People complain because it’s not first book of a series. At best there might be a wrap-up DLC. Maybe.
I’m pretty sure it was at minimum, not at best.
That’s the contrary there will be either a DLC or a second book if there is enough story for a second book
Demand, I believe, rather than story.
It’s both – “if there’s enough demand” is primary condition (and how do they even judge that?) but the wrap-up material is ~80k words + some 3-chapters sequence one of the authors would want to write. That’d make the second book either pretty dang small compared to the first (potentially leading to even more complaints) or they’d need to come up with quite a lot more of material for it.
I mean, realistically. The fact that there’s not much of material left for the supposed DLC would suggest the authors didn’t really plan for the story to go very far beyond the dramatic cliffhanger ending point, if at all.
Isn’t that what they said, though? That the sequel, if it comes, will have enough of a wordcount? I’d assume they’d come up with more story.
Right, and i’m sure the sequel to The War for the West will have enough of a wordcount once it eventually comes out as well. But in the meantime, here we are. The unfortunate reality is that coming up with more of the story can be even more difficult than coming up with a story in the first place. It can be also difficult to maintain interest in writing something that’s “mentally done and over” so to speak, i.e. something that was planned to be a standalone release. Thus it’s probably better to simply temper one’s expectations regarding this.
Just pointing out what the authors themselves said about their plans.

I normally don’t post but I will mirror the “negative sentiment” on steam, while I did enjoy idea of the book the problem is the story is unfinished with no resolution for any of the stories and nowhere in the store is stated this was the first book which is a problem many books are having nowadays.
Maybe start to disclose if will be a book series in the store page would be a good solution.
Now for a personal note because recent events the ideia of “What is the chance of this book series being abandoned?” it does create a minefield to buy a book.
I highly doubt it was abondoned.
I’m still going to wait for book 2 before my 2nd run where I avoid ROs.
I prefer series ROs. But not this one.
Those " negative sentiment " will happen if u read more story in here. A lot of story feel unfinish or rush lately. It’s like storys are on the clock.
I actually really enjoy this book. I can only imagine all the hard work into it. But I do agree tho, there needs to be a statement saying it’s only part one of a series speaking of which how many is there going to be? It feels like a trilogy or a four part series at least.
I also enjoy the idea of the book but is just setup with no payoff even for a book one it felt lacking, like we stopped in the second to last chapter of a first book.
I don’t know about having to say how many books will be in the series but making clear that it is a book series( and not false advertise) is a great way to move forward.
While I agree it would be better if all book part of the serie would announce it in the title or the synopsis, I don’t understand why it’s a reproach to this game when some of the most successful book on hosted/choices of games are part of a serie but it’s never mention until the end that it’s the first book of a serie, like fallen hero rebirth, werewolves haven rising,I the forgotten one, sabres of infinity, community college hero, choice of rebel, champion of the gods, samurai of hyuga, breach the archangel job.
I only read Fallen Hero and ITFO from this list, but they both had an internal resolution. In Fallen Hero: Rebirth you did, indeed, got reborn as a villain, made your big debut and kicked your former coworkers’ asses. I went away from the book satisfied and excited for the sequel. In ITFO you (potentially) won a big battle, deposed your brother and made your sister a queen, even though Rade escaped. I went away satisfied and am waiting for the sequel. In both cases we achieved something we set out to do from the start, finished step 1 and are ready for steps 2, 3 and however many there is.
Not in this book though. Here the only thing we learned was given to us cheaply and literally last minute. The villain just waltzed in and told us his plan without us doing anything. It’s frustrating and naturally calls for a major battle and defeat of said villain. But what we get is a cut-off. See? Jarring change of a nice pace, ruination of a great mystery and an engaging plot all for… what? A cliffhanger? It really feels like they published an unfinished file by mistake. A demo. People say there’s barely any content beyond what was in the demo and that’s making me think the authors just didn’t have enough time to finish and said “fk it, submit and say it’s a part 1” at the 11th hour. Extremely disappointing.
I will say it again it WAS NOT A DEMO which just came out with game and is only 2 chapters you played the “beta” meant for playtesters. That’s not meant to be played for free for shits & giggles, that’s for testers to help find bugs, typos, and polish the final version of the game.
Well in part’s you already answered the question a lot of books are doing this and that’s is not a good thing now here we have a book that stopped before any resolution at all.
For lack of better words this feels like the straw that broke the camel back, and to make matters worse one of the examples you gave is abandoned with a steam stove page for it, so people over there are starting to feel buying games is a minefield.
