You can now choose Helvetica or OpenDyslexic font in our games

We’re going to begin gradually rolling out a feature where players can choose the font in our games.

We’re doing a phased rollout

Phase 1: Choose a font in Heart’s Choice and Hosted Games on the web

For example, you can go to https://www.choiceofgames.com/user-contributed/zombie-exodus-safe-haven/, click Menu and Change Settings. There, you’ll see two new options:

  • Use a sans-serif font. This will display the game in Helvetica (or Arial, if your computer doesn’t have Helvetica installed for some reason).

  • Use a dyslexia-friendly font. This will display the game in the OpenDyslexic font, designed against some common symptoms of dyslexia. It takes a while to load, and if there’s an error loading it (or if it just takes a few seconds) we’ll show the game in the Comic Sans font as a fallback. (Some dyslexic readers find Comic Sans to be helpful, too.)

  • Use a serif font. If you pick one of the fonts above, you’ll see an option to switch back to the default font, with serifs. It varies by platform (and what fonts you have installed), but it will prefer to display the game in Palatino, then Cambria, then Georgia, then Times New Roman.

Phase 2: Add a font menu in our “Heart’s Choice” app and our omnibus “Hosted Games” app for iOS

As of Jan 5, we’ve rolled out new versions of our apps to support selecting a font on the Settings tab, in Hosted Games version 3.1.0 and Heart’s Choice version 4.1.0 for iOS.

Phase 3: Choose a font in official Choice of Games games on the web

We delayed rolling out to Choice of Games to make sure we don’t mess up anything with our end-of-year game releases, but on Jan 5, we released the new font menu on all games on choiceofgames.com.

Phase 4: Add a font menu to our omnibus “Choice of Games” iOS app

Once the web games are updated, the omnibus app will follow.

Phase 5: Update all of our standalone apps to add the new font menu

This will take some time, as we push out new releases for all of our games on Steam, and standalone apps for Android and iOS.

Phase 6: Release new versions of our omnibus apps for Android

We’ve been working on the new version of our iOS app for months, and the new code is also designed to work on Android. Support for selecting fonts in the new app will arrive in 2026.

We can’t predict when this will be supported on other platforms we don’t own

Cogdemos.ink and the ChoiceScript IDE (CSIDE) are managed on a volunteer basis by their respective owners, not by us. The new font menu is available on Github, so work can begin whenever they’re available. https://github.com/dfabulich/choicescript

Authors can’t choose your font; players do

From time to time, authors have asked us to give them control over the font used in their games, either for the entire game or for individual sections of their game.

We’ve decided to keep the choice of font in the user’s control.

(You can still use a custom font for headers by including your font in an *image. If your image is black text on a transparent background, you should use a *text_image, so users in dark mode will see your text in white on a dark background.)

Phases 2 and 3 are complete. You can now use the font menu on games played on our choiceofgames.com web site, and in in our “Heart’s Choice” app (version 4.1.0) and our omnibus “Hosted Games” app (version 3.1.0) for iOS.

I’ve just submitted the “Choice of Games” omnibus app (version 5.1.0) to Apple now; I expect Phase 4 will be complete in a day or two.

I’m beginning the gradual process of updating all of our standalone apps today, as Phase 5. They’ll trickle in over the next week or so.

The updated omnibus apps for Android (Phase 6) are still months out, but it’s getting closer. (I made a lot of good progress on this in December.)

Phase 5 went faster than I’d expected! I’m still hard at work on Phase 6.
