Strong ROs and weak MC again -_- ugh

I feel like the only one who actually much prefers this dynamic :smiling_face_with_tear:

May I ask for the reasons? It’s really hard for me to understand how anyone could like that.

I feel such MC is worse than others and has to rely on them I hate it.

That’s exactly the reason why I prefer them! I have no desire to do everything myself, or to play as a character who is infallible; if I wanted to play an MC who never needed the help of others, I wouldn’t go to a medium that encourages meaningful interaction between characters. A flawed MC is more relatable, and it forces the cast to rely on one another.

Flawed doesn’t necessarily mean they are more relatable, and a powerless MC is one flaw that I just hate so much. The problem with powerless MCs tend to be that you will rely way more on the other characters than they will on you. They are basically our babysitters.

I agree that flawed doesn’t always mean more relatable, but in a lot of cases it is (at least for me). I’m guilty of pretty much playing a self-insert in every IF game, so when I’m a fairly useless character in some high-powered setting it’s easier for me to relate. I do dislike when you’re just arbitrarily forced to fail, however; there has to be agency even if it’s within the confines of whatever the MC is lacking.

I enjoy both weaker and stronger MCs.

While I can’t speak for anyone else, what I personally like about playing a weaker MC is both the fantasy of having people who seem way out of my character’s league be interested in them/ see something special in them, as well as the experience of having people be protective of them and want to take care of them.
It’s not something I really experience in real life (I’m pretty ‘sturdy’, both looks and personality wise, and more likely to be the one to take a caretaker role in relationships), so it can be fun/interesting/reassuring to experience it through IF.
And that’s even though I greatly prefer playing overpowered MCs, outside of romance.

Mh, I wonder why…

They want to be independent, I suppose. And the more artistic ones have fun designing game page.

Others just don’t like this company and/or think the forum is toxic.

Fully agree. Also, the earnings from the game don’t have to be shared and while some itch IFs are meant to be released completely free, for the ones who will have a price it is a great point to consider.

Personally, I enjoy Twines and HG equally, however I have some grievances (save system and reveue share) that often put me off from buying HG/CoG games.

Also some Twine games are so aesthetically pleasing I might cry (on the other hand some suffer from being unplayable on mobile, which unfortunately is a huge disadvantage obv)

Some are too aesthetic that it interferes with reading. It’s not visual novel, so those things should be secondary though.

Btw. something I’ve noticed recently in new IFs many authors give dark mode and there’s no possibility to change it vjjdjkkpj :triumph: I can’t focus when bright text on black background hurts my eyes.

On this, I disagree. Mostly. Some games ARE indeed difficult to read, perhaps because of color choice, but I don’t see why a text based game shouldn’t also be aesthetically curated. For me, it’s part of the experience.

Obviously I get that CS is simple and polished and easy to read (but then again, that damn inexistent SAVE SYSTEM) but some Twine games… man they feel on another level (example: Wayfarer. But Uroboros is also so so pretty)

I would ask the authors if it would be possible to implement a light theme, and have patience for it. Perhaps the author just needs to understand how to code it. Since I looked into coding with Twine, I have so muc respect for everyone who decides to use it, especially with zero prior knowledge.

There are pros and cons to any IF creation tool and it’s perfectly reasonable to try different ones out - some will make more sense with different projects. Some of the long-form Twines don’t suit me personally because of their layouts/colours or the long chunks of text on each screen that aren’t great on my eyes/concentration, but many others love them so I don’t feel it’s for me to say that Twine was or wasn’t the best choice for that project.

I would say that from an author perspective Twine is a lot harder to debug than ChoiceScript, whose Quicktest and Randomtest are essential for large projects; the node-based interface is also not really suited to very long/complex projects so using tweego may be advisable. Twine is more flexible in terms of appearance, save slots, and other features such as click-replace (which, sidenote, I would adore to see more use of in the long-form games - Uroboros seems to be utilising some Twine features in a way that will hopefully inspire others!).

Regardless, I love seeing more IF in the world and people exploring varied ways of making it. Sometimes people seem to get heated about the subject, or focused on what the “one perfect” IF tool is, but really there’s no ultimate right way to make these games. It’s whatever suits the creator and the project.

Well, there’s no save in released games, but I mostly read WIPs on Dashingdon. It’s much better (especially since I prefer reading on the phone) than stuffed with fancy effects Twine. Of course, there are also IFs that are well designed and aesthetically pleasing (I wouldn’t say that Wayfarer, tho Ouroboros is a pretty good). But let’s be honest, many of them are unintuitive; bad colors, fonts, size, hidden buttons, choice options placed in the text blend with main text etc., etc.

I completely agree. I’ve seen some designs that were really great and out of the box but I’ve seen more with some of the most garish designs I’ve ever seen. I was interested in this one vampire story and got about two pages into it before I stopped because the whole thing was on a black background with an incredibly sloppy red cursive font.

“Aesthetically curated” is fine; the problem is when people make poor color choices in terms of text color/background contrast, or use some funky font that make even a single paragraph of text incredibly fatiguing to read, let alone multiple pages.

I never used choice script or twine before but im interested. I used renpy and unity/naninovel in the past.

Which one would you recommend for a long project with lots of variables?
