Imagine the MC forcing everyone to watch Disney’s Hercules.
…I just wonder if they really are all that clueless about popculture…not all of them grew up since their birth on Olympus like Saint (Who as was pointed out knows still at least enough about popculture to make a reference). Aeson only came to Olympus after his mother died (though even if she was still alive I guess at the latest after the gods lost hold of the Bearer he would have been forced to life on Olympus anyway…) and didn’t Cally tell something about her spending her summers with her family and Ares in the past or something? And Adonis seems to remember his family also rather well, no idea how much contact he has to them, but if many demigods have active contact to their mortal families I somehow would expect at least some things to stick…
General consensus for my main MC’s is that at least the Muses were on point/best thing about the film.
My Hades!MC – who loves her dad very much – would probably be most pissed off though :)) --> probs also not too happy with how Zeus was written too :))
As if Zeus actually gives a shit about his kids :'D
HE HAS TOO MANY. I don’t think he even knows 90% of them exist.
I don’t want to be forced to have a NERDY MODERN CHARACTER WHEN MY CHARACTER IS NOT NERDY. it would be totally awful being obliged to have a type of character that goes totally against my character. Comment about things there is no way she knows about. I don’t find it funny. Maybe a choice if you want to be a nerd talking about nerd culture or not. In my case a big NO
@Sammysam Thats where the whole vagueness on exactly how much the other Demigods know about modern pop culture comes into place. I mean, I believe it can be confirmed that they aren’t completely clueless, but are they aware of recent trends that the MC would be able to reference?
It also comes into question whether they even care enough to pick up any references when among mortals. To them, knowing the theme song to Friends is probably useless knowledge.
@squarelyblue Without a doubt the Muses are the best 10/10. As for how the gods themselves are portrayed, my best guess is that no-one will be pleased since the movie seems to intentionally portray the gods in the most stereotypical type of way.
I’m not suggesting that they’re clueless about pop culture; just that the MC has a distinct advantage due to the fact that they’ve been living in the land of the mortals.
Even if the demigods visited their families during summers, it’d be like resurfacing and interacting with the land after being submerged underwater for long periods of time. They’d know some, but not much.
But the MC has lived among the mortals, they’ve lived on the land; they’ll know far more pop culture than the demigods ever will.
Except for @poison_mara, but that’s the general consensus I’m opting for.
Guys @Rohie wanted let open what type of education Athena gives to us. so both YOUR MODERN IDEA AND MY HAVE SAME CANON VALUE… ZERO. so ask for being FORCED everyone in pop culture weird references is harm a lot role-playing value and options. It’s obliged people to have exactly same nerd modern character. So please @Rohie don’t forced that on people make it optional if you must add lame jokes.
I specifically stated the option, Mara. Don’t worry. Nobody wants to force you into silly pop culture references.
I’m not even sure that the MC could reference recent trends…being on the run would probably making it difficult to keep track of such things…
To them, knowing the theme song to Friends is probably useless knowledge.
To be honest even for many people that would recognize it it’s still useless knowledge.
…But the other demigods did too? Some just for a longer time as others with variuos degrees of actual interaction with their godly parent… (and considering some of the brought up scenarious it pretty much sounded like imagine them being very clueless)
The rest wants lol. You were far more understanding.
If we’re going into recent trends, let’s consider that Lavei went on the run about two years ago (if I remember correctly). So in 2014, we had…uh…okay, not Fall Out Boy, not Panic! at the Disco, not Soulja Boy…
Honestly, I only really remember trends from this year and trends from when I was an emo kid, nonconforming as can be.
WAIT, THERE WAS GANGNAM STYLE.
insert Lavei going up to everyone, like…
No idea about none of those. I am not American and I am not a teen. And even like teen i hate that nerdy puns I found them lame as hell. Mara doesn’t make lame puns i even hate the highway to heaven Rohie add already.
Not for the amount that the Bearer did. Every other demigod visited Earth to be with their family from time to time but lived primarily on Olympus. The Bearer was the only one who lived permanently on Earth.
And @poison_mara I don’t recall ever asking for pop culture references to be implicated in the game without the option to not go for them. If I did, then I apologise but I never asked for people to be forced into references.
Also, re: gods knowing pop culture stuff…I recall that Zeus REALLY likes 80s music, and there was mention of Woodstock.
So I’m guessing Friends is about the most recent thing they’d actually appreciate
I understand you Everyone except mara has the consesual concept we are Modern educate. I don’t know the wording sounded everyone except me want to be a nerdy lame puns launcher with bro music incorporated.
They didn’t. At least Calypso and Adonis lived most of their childhood together with their mortal family, I don’t know if we have an exact age at which they started to life on Olympus but some of the brought up examples (especially those ffrom the ninties/early 2000s) make no sense for them not to know about considering that this would be the time they were still living with their mortal family.
Again, I’m not suggesting that they’re clueless to pop culture. Just because they lived with their families when they were younger doesn’t mean they don’t live primarily on Olympus.
The literal only thing I’m suggesting is that the Bearer may possibly have a larger knowledge of pop culture owing to the fact that the Bearer alone has lived their entire life within the mortal world.
I’d figure that they’d know things like the FRIENDS theme song – maybe not too familiar with the entire series except really memorable moments like “WE WERE ON A BREAK” – or yeah, early 2000’s era Disney :)) but maybe not to the depths of internet hell --> mostly because I like the idea of MC introducing memes to Olympus and watching chaos ensue
You bring up a good point! I neglected to consider that the MC probably wouldn’t care enough either to bring it up, considering what they’re being faced with.
Also, I’d like to apologize if I made it sound like the other Demigods were completely clueless about pop culture, that wasn’t my intention. I do believe the other demigods are aware of some things, but it wasn’t specifically stated on what everyone on Olympus is generally aware of, so we’re left to speculate on what the MC would know vs. what the other Demigods as a whole would know.
But then again, perhaps it’s better this topic is left rather vague so each individual reader can come up with their own interpretation.
