Writing it continues to be fun, but I am dragging along slowly because so many scenes have variant paths (are you a man or a woman pretending to be man? Would your romantic interest be same-sex or opposite sex, or either? (Or would you rather not bother with the smoochy stuff?) Sorry to not have posted an update in a while

I have no idea what the fuck cribbage is and had to resort to entering random numbers just to get past the game in the beginning. Real fun stuff that.
Edit to better explain. It says we’re supposed to amass points in our hand, but doesn’t explain what is worth however many points. What are aces worth? What are face cards worth? What card combos are valid and how much is each worth? Etc. As someone whose never heard of this game in my life, the in game explanation is deeply lacking.
I remember reading this and being like do I need to call an older relative to explain cribbage to me to play this WIP.

Hi: There is a link to the rules of cribbage in the game, before you start to play. It is also available on the Stats page. I was planning to make the rules available only at the point when you need them, but that is overly retentive. I will update the stats page so the rules of each game are available from the moment you start to play
There is a note at the very start of the game about checking the Stats page for stuff like the rules for the various games that crop up within this game. There is an option to check the rules of each game before you start to play it. At the moment, only the rules for cribbage and cottabus are available, but I will be providing the rules for faro, bunko, and stook, those great 19th-century games, within a couple of days.

Can MC avoid the awkward situation where they are force to dress as a lady with the superior ranked soldier when acting in the theater? It was very awkward, last I read it was unavoidable.
This sounds like a really engaging historical adventure. I love the idea of playing a British officer in 1800s Canada with choices, romance, and heroism all mixed together. Looking forward to trying the demo and seeing how the story develops.
Hi. There is a setting early in the game if the player does not want to deal with romancey stuff; but no matter whether the MC is male or female pretending to be male, they have to take on the role of Lady Fidget in the play. In those days women almost never appeared on stage in North America, and men taking the female parts was normal and expected.

One upside about being away from the forum for several years is that I get to come back and enjoy catching up on this WIP. I see there’s been some major work done and additions made — I enjoyed my side adventure sneaking up on some French saboteurs at the Citadel. I’m still crap at cards, and the game defeated my attempts at cheating by randomly handing me different cards each playthrough, which is impressive from a technical point of view. As always, I found the characters engaging, fleshed-out and fun to be around.
Now for assorted nitpickery:
- Couple of places where the bolded text doesn’t have a new line begin after it, not sure if intentional.
- Sentence ending in 2 periods:

Thank you for your kind words! I have new scenes almost ready to post. My main obstacle is one most of us face: not enough time to do what we want to do because of all we must do.
I have corrected the technical issues you have run into and will update the demo later today with the revised files.

Just dropping a comment so I don’t miss any updates! The writing style is gorgeous, I’m looking forward to seeing where this story is going. I was wondering how any romance would be incorporated as a female and was surprised by the moment with the Captain. I also really enjoyed the moments with Samson and the lady of the house. I find the card game hard but I liked that I couldn’t cheat it, even if I couldn’t figure out how to figure out the points. I can’t wait to see what you write next!

Thank you for the kind words. There are a lot of adventures between now and how the story winds up (unless the MC ends up dead through unfortunate choices, hehe). There should be plenty of romance chances whether you play as male or as a female disguised as a man, but also plenty of missed chances and frustration, too (and the option to skip all that kissy-kissy stuff if the player finds that a distraction).
As to cribbage, if you select the stats page, there is an option to review the rules of cribbage, including how to count the points in a hand. As each additional game (faro! bunco!!) shows up, its rules will become available, too.
Real life permitting, I am hoping to put some time into the game each day until the next segment (horse race, boat race, gambling den…) is ready for upload.

Something about the rules and my comprehension was not gelling, but I do struggle to keep numbers straight in my head so it may be a personal issue not your writing!

Am I bad for using a cribbage translator? Yes, I’m a sore loser/j, but on a real note, I loveeeee this story; playing it as a gay man and having it be so realistic is honestly beautiful work. This has to be one of my favourites and 100% the best in my history reads. Immersive and realistic set, theme, romances and writing—truly chef’s kiss. The only issue is the length; it breaks my heart every time it ends and sends it jumping every time it updates. Massive, massive, massive props to you for this masterpiece. I’m shocked it’s not as famous; it certainly deserves to be. Cannot wait for more! Wish you the very best; hope all is well, and lots of love from me <3
