I see what you mean now. The goblins we encounter here are spritely little gits running around the pipes and wire, who do actually use a load of chemicals. I think it fits to have top gobbos be chemists and things., considering their penchant for traps and poisons.
Also, perhaps the goblins of Goblonia might have their own, very ungrounded, take on industrialisation. I like this idea. Perhaps we can see something of it later in the game…
This world certainly has room for industrial goblins. Somewhere. Thanks for giving me many ideas!
PATREON UPDATE: A Shriek of Ash and Fire, UPDATE 2.0, 250K words total
Fearless patrons, here is the second update. This and the last update (1.5 and 2.0) are exclusive to the Krog Tier for the next week or two. The second update will be exclusive here for the rest of the month.
The update is now hosted on a private DashingDon listing, giving you access to the save game system.
HOSTED GAMERS- Update 1.5 will be with you in a week or two and update 2.0 will be with you around the end of the month. A benefit of getting it a bit later will be less bugs and typos (hopfully).
For update 2.0:
-Return from your expedition in the ash lands and report to none other than COmmodore Evagrey, the Lord of Despair.
-Spread dissent for your favoured faction or weaken your enemies.
-Investigate sightings of an intruder… depending on how your expedition in Zthullu went.
-Potentially get closer, very close, to Sera, Gibleti, the Evagrey Twins and/or Colonel Thrayton.
Can it be played offline? I really like your work, both in this one and the Orctober in-coming one, but I kinda work in a place that doesn’t let me have a good connection, with too much free time between doing things so I need to do something not to fall asleep and I’d never sleep while reading your awesome books.
This new update is only on Patreon so far. Once I release the new updates, so you and Hosted Gamers can have a peek, I can arrange to email you a compiled version of the game- though it won’t have a save system or pictures. I haven’t put in the Choice of Games checkpoint system yet as it interferes with testing- this will hopefully come soon!
It would be tricky to email you a HG version right now as it is full of all the new update stuff!
If you are a Patreon, email me on the site and I will arrange to send you an early access version with all the updates ASAP.
Thanks for your support, Nevantyr. And for your ORCTOBER genius!
Only recently had time to fully read this demo and my i am surprised, this is a completely different style with a new concept and i positively love it so far , i will however not read this wip anymore and wait for full release , your work deserves to be appreciated with fresh eyes.
Thanks for your praise and great to see you giving another of my projects a go.
Yes, although in the same world, this is a very different style of story. It is a risk as I do not want to put people off who enjoyed Green Journey but I had lots of ideas, simmering in my head, that needed to get out.
There will be time for orcy stories again, later
You’re welcome to visit anytime to make sure I keep on track- by that, I mean have an interesting and enjoyable project.
What I like about the current update so far, the different professions feel distinct, the actions you make, depending on your job,are engaging, and how some of the factions interact with the crew. Seeing how your gang are adjusting, and the ways, you can involve them in crawler politics. Also whatever is happening to Sera makes my skin crawl.
I enjoy seeing the different factions in the crawler, who is supporting which faction and some of the potential benefits, we can be rewarded with later. I also like how the different ways your profession can influence, which factions you can meet and establish connections with, more easily. Except for one, the Etherneer, which seems to be neutral like Switzerland, iirc there is no mention of politics is this job, which makes me wonder, when the revolution happens, which side they will choose.
I also like how the skill checks, aren’t soul crushingly hard. There is some wiggle room, for other skills to pass a skill check.
One of the biggest surprises for me, was the escape path, I wasn’t expecting to enjoy it as much as I did. As we are separated from our friends and gang. Brakka I wish we could explore, because we don’t know what we need to do to earn our keep. The dwarf couple arguing, funniest characters so far, loved that.
New Yeirshee on the other hand, I really want to see want happens there. Becoming a pirate/privateer, has me questioning what sort of characters we going to meet, how big the raiding band will be, what’s the composition of vehicles and more. Also equipping the steamsteed and boom tube, makes me feel like an alternate version of Mad Max, all I need now is a leather jacket. Quest for the best drip achievement. The engineer, Tinnafri, love the quirky tinkerer, who’s a bit too into guns and machines.
In regards to the pirate path, will we be able to earn epithets. Something like if we’re ruthless, merciful, trickster and other aspects, of our personality, skills and heritage we can use for our pirate branding. Similar to Edward Teach aka Black Bread. I imagine an epithet used in this world, would be something like, “Iron Beard” if your an intimidating dwarf and dyed our beard, or something like “Ash Drake”. I don’t know if this idea would work for this story, but it’s a thought I wanted to share.
Sorry i didn’t write this sooner, was busy with a few things.
I’m open to being credited, if you feel that I deserve it, in the final version.
Thanks, nom
I know what my next job is in October. @MrSpec84Gymjim hunter.
