@BrandonH The school section will be wrapped up by the end of chapter 2, and I have a seq planned and outlined. This installment will yield 50k-60k words per play through.
@Yaya1213 Thanks for the feedback! I posted this update due to the massive amount of coding involved in this chapter. As I’m sure you can tell, I have an unusually high amount variables/story paths to account for. I wanted some feedback on this section before I got to far into coding the remainder of this chapter. I would not want to waste time on something unappealing, or confusing.
@stsword and @Taylor_Enean What I gather from your comments is that the course selection instructions are unclear, and that you would prefer that the courses no longer be selectable once added to the schedule. I will make this correction, however, I have an additional question. I currently have it set so that you can review the course details even after adding said course to your schedule. My reasoning behind this, was to accommodate those who wish to make comparisons between courses as they continue through the selection. I realize there are more ways to accomplish this, but my question is whether you feel that this is a beneficial feature, or that it is unnecessary?
I’m not the one to ask, I checked all the descriptions first, and then started choosing.
So a better question is- Did any of you folks need to refresh their memory on the courses you chose previously?
I did not.
If I remember correctly, you have the option to reselect the courses if you’re displeased with your decisions for whatever reason. Therefore, the reader can always come back to see the descriptions of all courses, should they wish to do so. But that would be less convenient than being able to see the explanations while still determining which of the other courses you wish to take.
@Blmc000
I think that it is useful for the sake of immersion if anything else. Do the different courses have their own ways of increasing your abilities in the particular field or are all they all the same in the sense that, for instance, all the Focus subjects increase your Focus and that is it? If it were the latter, then the descriptions altogether seem unnecessary but as I said, they can perhaps help the reader to engage better in the story…
If the others believe that different courses should disappear after you chose them, I suggest adding course descriptions to the “Show Stats” menu instead…
@stsword Thank you for your feedback and response @Creator The different courses certainly effect the progress of your abilities, but their primary function is to govern which skills you will be able to learn, and how you will respond to various situations later in the story. I would elaborate on this, however, there would be many spoilers involved. Suffice it to say, the course selection is vital to to your progress, and should not be dismissed. Perhaps some find that I did not make the course selection’s bearing on the MC’s development clear. Thank you, as always, for your insights.
Well okay.
The physical courses are sufficiently different, I wouldn’t expect pain management and aerobics to do the same thing.
The mental classes, well I only did it the biokinetic, I would expect biophysics to unlock different abilities than microbiology.
The focus classes though, they all sound like they do the same thing in a different way. So if which focus classes is supposed to be different, I’d suggest changing the descriptions to make that a bit more clear.
Because I have no clue what taking meditation instead of mental clarity is supposed to change.
Oh and it would have been nice to know we were forced to take three of every class type. I tried to do something different because I figured a shapeshifting speedster with durability would benefit from a different approach.
Great point. I will include this in the instructions.
The key differences are in fact in the “how” and not the “what”. Each course will result in a different effect. I will attempt to emphasize this in the descriptions.
Excellent observations! I appreciate your advice, very much. Additionally, as per your previous suggestion, I will add a course countdown to the main page of the loop.
Even when we choose a childhood past where our parents were not involved, we still are able to say goodbye to them before the matriculation process.
That was meant to be an internalized farewell, however, I will hide this option for those paths. I can see how this may be confusing. Thanks for pointing it out!
I have updated the demo with the recent suggestions. As always, any and all feedback is appreciated.
Chapter 1 seems fine enough, or at least, there’s nothing too outstanding.
For chapter 2, might want to start each new dialogue on a new paragraph.
And now… The classes!
Maybe have each of the class types separate, like, have the reader choose the research first, then allow focus to be chosen, then lastly physique. This breaks everything up into more manageable components.
Inform the reader that they can view more info by clicking on a class.
Make the "yes, choose this class "disable reuse ", and maybe add a copy of the schedule to the main class selection page, too.
Thanks for the feedback!
Great suggestion. I have updated the demo with this addition.
This should already be the case. If not, which courses were you able to select multiple times? You should only be able to re-select courses if you choose “I wish to change my selected courses.” This will reset everything, and allow you to set a new schedule.
Another Great suggestion! I have also updated the demo with this addition.
My intention with this section is to allow the reader to go back and forth between class types to make comparisons, and to think about how these courses may interact with one another, so that they can make a more informed decision. Perhaps I have failed once again, to emphasize the impact that these courses will have on how the rest of the game unfolds. I will re-think the introductory portion. I shortened this portion because I have been informed on several occasions, that the “exposition” segments of my game are a bit tedious. It seems as though this particular case requires a bit more. Thanks for the suggestions, I appreciate you taking the time to help.
Don’t worry, my feedback was mostly based on feedback from the rest! Making suggestion based on what others have given.
But the most important imo would be the dialogue one, since it affects readability, the others are more of… Quality of life suggestions, you could say.
And it’s good to know what was going through your mind when you made the sections. So we can maybe provide feedback that fit it.
And oops, I assumed the same classes could be chosen again, my bad!
And keep being innovative, I’m sure with the forum’s help, you can think of a way to make this good without losing track of your original intention.
I’ll have the dialogue adjusted on the next update. Thanks again for the feedback!
The new update really good keep the good work up
Thanks! I appreciate the feedback
The demo has been updated as of 06/8/18.
Initially, I planned to wrap up the school segment in chapter two, but upon further consideration, I have decided to split this between chapters two and three. This update introduces the MC to the core ROs. Once again, all feedback is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!
Awesome drawing!! Is that a lightsaber?
It is a similar concept. The functionality, and availability of bladed weapons will vary based on the individual power sets. This particular image was drawn with a speed/agility/strength type in mind.
I love the new update but one part confuses me. Why is Quinn treating us like a total stranger in our room but when we are first introduced to them they act like we have been best friends for a long time?
