A SHRIEK OF ASH AND FIRE 1(WIP) [approx 80K UPDATE, 885K+ TOTAL-13th April 2025] (995K on Patreon)

@Aeternitas
Got it! Thanks. I do despair when finding things like this. It just doesn’t register in my head when I test things.

@mihai899

Thanks for playing another of my games! Hope you enjoy it and the future updates. Depending on how things go, this one might be two books- part 1 and part 2 (won’t need more than that), to keep it manageable. If this happens, I’ll make the saves transferrable.

Cheers, you two!

Oooh and I forgot earlier! @Yen_Lag WAAAAGHHHHHH!!!

Ah alright but why do you need the tinkering skill to get the runecrafting skill because for example one of my characters is a half elf ether user so I thought rune crafting could be cool to use
and the dialogue made it seem like I would’ve gotta the skill I think it said something like
“I knew more about runes than the old trainer but the movement training was useful” something along those lines
so it seemed like I should’ve gotten the skill
(Also side note I just realized you don’t have a link from the game to this discussion forum did you mean to not have that or did you forget)

Hi Lucifur- You don’t need to have tinkering to get the runecraft skill. I just mean that if you already have the tinkering skill then runecraft will cover most of the same skill checks. In this case, the most significant player reward is the stat boost. It is still worth getting if you an engineer to cover all the bases though.

You should still get the skill, even if you have tinkering. I will check it.

You mean the DashingDon game doesn’t link here? It never crossed my mind. Is that what most people do? I didn’t do this for the whole of the last game- unless I have been very forgetful. I think you are much more of an expert with how these things work than me. I will put a link in, it is a very good idea!

EDIT: Yep, just found the space to put the link. All these links!!! Haha. It should now come with the option to go to this discussion. Cheers, my friend.

EDITEDIT: Just checked and the runecraft skill should appear no matter what other skills your character has. Like you said, if you already have engineering knowledge you will get some text explaining how you already know most of the stuff, but that you brushed up on your skills.

Alright and yea I don’t think the skill went thru I mean granted I could’ve missed it but I don’t think it was their

And I just have a lot of free time so I’m on dashingdon a lot and a lot of games have it there so I thought I’d check

I think this game is a combination of your Orc Simulator CYOA and Mad Max. After all it takes place after An Unexpectedly Green Journey

It is always a big help. There are so many variables to take into account when making these games that, sometimes, real life variables, like setting DashingDon update status and link statuses to TRUE, get forgotten!

@Valixon
Hi Valixon, be careful out on those ash lands! Vin will now call you ‘sister’ if you are female.

@Patrick_Cody02
Hi Patrick,

I would wholeheartedly agree, there is a big slice of Mad Max in here. In the next (currently Patreon exclusive) New Yeirshee update, you get an even larger slice of this if you choose not to focus on magic.

I wanted to sprinkle a few different inspirations into this game and hopefully create a unique-ish feeling IF.

Cheers, Roachies and Road Warriors!

Does anyone else feel like the game is to easy? Maybe It’s because we are still in the start. But almost all skill checks, have an option for all skills, and if you focus on one skill in the prologue you can essentially pass every skill check with no challenge.

Also writer, could you consider, instead of having percentage for the skills, have a cool written skills, like choice of rebels or lords of infinity.

@Francisco_Crespillo

It is very helpful to get comments on the difficulty, although I approach it differently than you.

All the % checks can be adjusted based on feedback, like yours, to help me reach a decent point. This is certainly something that needs fiddling with. The difficulty is going to creep up but I am consciously not making a game, or trying to make a game, that soft-locks a player or forces them into death spirals, which is not as easy as it sounds. This is just my philosophy for this game but it is something I will not stray from if I can help it.

However, you can build a character with a different set of skills which can give you very different events in the crawler around ‘trunk’ events which progress the story. I am prioritising this as I feel it will encourage players to want to play again with a different build. If you really want to fail and die, you still can :smiley:

A Shirek of Ash and Fire has both percentage skills and written traits. You may fail some skill checks as a percentage but if you have a valid trait you will still pass. This will mean that you have the potential to do things outside of your MC’s main skills. If you look on the stats screen you will find you have traits as well as % skills. At some points in the game, you can learn new skills which will let you pass certain checks or open new options.

