It really depends on what you want from the final game - if you want something with a customisable UI then Twine would be suitable (though really if you want a personalised UI for something more complicated, I’d recommend ink with unity). If appearance is less of a priority, and you’re working with complex branching and stats, ChoiceScript may be more suitable. The ChoiceScript ability to debug and balance difficulty are essential for me when I’m making something large that involves complicated skill checks. I would generally recommend ChoiceScript or ink over Twine for something like that, but again it depends on the project and there are plenty of successful large, complicated Twine games out there.

I always recommend trying out making something small with different tools to see if the language feels intuitive and suits what you’re trying to do. I’ve done a bunch of work with Twine, ChoiceScript and ink, and a bit with Ren’py - they all have their advantages and disadvantages.

Thanks for the detailed answer. I think complicated UI’s unnecessary unless its a visual novel or a kinetic novel.
