts degree, you can still make it into the workforce but youre much better off taking STEM or just going to trade school instead) and computer science is, while not bad, just oversaturated with mediocre codemonkeys who just want “muh high paying career” and have little passion or innovation for the subject so the whole thing rubs me the wrong way (people who self-learn coding will always have more soul to me for that exact reason).
Do different majors have different levels of difficulty? You seemed to hint at this with the whole “Mike English 4.0” thing, but I don’t know if that was just banter or if you were really referring to a difference in difficulty.
Yay! Hope you do. The way I see it business would be the boring practical option for my mc while Astrophysics would be cool and not something people expect of a muscular jock so it would have a nice shock factor in conversation as well as some surprising overlap with tennis.
And apart from undecided (but how long can we keep that up, until the sequel in year two or maybe even year 3? ) they were also the only two that fit my mc.
Modders FTW!!, right? Maybe I should get back into it more seriously.
But as it stands right now Computer Science is also not the worst thing if you view or have the luxury to view your formal degree as my mc does here, nothing more than the ultimate last resort fallback because the kid has other skills, tennis and singing, acting or possibly stunt work as more immediate possibilities.
Hmmm…combined with lockpicking and maybe a year of trade school computer science might also be good for a modern locksmith as the best locks of the future will likely be a two or three factor intermingling of digital and intricate analog components.
So one thing Ive only just cottoned onto with the talk of Major’s. I think journalism needs to be one considering we had the option of interning at the local paper in the summer prior to arriving at Cargill
My MC officially wants to fight Rayyan. So rude. Tennis comes before it all Rayyan how dare you accuse us of being weak. It’s on now. Rayyan just went from being my MC’s favored RO and crush to being like his least favorite person. That may change in the future but only after my MC is able to beat him at a SOLO game and rub it in his face. I love how the longer we go on the more dynamic our relationships with ROs get… Also as someone who really wants my MC to have this one friend that doesn’t revolve around school or tennis(at least his school tennis), I’m hoping Sam doesn’t confess because of what her roommate says. My MC will definitely freeze up and it will be… sad for all involved. Also question, can you only get a set off Depal? Because my MC def wanted to cry after that match was over. Imagine coming that close to winning and still losing. smh. Also I’m hoping Sam really does make it to the competition because my MC is going to be there(TOP 4 baby) and if I invited her and she’s not that seems like it’s going to be awkward. Oh I LOVE THIS. Can’t wait to see how this is going to blow up and continue on. Because my MC may have been serious about tennis before but after Rayyan’s flagrant insult to their skills now… It’s On.
I just stumbled upon this wip last night and i liked it way more than i thought i would, now i can’t stop reading!! really awesome writing and such a breath of fresh air between all the usual fantasy and supernaturals stuffs. I’m not quite done with it yet but I’m looking forward for more to come!
I’m just curious about one thing, is there a way to beat Deepal in the mini match? I managed to win the first set and got the achievement but i lost next two set without having much choices to make. So my competitive ass was just wondering if it’s an auto lose game or i can win it somehow lol
I’ll gladly keep providing feedback as the updates roll out, one thing I would suggest is that it is difficult to really pick an option as I can tell what to pick as I know what skills it is checking for but not what the values it requires are, generally this wouldn’t be a problem but as we generally are making checks for multiple skills at once, I feel like adding what the numerical requirement is might help ease doubt about if something is going to work out or not.
Like if one option requires Strength + Agility, does it require a minimal level of each or a combined amount from both, i.e. does it require both strength and agility to be 10 or does it require a total skill sum of 20 so the distribution doesn’t need to be equal, that is my biggest point of confusion when checking what to select in matches, as it might be difficult to know if I meet the requirements for a specific option or not.
I feel that at least making it more clear what you need to pass the skill check would help in that regard.
Oh god yes Sam is so cute, I couldn’t help but have a grin reading her POV, specially given how my character just wants to be in a relationship with Sam, they aren’t going to give up or stray away, the distance with these two only makes them want to be with each other even more.
Also Lasertag is serious business, in all seriousness I am just overly competitive so I can be intense in both the Tennis Court and the battlefield of Lasertag, ok now in all seriousness it is just fun to win specially when your team depends on you, and yes Addie is great, I would romance Addie if I could and wasn’t already romancing Sam, my character decided to take Pre-Med as well, they figured if they can’t make it as a pro or something happens to them that makes them not be able to play being a sports doctor is not a bad thing, quite literally they live for Tennis lol
Depending on how you do in the two doubles matches you get an initial pairing; there’ll probably more options once in-game Monday’s conversation comes around. If you want to switch from Rayyan to Tobes, you probably should accept Tobes’s offer when they prompt and go talk to Rayyan about it.
Yes - @JBento stated the way I’ve decided to standardise how the tutorial mode hint looks to capture the difference btw the two stat checks, but I do know there are parts where I havent cleaned it up properly yet. The idea behind both checks is:
for checks where it’s the sum of both skills, one skill can make up for lack of skill in the other, e.g. tactics + endurance > X would mean playing smart could help balance out inadequacies in endurance because you control rallies more.
for checks where it’s skill 1 AND skill 2 have to be a certain standard, usually this means things are being performed sequentially or theres two parts to the strategy (e.g. sprinting fast to get a ball, then hitting it hard enough to win the point would be agility > X and strength > X.