Cheers!

EDIT:

Also, just a note on your character’s build. In the Patreon update, currently expanding the New Yeirshee section, if you are a mage build you will get a very different path to choose from, so this variety of experiences (which I hope for) is not just in the crawler. This could also be the case in Brakka- haven’t written that all out yet so can’t say for sure! What I do know is that dwarves will be getting some special attention here.

I think it’s important to remember that there will be no save function when the game is actually released so any dead end means a restart when you’re trying to adjust the difficulty.

Hi Dragomer,

Yes, this is a valid concern. DashingDon spoils us!

However, I will implement the CoG checkpoint system in the end. I have done this with An Unexpectedly Green Journey- this even allows for some checkpoints to be overwritten in hub areas to act as a versatile save. So, hopefully, this will not be a big problem in the finished game.

I do suffer from wanting to keep the MC in the world of my creation as long as possible, no matter if they hate it or love it. They must ENDURE!!!

Also- I am one of those folks who likes putting games on ‘story mode’ so I can enjoy the lore, story and exploration without worrying about being killed all the time. I cannot help but put some of my own preferences inside these games.

Yo I can’t play the new update with my save. The demo ends for me when I picked a ride and a gun.

Hi ZipZoop,

The New Yeirshee update is currently only available on Patreon. The HG update (this one) deals with a mission into the wastes and the return, up to when the Despair’s Demise reaches Fort Ard.

Also- One of the bounties you get in New Yeirshee is for a goblin called Zipzoop! I wondered where I heard it before- such a good name for a gobbo steamsteed rider!

Cheers!

So this game is like both Mad Max and Warhammer 20K combined into this CoG Game?

Well, I am not directly lifting any lore but the inspirations are apparent. Wasteland road warriors are found in Mad Max. Huge, mobile war-cities are seen in Mortal Engines. I would say you could find bits of Dune in here too.

Not sure about Warhammer 20k- This is more of a fantastical steampunk 19th century, with revolution and industrialisation, inspired by the general vibes of Warhammer and Tolkien.

BUT it is mostly an extension of An Unexpectedly Green Journey, in its own established world. I hope people find that this game and story are its own unique-ish thing.

Really, I want to make a world where I can indulge my imagination, taking ideas from all over the place but be free to do what I want with them. I am only glad that some people enjoy the ride.

My proposed large game after this will be set in the far future and be of galactic proportions. I love the idea of creating a whole arc of history with three mainline games. It is an epic ambition but one I really, really, really want to come together. And, if nothing else, be interesting and fun!

EDIT: There will be a brief pause in development as I have been sent the copyedited and reviewed files for An Unexpectedly Green Journey. Without the wonders of cogs and coils, I have to set up the templates for the printing press to get the game ready for production.

Won’t be too long, I hope.

The same thing happened to me too.

@BelmontShepard

Hi Belmont,

Can you confirm exactly where this is?

Is in in New Yeirshee, with the snake people? In which case it is not yet available on this forum but only on Patreon for the next few weeks.

Or is it on the crawler mission, when you leave the Despair’s Demise and head out into the ash lands? In this case it is a bug and I will fix it tomorrow before working on An Unexpectedly Green Journey (bit late to do it right now as need to get some sleep).

Thanks for playing. We’ll get this sorted out.

Oh okay I misunderstood. Yes it’s with the snake people.

UPDATE 3 (128K, 378k total- 15th September 2024)

The update is a large one. This is primarily due to the vehicle-fighting system, which took a lot of code and repeated text to implement. It varies depending on whether you are fighting a fast, medium or heavy vehicle, in a steamsteed, dray or carrier ram. There is also an option to fight as a carrier gunner.

This is the bulk of it. This system can also be used during other sections of the game but here it serves the purpose of pitting your pirate ash-road warrior against local bounties, to gain respect with the Foreign Quarter bandits in New Yeirshee.

The rest of the update is for folks who escaped the crawler and headed south to New Yeirshee. Along with joining the pirates, there is another option for chancermancers to learn powerful magic, summoning something far more epic than mere boggarts.

Click the link and enjoy! Please let me know if you find any bugs and typos!

WARNING- This will break old saves due to lots of variable changes.
