Trench - beta testers kindly requested!

If you want to make it possible you just need to add 6 points of fighting in startup or change the stat check in v2. Even just dropping it to fighting > 49 would do the trick. The player would still suffer from low fighting later unless they focused on it.

I also forgot to mention – this beta version has a mystery within the game that ends with a chance to solve it and email me your answer. So there are a couple clues placed within the game that you need to find. If you guess correctly then I’ll put your name in either this game or the next one I write, your choice.* If you come across that stuff and have any thoughts about how well it works I’m all ears.

I’ll change the mystery, of course, if/when the finished version is published.

*offer not applicable for people named “I.P Freely” or “Butt Commander Zero” or the like.

I like this game because it is well made and you can tell there has been a great deal of work put into it

I really like the game! However there is one thing i would reccomend:

Stats page fix up, at the moment it is a bit rough and the stats are not capitalized and it doesn’t show your characters name or rank, which although may not be necessary i think it looks much better.

But other than that it is epic and i extremely loved playing it! ive been waiting for this game (WWI) for so long! Finally, will there be anymore to the book(such as more battles etc.) or is this the end? Either way i immensely enjoyed it and it is my (now) favorite CoG game! Thank you!!

@cheeseman thanks so much.

@Stanlee_Kelly - I’ve modified the stats page. Stats pages and I do not get along very well but I changed it so that it reads the way you suggested. On the story itself, I think most of the changes I’m going to make are to address issues that come up in beta testing. I don’t have plans to add too much more substance – it’s already pretty long – but probably something in October if you get there and perhaps also more about being either a PoW or in the stockade. Those parts are pretty thin.

@distracteddad
I’m a big fan of the Minstermen, purely from going to games while I was at university in nearby Leeds.
Don’t get caught calling people from County Durham or Sunderland Geordie! They’re Mackems! They definitely wouldn’t take kindly to that, big rivalry between Newcastle and Sunderland.
A suggestion of one of two little words you could throw in:
Ha’way = come on. In every sense so good come on or bad.
divvy = idiot
clarty = muddy, useful for WWI
Perhaps call his sweetheart his lass? “Aye, she’s a canny lass” = “Yes, she’s a lovely/nice girl”. Maybe another soldier could say that if he shows them a photograph of her (sorry can’t remember if this happens or not)
Just a few suggestions anyway

Nothing more British than passionately held regional identities (and accents) that change every few hundred yards…

Perfect, @AlexClifford1994, that’s exactly what I need. Thanks!

I’m starting to wonder whether I can’t have a little fun with the whole local difference thing. Maybe have a few guys from different parts talking together and each thinking the other’s a jackass . . . . I already did something like that with the Australian Macquarie from the clerk’s office but then he and I are from the same place.

@distracteddad Sounds good, just don’t use the word jackass, only time I think I’ve ever heard it said by British people is referring to that daft film with shopping trollies and arms being broken. An equivalent word might be ‘twat’, my personal choice of swearword given the satisfaction you get from saying it, although it is a tad stronger than jackass. Something a bit more tame would be ‘git’ or ‘prat’.

@Havenstone I don’t know of anywhere else with so many regional variations, it’s very confusing for foreigners. Only yesterday I had to tell a Slovak that the woman who was speaking to us had a Scottish rather than a German accent and was actually therefore a native English speaker. It was southern Scotland mind, lowland, probably Edinburgh, definitely not Glasgow. But there you go, there’s even many shades of Scottish accent!

Thanks again to everyone who’s given me feedback. I’ve taken the beta down to get back to work on making the changes and adding some improvements. If anyone else has anything they want to say, good or bad, please feel free to do so.

A.

this is pretty cool.

Fantastic work, really enjoyed the beta. I think I was able to find most of the “jobs”, though not sure exactly how many there. Oddly enough, I think the clerk path gave me the most trouble. I didn’t come across any spelling or game errors that I’m aware of. Though one time my character was unaware they were recruiting gunners for planes even though he had just declined the opportunity. A few small ideas: was the use of pigeons in the war mentioned? Is it possible to become a stretcher bearer or sharpshooter in the game?

I also noticed Major/Captain MacAllister kept switching ranks throughout the RFC storyline.

Are you thinking of Capt McAllister’s boss, Major Albert Ball? I’ll try to differentiate them some more.

Getting an error on ipad for the link on the first post, will try it out when I get on my PC.

From hat little comments I’ve read though, this sounds good :slight_smile:

Thanks @AdamGoodtime and @Derpy.

@mrnidhogg, I’ll make that fix. I mention pigeons in one of the tank storylines, since I thought it was pretty cool that these original tanks used carrier pigeons to communicate - kind of a neat combination of ancient and modern technology. (And pity those poor pigeons!) I like the stretcher bearer and sharpshooter ideas and honestly hadn’t really thought of that.

Ah, I never could figure out how to use the tank. The Animaniacs cartoon did a sketch around the messenger pigeons, so I guess that’s why I always associate WW 1 with pigeons. lol

link not working says it’s an error of some kind?

This game is really great. I think it’s one of those few games that pull off the ‘‘every playthrough is different’’ aspect as a choose your own adventure game. I’m a little dissapointed you don’t want to write more because I’m already hooked, but I’m glad to hear about a possible a POW scenario!

Thanks @noogai. It’s not done - I still have to add an entire chapter for October, and probably do a stretcher bearer path and a lot of other revisions throughout.
