@poison_mara
Maybe if he was elected president xD
"Finally, something that just irked me. At the end the author asked for no bad reviews to be put on the review page, instead to just send it all to his Facebook as they didn’t want the bad reviews to be public. Not cool at all. The review page is for honest critiques. "
Is it really so much to ask to see an intelligent bad review? This guy is so vengeful that he completely disregarded what I actually said in favor of trying to make me seem pretentious or something. What I actually said was, and I quote,
“For the readers who didn’t enjoy “Trial of the Demon Hunter - book one of Demons Among Men” please don’t leave a review that will hurt my ratings in the application store (1-4 stars); that won’t help me improve anything that you didn’t like, it will actually ensure that I’ll be less equipped to do so. Instead, feel free to inbox my Facebook page or send me an email using the link at the bottom of the page, and tell me what you think I could do to improve my game-book (i.e. if there are any typos, bugs, or continuity errors that come to your attention and need to be fixed.)”
This wasn’t because I didn’t want anyone to see the bad reviews (I have no idea where he got that idea from…) it’s because I want to be able to fix the issues that people are having with my story. That way, they’ll like it more, and my gamebook will be of higher quality. If they just leave vague bad reviews, the story will never improve for them, and my sales and ratings will suffer. It’s not complicated.
Trolls just dont understand like crabbe and Goyle
I think it’d be better to revise that, as the line “don’t leave a review…(1-4 stars)” can be misinterpreted.
Instead maybe consider something like this…
“For the readers who didn’t enjoy the game please don’t just leave a rating but leave a review letting me know what you didn’t like so I can at least try to change it. Telling me that my game is only 1-2 stars but not telling me why you disliked it doesn’t help me improve the game which is something I am committed in doing”
@poison_mara
If I could like your comment, I would
@Nocturnal_Stillness
Yeah I’ll probably edit it for the next update.
EDIT.
How’s this?
“For the readers who didn’t enjoy “Trial of the Demon Hunter - book one of Demons Among Men” please consider waiting to leave a review until after you’ve reported your issues with the story, and allowed time for these problems to be addressed; leaving a review that will hurt my rating (1-4) won’t help me improve anything that you didn’t like, it will actually ensure that I’ll be less equipped to do so. Instead, feel free to inbox my Facebook page or send me an email using the link at the bottom of the page, and tell me what you think I could do to improve my game-book (i.e. if there are any typos, bugs, or continuity errors that come to your attention and need to be fixed.)”
How about this…
“For the readers who didn’t enjoy “Trial of the Demon Hunter - book one of Demons Among Men” please consider leaving a review instead of just a rating. If I know what people dislike, I can work on fixing it. A rating of 1-3 alone just hurts my average rating and doesn’t help me to improve this game and my future work. Also, feel free to inbox my Facebook page or send me an email using the link at the bottom of the page, to tell me about any issues you’ve experienced.)”
@Nocturnal_Stillness
I think my new one’s fine xD thanks for suggesting that I edit it, though.
That’s okay, my point was this line
“leaving a review that will hurt my rating (1-4)” is the bit that can get misinterpreted. getting a 4 isn’t a bad thing, it is more that some people rate badly but don’t leave a reason why.
thank you for considering it anyway
@Nocturnal_Stillness
I don’t mimd fours, as the reader is likely to read the sequels and generally enjoyed the story. But anything but a 5 undoubtedly hurts my rating. I’m not saying that I don’t want people giving anything but a 5, I’m saying I’d prefer that they come to me and try to have their problems fixed before judging too harshly.
I know that, I too prefer it if people who rate low give reasons so I can improve.
I just wish they made it so you have to write a review when you leave a rating, would make things so easier.
@Nocturnal_Stillness
That’s what Amazon does. It would make much more sense, and help us authors out a lot more. Plus, maybe some of the trolls couldn’t be bothered with leaving a written review…xD
On that note, I’d also wish that more people in general would leave ratings. It looks like only 15% of the people who’ve read DH have left reviews, and hardly anyone who likes it rates it, whereas I’m sure 99% of the people who dislike it leave ratings.
Yeah I noticed that too.
Might I suggest simply asking people to leave honest reviews, while also encouraging them to contact you directly? And then adding a note of thanks, letting people know how much you appreciate any feedback etc., might be ideal.
@DavidGil
People who usually leave reviews are likely to leave reviews anyways. However, it’s very rare for anyone to give me feedback directly, which is why I stressed that point. (I’ve recieved about 140 ratings but only 4 emails)
Fair enough, but there’s nothing bad that can be said about you if you were to take my advice. If anything, it’d paint you in a positive light because you’re open to all kinds of feedback.
One final suggestion:
Simply ask, without mentioning reviews, for them to contact you directly. (This is only if you feel you need to leave any note at all)
As soon as you start requesting that people don’t submit a negative review, it starts to paint you in a negative light. And you’ve kind of got to watch how you act and what you say online now that you’re an author.
Sorry if it sounds like I’m preaching as well, but I’m just trying to help you out, as I have before.
And well, I guess there’s nothing more I can say now, other than maybe it’s time to stop looking at reviews. So, I guess I’ll stop posting about it. It’s up to you regarding what you do.
@DavidGil
That’s a good point. I’ll edit the author’s note for my next update.
As for the reviews, I look at them so I can inform bad reviewers of updates.
@DavidGil
How’s this?
“For the readers who didn’t enjoy “Trial of the Demon Hunter - book one of Demons Among Men” please consider reporting any issues you’ve had. If there are any bugs, typos, continuity errors, or you simply have a suggestion, I’d love to hear it; I’m open to all sorts of feedback. You can either contact me on my facebook page or by sending me an email using the link provided at the bottom of the page.”
Much better, yes.
Add your facebook page link as well, if it’s not present already?
Edit: Also, you could just add a quick note saying ‘thanks’. But yeah, it’s much better.
@DavidGil
Thanks for the suggestion I like it better.
It’s in the author’s note and in the credits, which can be accessed at any time.
