The thing that I’m most confused about all of this is frankly why any of this is surprising or how they didn’t see it coming. Cultivator-Anon wanted to use the same tripcode on 4chan as his username here, he wanted to actively call CoG users f*ggots in the lolcow threads he made there, he wanted to mock the mods of the place for being “woke”, he wanted to mock every single person who wanted him to include gay romance in his books and he wanted to do all of this openly as himself but he also didn’t want to be held accountable for it. He then wanted to have a discord full of anime obsessed twelve year olds spouting slurs like they’re the first caveman to discover the “hit him over the head with a rock” joke and they wanted to do this all on the official Aura Clash server as a way of like, flagrantly spiting the rest of the forum. They wanted to do all of this out in the open with no shame because it was funny to spite the rest of them and show how big their game had grown despite the “haters” and they wanted to do all of this as if it wasn’t going to garner a response.
Like, seriously grow up. You can troll and mess around if you want but at least have the stones or acknowledge when you’ve been had, wasn’t that the intention? Are you seriously going to cry now that the shit you were clearly doing to make fun of people to their face actually got a response?
I’m also really baffled at all the chatter that this is just the writer getting punished for his discord, he was himself an immature bigot who was as much of a contributor to the toxicity that got him banned as anyone else, more, even. Mind you this is the same man who coded it into his game to make it damn near impossible to even mod in gay romance. Like… why? Why would you put the effort in to do that? I mean I know why, he called people requesting gay romance in his book the f-slur repeatedly in his 4chan threads. Even so, there’s so much deliberate effort being put into that for something that wouldn’t even impact the game on its own that you’re left wondering what sort of person would even think to do that in the first place.
This is all without mentioning his constant history of posting dogwhistles or outright racism and homophobia here, on the chan threads, and in his discord. Yeah, screw him, there is nothing lost by his absence. If he’s really a family man he should spend about 99% less time online gleefully laughing about holocaust jokes with a legion of anime obsessed twelve year olds fawning over his story about large breasted obsessed women forming a harem around mister power man 3000. Seriously you all need to grow up.

In all seriousness it’s very easy to control what you see and say online. It would have been very easy to not share nazi memes and an adult should know better.
I was unaware that having a family excludes you from being a bad person, I will need to re-educate myself now.
If your community that you created, fostered, and interact with is full of Nazi’s, you clearly are at least comfortable with them or their views. Especially if you are allowing people to be hateful in something that you are moderating yourself, where your job as a moderator is to enforce the standards that you want in your community, or have people to do it for you if you dont want to be personally involved.

Even if you discount all the (good, valid) moral reasons for making a move like this, it still makes good business sense IMO.
CoG is very big on inclusivity and egalitarianism and it very much markets itself along those lines, and association with racist and bigoted communities is antithetical to that. It tells people “Hey, we’re not that serious about this, our branding is just rainbow capitalism, we’ll tolerate bigotry if your game is popular enough” and that is toxic for your branding over the long term.

I very rarely comment here, but lurk a lot, so all I’ll say is that I’ve NEVER met a person in real that “just likes to banter [using slurs]” that isn’t an absolute raging asshole, and, who upon inquiring or digging their brains, doesn’t hold terrible views against X, Y, and/or Z minority or group of people. That is all!
I have been following this thread since about ten minutes after the initial post, and it has been heartbreaking and sickening to see some of the cruel and hateful rhetoric being thrown around. I care deeply about this community, and there are people here I honestly expected better from. I’m not even one of the mods, or one of the people singled out and targeted, and I’m exhausted, so I can only imagine what @Bryce_Kaldwin and some of the other participants here must be feeling. I don’t know how to say this without sounding like an even smarmier dork than usual, but I would like to thank everyone here who has done their part to keep the peace and/or to stand up for what this community is about.
All this talk about whether someone or other is really a Nazi or just an edgelord is beside the point. What matters is what he brings to this space. What he or his friends bring to this forum becomes our business. If people from this forum, in their official capacity as CoG staff or moderators, were going into someone else’s space and telling them what to do, that would be overstepping, whether that space was a fan Discord, a papal conclave, or KiwiFarms. And there are things that wouldn’t and shouldn’t be allowed in this forum that (unlike Nazi rhetoric) would be perfectly fine in other contexts, and forbidding those things isn’t overstepping, it’s the people in charge of this community exercising their right to make it the kind of place they want it to be. “Be a bigot if you must, but keep it the fuck away from our space” is hardly the heavy-handed policy some people are making it out to be.

This thread should be locked, in my opinion. This is CoG’s site, the ban can stand regardless of how anyone feels.
Furthermore, even if the ban itself was arguably an overreach, the site and company still have a right to decide who they let be a member of said site.
And no one here can reasonably argue that this ban was a truly debatable one, given the site’s established rules and collective sociopolitical views.
Finally, anyone who wants to kick up dust over such a user getting the hammer can cry a river.
Don’t agree with the ban. If they didn’t break a rule here, they shouldn’t be banned here. It’s that simple. The stuff said on discord can be disgusting, 100%. Yet that is there and not your responsibility. It is a discord no one is forced to join.
If they bring an attitude and break rules here, they get banned no matter what, no matter where they come from. COG should be a safe space.
The individual alone is responsible for where they go.
The reasoning for the ban is concerning. You banned someone because you got tired dealing with people going to their discord and coming back to complain or post? You’re a moderator, you have power and responsibility using it, you’re going to deal with people you dislike but if they don’t break your rules they should be safe here like anyone else. Banning someone for not breaking a rule damages trust.
A moderator should be someone we respect, who can remain fair even when things aren’t to their personal liking, who can be responsible. This decision is not that.
More alarming, mods now plan to punish users here for what happens offsite? So if an author is busy, doesn’t monitor their discord for a bit, some bad actors can get them banned here by misbehaving there and sending it in?
It’s a terrible idea and the direction this is heading is worrying.

I appreciate this being stated in no uncertain terms. This is exactly how I feel, and seeing how people who disagree with the actions of the mods here have been participating in this thread has been illuminating and a bit disappointing (if not entirely surprising).
I am astonished by the fact that there are still people acting like moderators have nothing better to do and are just waiting eagerly to ban you if one person uses a slur in a discord server related to your game. They have repeated many times that this happened not because of a few people being unruly on discord or here a few times but because it’s been an ongoing problem for a year now and the author refused to do anything about it even though he had every chance to do so. Mods, I admire your patience.

I think you’re misunderstanding? From what I’ve been seeing. Those people from his community were coming to this forum and bringing that hate and stuff with them to other threads here. If my eyeballs and reading comprehension have been working today anyways. Which from the sounds of it has also been going on for what? A year?
Yeah, at some point you have to stop giving chances and just kinda nip that in the bud if you can. Especially if you asked them multiple times over the year to get it in order and get their community in line if they want to come here. I don’t really see a problem with their reasoning. Fun fact: before this mess, Anon had 416-418 subscribers on Patreon, and now he has 421 subscribers He hasn’t lost any subscribers and even gained some, He’ll probably continue the story elsewhere what a crazy world. And I respect people who don’t want to hear about Aura Clash anymore because it will leave a bad taste in their mouths. But when that J.K. Rowling scandal broke years ago, I didn’t stop loving Harry Potter. Separate the art from the artist people, again I understand those who don’t want to do that. Anon has shown himself to be a person of questionable character at best and deserves much of the hate he’s receiving, but I’ll continue following the story if he chooses to continue.