I’ve also found a couple more typos and some bugs.
You stroll up to the armed dwarf, your hands still raised. “You lot could be in trouble. Why, if you were in Dreadful turf I reckon you’d be dead by now. But we are are not like that.” You come to a stop next to the dwarf. His shoulders rise and fall under his leather-and-cog suit, though his gun is still loosely trained on Shiv.
“It’s not your fault. The higher ups should have told you that you can’t come around here without an invitation. Look, leave your lamps here and we’ll screw in the orbs. Some us know how all this stuff works. Come on, how about that?” You rest a hand on the dwarf’s shoulder and offer an honest smile.
Is it suppose to say some of us?

“Right, I see,” says the woman. "A nimble two-wheeler, fragile and twitchy. This accelerates quicker than anything, though a chuck of rock in the breeze could knock it over. For this, you better be extremely agile. If you’re a ponderous sort, even knowing about gadgetry won’t stop you from coming a cropper on a steed. Or, you might be one of the rare few who are very, very lucky. Also, at a push, you can fit a passenger on it. They’ll shared the back of your seat.
This one made me laugh.

Bugs
If you refuse to sign on the train then choose banishment, under the weapon section in show stats, you get your profession’s preferred weapon description, even though I refused.
Playing as a halfling, sleight of hand skill, improving charisma, Shadelurker. Then on the crawler, joining the rebel strike, the texts said that I used my “tinkering genius,” but my ingenuity was only 23%. On further investigation, if I increased my Intuition to 50%+ the text changes, saying how I used the boggarts to stop the marines.
Made the corrections and bug fixes. The more minor bug was a misplaced use of the sleight of hand skill.
Love the idea of gaining an epithet for your ash piracy. i was already thinking about giving the player a chance to name their crew, but for the MC to gain their own notorious moniker is a great idea!
The updates have slowed because I now have to ensure that patrons, on my new Patreon, get early access benefits, for up to a month. So, for this month, the Hosted Game update will be divided into 2, to gradually build up so the Patreon is about a month ahead.
Everything will, of course, be released on the HG forum (it has to be by the law of Cog!!!), with a slight wait.
UPDATE 2 (97K, 250k total- 14th August 2024) -With Vin and Sera, with a squad of ash marines, venture into Zthullu to confront a Yonder threat. -Take part in an intense battle and uncover the secret behind a new enemy weapon. -Learn new skills. -Prepare for the coming revolution.
Things really heat up in this update. I wanted to show the encroaching revolution, how it agitates the crawler folk and leads them to question their future in a hotbed of dissent.
You will also meet Coireal, an important character who could fundamentally empower your chances in the coming political storm. If she doesn’t die.
I hope you all enjoy. Please let me know if you find any typos or bugs!
Just finished my first playthrough of pretty good quick question tho are you supposed to get skills from the trainings or just stat boosts because it kind of seems like atleast some of them should have skills
Hello just wanted you to know that There is typo in Charmer Chameleon it’s in stats page written as Charmer Chameloen.
suggestion
Basilisk I’ve done a lot for them, I try to give them a chance but they’re seemingly too greedy and have utterly ruthless disposition, would it be good to make every faction at least gray so people have hard time to choose?
I didn’t do anything to undermine Basilisk, rejected the twins and other faction, I didn’t play politics, I do their errant overall talk good about them but still not enough.
In the Coireal event I done nothing and say neutral things like friendship need to be earned and they keep accusing MC of collusion with her pushing MC to kill people the worse part is the thing they installed in MC’s head, threatening to kill MC friend, overall very unfriendly attitude to MC, this is comically too evil or it is Author intention to push player away from picking Basilisk faction?
“Jumping to attention, you share a curious glance with Vin and Sera before slipping down the hatch and making your through several winding corridors to Father Roach’s quarters. His door is open.”
The Basilisk is always trying to mess around with people’s brains. As opposed to the rebel or royal route, the Basilisk will try to lock you into theirs. The Basilisk does not see what it does as evil but as necessary to shape the tools of the ‘certain future.’ It is very… binary for the Basilisk cult.
If you wanted to follow the Basilisk- you must kill Coireal. It is what they demanded of it. If Coireal lives, the Basilisk cult will suspect you as a traitor.
I am not sure exactly which training you mean- there are several. If you mean the non-job sessions you can pick, on the crawler after you return from the wastes, then yes you do get skills AND stat boosts for SOME of them.
You can get a runecraft or fighting skill here. If you already possess the thug or tinkerer skill, the new skills will mean little but the stat boosts will still come in handy. The etiquette training only improves the charm stat, with no associated trait. Gambling improves no skills but offers a chance to get gold- or to cheat.
Thanks for the head-up about the game not showing on DashingDon Lucifur. I always forget to check the box to signal the new update.
