Choice of Rebels: Uprising — Lead the revolt against a bloodthirsty empire!

Just to head off anyone else saying “wow, the game used to have Breden stealing a kiss from the MC?” – it didn’t. As Mara used to recognize, back when she first started headcanoning about Breden the mind-controlling sunburned sex fiend:

We now return you to burning Breden at the stake.

We disagree on that but I’m willing to accept less-than-stellar judgement as one of Elery’s character flaws and leave it at that.

It’s not like most of my characters don’t have a blind spot for Breden either. He’s still my rebel husbando no matter how frustrating he can be. :kissing_heart:

I always wondered: If you send away Breden right after you escape the prison then will they appear later again? Even if I play an MC who would want to get rid of them normally I wait until chapter 4 bc there we can kill them making sure that they really can’t cause any more problems (also they have their uses in chapter 2 so I try to make the most of the situation).

Absolutely.

Or boost the rebellion, either. A Breden you send away may not feel very friendly towards you, but xhe’ll continue working to spread the uprising.

And maybe fight me or my group of rebels if we encounter eachother again. It’s better to permanently get rid of possible threats. At least that’s how my ruthless MC thinks.

don’t make me remember that demo Havie Or I will have nightmares… But reading all now Is really funny. And the happy when i could choose not kissing blood mage…

Also I ended with options to not be a pro helot hippie. So everyone happy. However i wouldn’t be surprised if Breden is The spawning of Xaos to destroy the entire universe

Still I have to create a character that has Breden in its they rebellion and the kids… But lol they are so annoying. I prefer my slow calm rebellion with Mr Pumpkins.

But in boosting the rebellion she shall no doubt be spreading such dangerous and heretical ideas as helot emancipation and an end to Harrowing.

Not to get all conspiratorial on you, but doesn’t that basically confirm Breden isn’t the spy? Although I appreciate it may be a bit more complex (xhe may have turned double-agent for example) the phrase “continue working to spread the uprising” rather suggests Breden has been wholeheartedly on Team Rebellion all along.

Unless Breden has been a spy for a hitherto-unsuspected third faction all along?! A triple-agent sent by Halassur perhaps!

@Havenstone My concern is less that Shayard city is not near the center of Shayard province and hence the center of the old Kingdom of Shayard, and more that the old capital would have been located so close to the border of a rival great power. I would note Washington is a poor counter-example since it was in the center when it was built, unless your point is that the city of Shayard was originally in the center of Shayardene strength. I concede Russia is a good counter-example with St. Petersburg serving as such even better than Moscow. I am a bit puzzled why the old Shayardene monarchy would not have expanded to create more of a buffer around the capital. Based on Yed Gaverne’s story, has the Abhuman side of the border always been mainly desert? That could explain the lack of need or benefit to expand in that direction.

I'm not sure you appreciate the vastness of the realm, my dear
              *if tone = 3
                the realm is vast,
${kuria} ${lname}." The Leilatou scratches one stubbly cheek. "We stand here a hundred leagues from Shayard City—but it's another three hundred from the Court out to Linos' home in the Easter Reach. The monarchs of old had knit together quite an impressive little empire in the name of Shayard before the first Theurges burst onto the scene, you know… No, I'd not take Conte Phrygia's place for all the silver of Erezza."

Could we get a scale on that map? For example, how far is it from Rim Square to the city of Shayard? From lore, the XOR world is supposedly round. That raises the question of what kind of projection is that map? Is that a Mercator projection? If there are ever any further updates to Game 1, I would suggest if possible maybe adding the World Map to the World Index Geography section.

One failing? No, sadly not just one failing. If it only were one failing, even my main MC might reluctantly continue to tolerate Breden.

The problem is Breden continues to demonstrate what is at best either cowardice or ineptitude such as when Breden is sent to bring in Horion/Linos. That is why my MC would have preferred to have Breden tried and executed for criminal negligence/dereliction of duty after the food poisoning.

Yes.

Breden might spread “a” rebellion if you count Breden shoring up the support for the Xthonic Canon as doing THE Rebellion a favor. If shoring up support for the Xthonic Canon is actually harmful to the Rebellion, well then… In any case Breden has at best the equivalent of CHA 2 although I suppose like the MC perhaps that could increase. The MC can get other spokespeople, and it would be hard though I’m sure not impossible to find one more untrustworthy than Breden.

This being the case, my MC will have to choose between being “tragically” late at stopping Radmar from doing the Rebellion a favor by killing Breden, or executing Breden personally. I know it sets a flag on the violence of the Rebellion, but that might be worthwhile anyway. I also doubt Breden will be the only individual of questionable loyalty the Rebellion must handle.

The thing is the Hegemony wants helot rebellions. They gather undesirables in one place, they’re easy to put down, and it’s more food for the harrower. With that in mind, it’s plausible the Hegemony is deliberately inciting small scale rebellions, using people like Breden.

Until this last one that is, but we also come along exactly in the right time and place for the “perfect” storm, or calamity from the pov of the Hegemony.

Helped along by the fact that the Hegemony is already in terminal decline. The system that made them strong is now slowly but surely becoming their downfall.

By the way I just encountered the horse eating scene in the de Merre raid for the first time and I thought instantly of you @idonotlikeusernames

You’ve blown my mind! So much to look forward to as the series develops :ok_hand:t6:

Shayard Land is the most appealing , with it close to sea resources , it is more like Barcelona and Valencia, i would love to rule that

Wiendrj is good with the forest and mountain… i could also rule like the High Elves

The thing is, that is what Linos and if I recall correctly a Phalangite captain supposedly believe. Even if they believe it, that does not make it actually true. This discussion has come up before and will doubtless come up again, but what I think is the most likely explanation is the following: I think the Hegemony is not capable of preventing helot uprisings completely and that the Hegemony also does not desire those uprisings. The Hegemony does not need an actual helot uprising as an excuse to Harrow more helots. However, I think the Hegemony feels that it is better for helot uprisings to be viewed as the Hegemony’s plan than for the Hegemony to admit it is powerless to stop helot uprisings from happening.

I definitely agree about the advantages of having a capital close to the sea.

I love the High Elves. My forum name is in Elvish for a reason even if it is not entirely in High Elvish.

Ok, new theory: Breden is a secret Halassuri agent, raised from birth in an elite school of ninja-assassin-spies. Sent to infiltrate Karagond, report information and foment insurrection, there was no way the mission could go wrong.

The only thing they didn’t count on? Love.

Why would they undermine the rebellion then at the 11th hour by poisoning the food?

I personally never thought Breden did the poisoning, I’ve always had xhim (is that the right pronoun usage?) pegged as a red herring with regards to the spy plot. My money’s been on Ol’ J for a long time.

My money would be on the MC’s father. If anyone in the band is spiteful enough to poison everyone, it would be him and the MC’s father could plausibly blame Breden for dragging the MC into things. I found it interesting that the MC’s father supposedly was not touching his food the night of the poisoning.

Oh man, if it’s him he’s seriously a bad dude, particularly if playing as helot. That’s really messed up, to actively support the regime that oppresses you.

Thinking back on Sneaks’ suggestion of more complex conspiracies at work, though, I don’t find it unreasonable to think there’s more than one malcontent operating in the rebellion. The spy and the poisoner could be different folks with different motives, for example.
