Weeping Gods (WIP, 06/JUN/2025) (686K)

Made an account to comment on how much I love the game
Thank you a lot for writing it!
I really liked playing as a guard captain, it reminded me a bit of Pratchett’s books that I love) Also the option to play older character and have older ROs made me happy
Now I will go and play all other origins)

Loving the romance with the cranky spymaster. You’re going to admit you have feelings, damnit.

Hmm have you tried getting the ‘Common sense is not that common’ achievement? :eyes: That one is for the noble.

You see, I’m not sure either. I forget many things I write. Thank you, adhd. I think I intended having both Narmer and Ahmose have some comments if you try to flirt with both, but they didn’t make the cut. Yet. I may add them later during the future edits.

They are both heirs, except male Ahmose is first in line, and female Ahmose is third. At the moment. But this can change, and they both have to be ready for it. Narmer wouldn’t let his daughter slack off just because she’s a girl :))

You can ask away :)) Unfortunately, none of of those cities exist anymore. Thebes was buried under current Luxor, and Memphis has simply disappeared. It used to be a bit south of where modern Cairo is now. The descriptions in the game are mostly fictional, although I tried to go off by historical descriptions, and my own added theories. So for example Memphis feels so modern because it has been neglected during Hyksos reign, and heavily damaged during the war, so Narmer had to rebuild a large part of it. This didn’t happen in Thebes because the war didn’t reach that far south.

The personality stats are very unbalanced at the moment. They won’t affect anything just yet, so you don’t have to worry about them, but please keep an eye on them in the later chapters because this is definitely something I will need feedback on!

Petmes discussed this with Zaia in Abydos in Ch3, although I can see how it can be a little confusing considering Petmes’s outlandish explanations  The magic is not running out, it’s the ability to cast magic that’s going to disappear if the crystals don’t get returned. The magic will always be there, but it will slowly become inaccessible. Petmes can’t keep the crystals running forever and the fact that they got stolen is bad enough so that he doesn’t want to risk it again. He just decided to slowly take them out of commission once you return them.

You don’t know how great it is to hear this :face_holding_back_tears: I like Terry Pratchett’s style too, and his sense of humor, although I never read him in English. I probably should… I think the MC has a similar sense of humor, which someone either likes or they really don’t.

Hahahaha I can imagine the MC thinking the exact same on Qenna’s path, internally seething and gritting their teeth, while Qenna just decides to go selectively blind and even more deaf than they already are, whenever MC tries to get closer.

Keep it up. Those walls will come down. Eventually.

I didn’t get that achievement in my first run! I’ll have to see if I can figure out how to get it based on the achievement description, hmmmm :eyes:

Haha, I know that feeling well. Would definitely enjoy seeing those comments if you’re able to add them!

Yes, I meant she’s not first in line. But I like that she’s putting the effort into it. She’s a very interesting character bc she’s in some way similar to her father while also having her own views on things. I read through some of your tumblr posts on the ROs — I like that Ahmose is both a royal heir with all that comes with it but also a young person with all that comes with that too.

Studious heirs who also have a bit of fun are my favorite. Ahmose is especially a riot if your MC picks the shy romance options — I was surprised but intrigued by how differently Ahmose responded to shy vs bold options.

Yeah, I remember going to see the ruins of Memphis outside of Cairo and I remember seeing like… 3 columns in a little archaeological site. It’s wild how little is left. Luxor at least had Karnak left to be restored….

Thanks for the explanation of the rebuilding! I did a quick dive into Egyptian history before traveling there but only managed to get to the Middle Kingdom. So I’m familiar with the rise of Thebes and have general knowledge about how it later continued to be a capital in the New Kingdom before Amarna, but I don’t know the details of the Hyksos business.

So Memphis had to largely be rebuilt by Narmer. Does that also explain the differences between the palaces? I got the vibe the palace is grander in Memphis — I noticed with amusement the thief MC was almost disappointed that the Thebes palace was like a normal aristocratic house than the vision of opulence they imagined. Or is that just reflecting history — I know for other places in other periods, the ruler’s residences resembled that of their aristocratic subjects (Rome under Augustus, Japan in the Nara and Heian periods etc).

