Built-in Save System for IF's?

Is there a way in which a built-in Save System like those found on Dashingdon and CoGdemos can be implemented in published IF games?

It would be so awesome if players could just save their games automatic like they do on the browser. Is it possible for us to have this officially? And what would we need to do to make it happen?

It’s actually easy. A lot of script flying around online let’s anyone with PC do it. But some cog personnel are against implementing save like dashingdon as a system. They often say it destroy replayability. So some authors create their own save system usually in the stats screen.

There isn’t. This is something people have been asking for since 2010 when I first discovered CoG. Note that the dashingdon and CoGdemos save system is an unofficial addition to choicescript. It is not officially supported by CoG.

If you’re playing on steam, I think there’s a way to install it, but I haven’t tried it. I don’t think it’s possible on the iphone/android omnibuses.

The closest way to have it in an official release is to use the checkpoint feature. I believe it allows you to load a checkpoint from the stats screen, but (I think) you need to save a checkpoint at fixed locations. You’ll have to code it in yourself.

I get it. It’s a personal point of frustration for me as well if I’m unceremoniously killed by a bad choice and need to replay the game all over again.

Well… Someone talked about a petition a long time ago… If you’re thinking of making change happen…

I would kill for a built in save system. I don’t think we’ll be getting one any time soon, however. I believe some staff has expressed in the past that a save system goes against replayability and impact of choices (which I don’t agree with). @ChanceOfFire has summed it up pretty nicely, but here’s the link to an unofficial save manager that still works by the incredible @yasirkula. They’re also incredibly helpful. You can also “cheat” by looking at the game’s code if it’s published on Steam. For mobile, however, I don’t think there’s any way :frowning:

Keep making noise about it? :stuck_out_tongue: Squeaky wheels get the grease and all that. I totally agree with you btw. Virtually every other VN has a working save system except CoG, which needs it most!
