August 2024 Writer Support Thread

I want to see this mystery solved now! (Also amused they know what a sheep is, but not what a goat is.)

Coming up with titles for games is so weird.

Either it’s just there, pretty much from the start, exactly what it should be.
Or I have to give the game a descriptive working title, that it will literally keep for years, because no suitable ideas arise.

That is my experience as well.

I can’t deal with working titles, I have to have something that feels right - if I have something I don’t like, I know it’ll end up sticking and I’ll have to keep it forever.

I just put whatever. I dont care titles at all. I understand that are super important for marketing. It must be that I am so bad remembering names that I just dont lose many time thinking on them

That’s why I use working titles that are just a very simple description, which absolutely couldn’t work as a title.
Like:

Halloween 2024
Empath Game
Horror Romance Game
Fae Castle Game

which are actual titles of some of my unnamed projects.

I’m still having this urge to name a project “Series Cancelled”, just because it would make a super confusing WIP thread.

Is that a romance game with horror tropes, or a game where the romance is just horrific?

Picturing this as a F2P idle mobile game now.

[Insert self-deprecating joke about writing skills]

I am not enough of a monster to create something like that.
But a part of me have long wanted to create a beautiful, just gorgeous, fae-themed city-building game

That’s why, when I do need a working title, I go with something that I know isn’t going to stick at all. My very first manuscript mumble mumble years ago was originally titled “Awesomesauce Kickass Novel.”

Most likely, I’m late to the party but my suggestion would be to code:

  • 3 checkpoints for the wild chapters and
  • 2 custom save slots the reader can save at any point.

The reason I feel the custom slots would be appreciated is because there are times (especially at choice sets) where a reader may desire to save, just in case a choice is not what they expected, or because there is an interesting pathing they may wish to try but not at the expense of starting over.

I am giving 5 custom slots in my game (along with the chapter saves) but I feel it is no skin off of my nose to give the reader as much choice in this matter as I can.

I still don’t have the code working properly, so I understand the debugging concern, but on the other hand the save slot code is pretty standard.

Edit:

Congrats! This is awesome news.

My jam title was originally: “Discojam”

Mi project name is El vegetariano la quiere meter. And I won’t translate into English. I have already said how bad I am with names

As the second writing week starts for August, someone cut and stole the fiber optic cabling connecting our community to the Internet.

The good news is that it “allowed” for me to take the time to fix my new vacuum cleaner, which I unintentionally messed up in my first time using it

The bad news is that it destroyed my intentions to get off to a good start on working on Patchwerks today. Regroup and charge once more tomorrow!

Also, I got back online and saw 50 posts in the support thread while I was gone!

You guys brought a tear to my eye, when I saw this!

Thank you all for continuing to make this thread a success!

Welcome back to the thread @ChanceOfFire – it is encouraging seeing you engaging with the community once more

Currently wondering: who in their right minds names a screen reader HAL?

(I’ve progressed from my research on IF systems to TTS systems.)

As a TTS user, you should really see what kind of names the developers come up for these things

I named my old PC GLaDOS, and I used it for a decade. It’s still sitting in a corner of my front room.

Either I’m immune to deadly neurotoxin, or the name really doesn’t matter so much.

I bet all you nerds would appreciate my phone’s lock screen.

So true. My current project has kept its title, not as a working title, but just the title for years, but two months ago I started thinking that maybe it shouldn’t be. I wonder if it doesn’t imply the genre it’s supposed to imply. It’s about a seaside town that happens to have a variety of non-human townsfolk (merfolk, trolls, dwarves, etc.), so it’s called Creatures of Kellevere but now I’m like… “Creatures” might sound a lot more beastly than it’s supposed to when everyone’s humanoid most of the time. So some people might hear it and think it’s a horror/monster type of thing. So I’ve designated it as merely a working title now, and am brainstorming different possibilities.

I just saw Apple’s new policy starting in November for Patreon users.

I think it is short sighted stupidity, but it is totally expected. Way to force a 30% price increase on all subscribers and force subscriptions!

Bleh.

Just one more thing to consider for if/when I ever set such up.

Oooo, this is a fun idea! Your feedback is banger, as always, and I’ll give it a ponder. Thank you!

Mmh. Seems I won’t be even considering anymore.