Thanks for answering the questions!

You probably won’t figure out based on the description  But here is a big hint: you need to catch the curse from the high priest early on, and then your MC has to end up in the palace library in Ch1.

The Hyksos occupation took place at the end of the Middle Kingdom of Egypt, and it lasted throughout the Second Intermediate Period. They were defeated after long years of war by the kings of the late 17th and early 18th dynasties of Thebes and the re-unification of Egypt was the beginning of the New Kingdom era.

The Hyksos-controlled area was from Kusai (you can see on the map in the game where it is) up to the Mediterranean, so they controlled the Nile Delta and Lower Egypt entirely. Their capital was Avaris, and during those years, Memphis has been largely neglected.

In the game, there was barely any palace left there before Narmer took over. He basically had to build one up nearly from scratch because the old one was just in ruins. The palace in Thebes is much older and in good shape because the previous Theban dynasty lived there. It has an ‘old-fashioned style’, relatively speaking, for the characters in the game. The Memphis palace is bigger and more roomy, but it has more of a down-to-earth style because that’s what Narmer prefers.

The looks are reflecting history, yes  Royal palaces in Egypt were not build to last for centuries. Those big stone buildings, obelisks, and pylons that we see in temples were reserved for the gods only because they thought the gods lived in there. Their own houses and even the royal palace was not made for gods, so it wasn’t as grand. Palaces were big because they had to house many people, and it wasn’t just a residential building, it was also a center of administration. They were decorated and were probably very luxurious, but they were built from the same normal clay bricks, and wood, and occasional stone, like the houses of aristocrats.

This is so cool so far. I love it. I did find one typo?

When talking to zaia in the garden
“Thank you for answering my question” is repeated

Thanks! I apparently can’t do basic math in the code. Embarrassing.

NEW UPDATE WITH CHAPTER 5

First of all…

THE SAVES WILL BREAK! There is no workaround. The saves will break.

Second, READ THE CONTENT WARNINGS AGAIN. This is important. Some heavy stuff will be present in this chapter.

The update is 158 000 extra words. The chapter is playable to the end, but it’s still a work in progress. There will be missing choices towards the middle and end, which will be added later.

Right now though, I’m going on a vacation, so I will be much slower to answer until I get back at the end of June.

Patreon supporters already got to read this, but there won’t be game updates on patreon either until I come back, so soonest at the end of June

Enjoy, and I hope you all will have a great time reading!

i literally dropped everything in my schedule to immediately play this new chapter! the cliffhanger at the end is evil but the chapter was so good. all the routes were incredible (still can’t choose a fave RO… Tabiry and Narmer are so sweet, Ahmose is so silly, Zaia is so intriguing… and Qenna just makes me want to shake them affectionately..)
thank you so much for the update! i think this might be my favourite IF ever <3

Thank you for the update! Still playing it but thought of letting you know now cause ik I’ll forget later. This is from when the group returns to memphis. Zaia isn’t supposed to be present here yet. Also i think the word us supposed to be “preparations”, not reparations.

No, reparations is right. They’re talking about the last war, not a next war. Basically they’re complaining that after the last war was over, they feel they didn’t get enough compensation.

While I love the story and the different backgrounds that we could make for our PCs, but I kinda wish we could do more about the stats as we could only focus on one particular stat in order to succeed in several stat checks. I think making extra unique choices where the PCs has some points in like magic and perception could mean a lower threshold to succeed, but the players could play around with the stats to fit their preference.

I like this one so much! It’s very heavy with words, but that’d never be a problem for me. It’d be a lie if I said that I didn’t enjoy this, and that’s true, I LOVE this game!

I also agreed with the person above saying about the stats can be more useful or something, but not like I mind or anything. Still love these stuff.

Anyways small problem me think

I’m not sure about the others, but for this one, you have to play the captain background, and catch the theif (you can let her go or take her in) then leave the necklace in evidence storage. Then when Zaia asks if you want revenge, ask what they have in mind.

not 100% sure of this but i think both of these appear in the first chapter of a thief playthrough. for the first one you have to be able to escape the prison and run away from qenna and zaia for as long as possible, while for the second one i’m guessing you have to be caught pretty easily
