Is there any type of cursus honorum set up or is it similar to the Athens democracy?
Happy birthday!
(20characterlimitblablabla).
Thanks to the various well-wishers
I had a good day, so yay.
This is just something I will need to do more research on. The Middle East would also be an interesting area to look at. If you have any suggestions for where I might go looking, feel free to shout out
Closer to the former, but there isn’t really a standard order of offices for a career. They also don’t have term limits, though recalls are possible, or leaving a post to accept a higher one, or just retiring.
As far as the highest level of government, there are the two assemblies; a lot of prominent people don’t have a title other than assemblyman or assemblywoman. They also appoint governors. The seven highest titles are as follows (note that gender may vary, but I am giving the most common gender for each post):
High Lord of Lords and Ladies: Highest official of all, he presides over the rest, directs the government, general coordination and executive type stuff. Also tends to have the most sway over decrees.
Lord Minister: He handles a lot of administrative and diplomatic duties, often involving relations between groups within the republic as well as outside. Often serves as second-in-command, and is the most likely to go travelling, while the High Lord sticks in the capital.
Lady Treasurer: She controls the purse-strings. While her power is theoretically limited to the budget, government funding, taxation, all that kind of thing… it turns out that being the ultimate authority on those is kind of a big deal. (However, she does not have power over monopolies and her government resources aren’t always as strong as those of the most powerful families.)
Lady Overseer: Largely in charge of public works. She organizes infrastructure, keeps up the fortresses, checks on agriculture… generally, where Lady Treasurer decides where to spend money, Lady Overseer carries it out.
Lord General: He commands the military. Under the direction of the High Lord. As approved by the Assemblies. Also general patrolling.
Lord Judge: The highest judge in the realm, his main purpose is resolving disputes that can’t be handled at a local level or within a family. This may involve what we’d consider criminal or civil law, but could also entail just patching up a feud (or trying). While it is an elected office, unlike the other six, this office has traditionally been passed down within a single family, one which holds no monopolies nor particularly great wealth, under the tacit agreement that allowing any other family to gain the office would ruin their unbiased reputation.
Lady Seer: Chosen to represent the government and the republic as a whole to spirits and other realms of existence. She also serves to present visions and advice at government functions. Furthermore, she performs all the highest rituals. So, while she doesn’t exert power by force, she bears considerable influence.
Does the Lord General usually have some military experience? For that matter, how common is military experience amongst the assemblymen/women?
that leads to another question how does the army look at this in the system of our cave Greece or maybe something Han China military system? Or is it based on the Old Kingdom / early and mid Republic class system of the army of Rome?
This has varied by time period. Since the conquest of Laghuna, the republic’s only major war was an attempted invasion by the other republic to the east. Lately, military experience has mainly been a matter of patrolling and internal affairs. They would rely a lot on families’ private armies and on mercenaries, but the government does have a right to call on local governments to raise levies. Appointment of commanders largely goes through whoever it was who raised the army in question (local government, family, whatever), but the highest levels get appointed by the Lord General.
A few of the wealthier families devote more energy to the military, and often provide officers; many do not. The current Lord General is from one of these, and rose through the ranks, but hasn’t seen much in the way of action. Most assemblymen have no military experience, but there are plenty who had at least a little, though not necessarily particularly effective experience. (I say assemblymen because the military is male-dominated, though not exclusively.)
The current weakening in military tradition is one of the factors allowing the uprising to get off the ground.
Hopefully this helps address what @Rogar was wondering too
Interesting hmmm the Constitution for this Republic one of these days and it means the defence. , so let’s say my name and character wants to raise the army they have to have the wealth and the means to do it how to keep it standing from how does one rise throw the rank in the system because it seems very levy based.
When was the conquest of Laghuna, what was the justification for the war (if there was any), what was the state of Laghuna before the conquest and how did the republic manage to win the war? I mean, with Laghuna being larger/more populous than the rest of the republic, the republic must have had some advantages back then or Laghuna must have been really impovishered or something.
Basically, you just have to catch the eye of someone higher up. Connections and relatives are often more important than actual qualifications. Lately, in peacetime, there’s been little opportunity for advancement by the lowborn. Once war gets going, they’ll be much keener on promoting the most effective commanders.
Within the monarchist rebellion, on the other hand, it will pretty much all be the personal choice of the king.
Mostly around the 3870s. The main character was born in 3949.
When the steppe-derived empire ruled the whole area of the present republic, they ruled the coast directly, but created a separate political entity to rule the inland, Laghuna, under a series of puppet kings. Although there were already some cultural differences due to geography, and the presence of more steppe peoples in Laghuna, and their languages diverged, the republic still officially argues that the distinction is arbitrary, artificial, and imposed.
So I’ll admit I haven’t worked out all the details of the conquest yet. Laghuna was definitely poorer, however, and although it has more people, they are spread out more thinly. The coastal area is more fertile, and a better crossroads for trade. Powerful families in the coastal areas could also call on inland relatives to side with them. To some extent, the republic was also just lucky with its leadership. Notably, some of the most powerful families at present gained their power as a result of involvement in that conquest.
Any specific reason why their culture is so family-centered?
And the whims of a boy-king are not something my mc is in any way, shape or form willing to gamble on.
To make mara suffer blah balh family members. So damn torture. Like respect your Betters THEY AREN’T BETTERS THE ARE ASSHOLES LIKE BIG SIS … she wants to kill me or sell me to bought herself a better husband… she is probably… Thinking on it …that of sacrifice me
Well, that actually depends on your choice though (sorry, I too sensitive about family matters to igrone)
No problem, lol. I am familiar person myself. One thing is role playing and other real life. Same in video games play shooters doesn’t make you an assassin. Role playing doesn’t make you a monster or a saint if you play goodies. I am talking in character so don’t take my comments face value except in game
A specific reason? No. It’s what fitted together as I was developing the society. The lineages worked as building blocks. But, all in all, it’s not an uncommon way for human societies to function. European derived cultures are a bit on the low end as far as these things go.
It might possibly also be a factor that I’m a bit of a geek for building family trees…
Same here then. since,it easier to make plot and twist with large family tree
Answering in my own thread so as not to derail the tropes thread…
In terms of incorporating that story itself, not so much, since it’s a rather particular plot in a rather different setting. However, theft is something that could make sense for an MC to do and I will consider it in my notes. As for dashing sons, while the male romances whom I’ve currently been thinking about are lower class or in one case foreign, I have been outlining prominent members of the dominant families as well as their immediate relatives, so I’m leaving myself open to the possibility of including a romantic plotline with someone else if they catch someone’s eye

so I’m leaving myself open to the possibility of including a romantic plotline with someone else if they catch someone’s eye
Well I’ve got to meet them first, but generally romances across class-divides have so much more potential for angst and drama and (unintentionally) funny moments, plus in general I tend to like defrosting the ice prince.
Well, I do have a wealthy lady planned, but I realize that’s not to your taste
There’s still some class divides within the lower class people, though in a different way… and the foreign guy I have in mind is roughly on the minor nobility or gentry scale of things, but I think there’d his foreign origin would be cause for rather more drama and humor then class issues. (And he’s about as un-icy as they come.)
I did want to give some of the less privileged characters in the setting the chance to shine as possible loves and friends, as major drivers of the plot. They won’t be the only ones around, though, certainly.
But yeah, there will be high class people you’ll be meeting, so once I present them, we can just see if anyone seems worth writing more.
(You’ll also find that the republic’s current Lord General is gay [or maybe gay-leaning bi], but he’s well too old for the MC.)
Oh, and female characters will be able to marry the king, and anybody will be able to marry some relative of the king, but that’s less romance and more politics.

Depends how far you’re willing to go with the casual hook-ups, but I can see why he wouldn’t work as an li for our mc’s.

Not a problem per-se though they’re usually not as challenging, since our mc is from the same background as them.
Of course for my mc to romance them they have got to be willing to be upwardly mobile, as my mc certainly isn’t planning on staying poor and dressed in rags for the rest of his life.
So characters who are of the opinion that they should not try to rise from their “appointed” status and argue for happiness in slavery are not the types my mc will find desirable.
In other words if an li wants my mc to meekly kowtow to Lords and Kings, well that ain’t gonna happen.
