The Wayhaven Chronicles: Book One (Discussion) FAQ Located on Post 2

Ahaa, I get it now. Thanks!

I got a variation of the scene, in that case. Because I would call it strikingly similar.
With the catchin’ an all

I think Shakira has like tons and tons of songs that would fit Keiji, sadly most of them are in spanish XD.

i don’t think the combined efforts of what little spanish I have retained from 8th grade elementary school and google translate will do me right there, unfortunately :p. thanks for the suggestion tho~!

What are you, vampires?

Sleep is for the weak

What is this sleep that you speak of?

I go to sleep when the Sun rises because for whatever reason to sun does make me lethargic and sleepy. I am mostly happy when it’s raining / storming / gloomy. And I don’t wake up until after the sun is getting ready to set.

I’m sure as hell Nocturnal. I dunno about being a Vampire though.

Ah, sleep…I used to know the meaning of that word when i was young and naïve…

FAR from an expert, and it’s been a long time since my bio classes, but would it be possible for the infection, such as it is, to insert itself into the bone marrow, thereby reproducing itself during blood production, or into the liver or kidneys and latch during the scrubbing process(es)? (I’m not convinced there’s no production, see below.)

We see it demonstrated that most of their bodies continue to function as per normal, because N says something about being able to eat just fine and there have been comments about them being able to have sex, which are both functions that require a lot of working parts, so if they don’t produce blood at all, that creates something of a conundrum with the idea of ‘naturally born’ vampires like F, who were presumably infants at some point in their lives? I also seem to recall seeing something once about them not really being able to be explained fully by science, despite the agency’s best efforts.

Spoilered that last bit just in case, may have been overzealous.

How interesting! I wonder what is exactly different.

I can’t wait to learn about Echo World and what that is like. I think it will be a real insight into how F is.

Oh sweet years of being young, without having to pay bills, taxes, a house, with my only concern being to rekt in rbg in wow… I wish I could keep doing that :disappointed:

I’m not young though…?

Here it is. If you find any mistake, disagree with anything or something else just let me know because the human body and the way it works is my most favourite topic ever and i’d use any opportunity to discuss about it.

My unecessarily long theory

Now the Detective’s blood makes them imune to pheromones and other mind-altering powers. Since pheromones is the only one of the two we know of, i use them to continue my reasoning.

Now, the book exaggerates the effect of pheromones a lot (pheromones can induce an emotional response or sexual arousal, but not mind control you into doing whatever the other wants) but it’s fiction so it’s understsndable. Now pheromones are detected by us through the nose in the Vomeronasal Organ. This organ has receptors that are as sensitive as M to pheromones in the air. Once the pheromones are detected by this organ they travel through the nose and stimulate the hypothalamus in the cortex of the brain. Of course to do that they have to act like hormones, so they need to bind themselves to their receptor in the Vomeronasal Organ in order to cause a biological response that will take the signal to the hypothalamus. You do this and the victim is yours to toy with.

The problem is, i haven’t been able to find many books that talk about pheromones in detail so how they affect the hypothalamus is something i do not know very clearly. (If anyone does, let me know. My books are too shallow on this subject) I do not know how they do it, but i know how it can be done.

-The binding of the pheromone to the Vomeronasal Organ can cause sensory neurons to pick it up and sent the message to the brain (the hypothalamus in this case) similar to other stimuli.

-The binding of the pheromone to the Vomeronasal Organ can cause a long string of chemical responses that will affect the hypothalamus after it’s gone through a few hormone receptor complexes. (Most likely in my opinion)

Now, to get that from affecting MC they have to have defective, not normal binding sites (but it wouldn’t be a blood thing there so it’s not this one) or hormones that either block the Vomeronasal Organ from picking up the signal or stop the signal from being carried on to the hypothalamus in either step of the way (the latter one would work only in the second case). Both these cases have the same mechanism so i’m explaining only one. (I can send you pictures of how the mechanism goes if it’s not understood very well, but you’ll have to wait until tomorrow for that as it’s midnight here :persevere: )

If, for example, hormone X needs to bind itself to the site Y to activate the site and sent the signal to the hypothalamus, then an inhibitory homone has to stop hormone X from binding to Y. This can be reversible or irreversible. Reversible when the inhibitor hormone binds itself to the site Y, not allowing X to do so and leaving the site Y once they’re no longer needed (leaving site Y unchanged) or the inhibitor hormone can bind itself to another part of the site Y, changing it irreversibly thus making X unable to bind with it once and for all. But hormones (even the inhibitor ones) go to their target through blood.

Now, maybe it’s this unique inhibitor hormone that makes the vampires stronger and the strength leaves as soon as the inhibitor hormone leaves their system. (It could make them stronger by either working as a hormone or a inhibitor hormone that might make the vampire Y site accessible to the vampire X hormone for example that gives a power boost)

The blood transfusion they gave MC could have done anything, but since they argued MC would still be boringly human and not have any special abilities, what if the vampire blood simply caused the MC’s body to produce a lot more of the inhibitor hormone (making it a lot stronger to the supernatural). This could be if other special hormones in the vampire blood could interfere in MC’s genetic material and make the genes responsible for the inhibitor hormone more active)

Also, my personal thought for reversible vs irreversible inhibitor hormon would be the irreversible one because then it’d make sense for M’s super strong pheromones to cause us pain since that could mean X is trying to force itself to an unfitting Y, causing pain (this wouldn’t happen irl, but you can bend the truth a little in fiction).

I hope it’s not too long, but i do believe hormones, pumps and proteins = the reason for everything

What are your opinions on that? Anything you’d like to add?

I also apologize if it’s too confusing. It’s a lot clearer in my head, but this happens when i try to write it down

That could be true, but then how can that change not affect the Detective’s health as a human being? Will the change of blood cells change their function, structure or both? I am very curious to hear your opinions as it is a very interesting theory!

I think the only think I would like to add to this, is the fact that in the books, it seems like physical contact is necessary to make use of the pheromones, so I’m not sure where does this leave us.

We, humans, do “leak” small amounts of steroid hormones through our skin. In a normal situation, the hormones would dilute pretty much instantly on the person we are touching, causing no reaction at all. In the case of the vampires, their pheromones are so strong that physical touch is all that is required for them to get into our system and start working. Perhaps even being instantly into the human blood stream, causing the reaction to pump our dopamine to the sky.

I love your point on the blood transfusion subject (I think probably put that in a spoiler tag, just in case there’s people that hasn’t play it yet). Is such a good assumption to think that the transfusion just made MCs hormones go into much higher level to fight the intrusion. Brilliant.

With this said, I agree with you :D.

@Nara-O let’s not forget that vampires in TWC are not immortal, but they do age even if at an incredibly slow peace. This is a really important point to bring into consideration that I completely forgot about.

Well, Murphy always initiated physical contact when using them, but M’s messed up the detective without the need to touch them so i’m not sure. Maybe Murphy just needed to be closer, maybe there’s another way to get vampire pheromones in through the skin, but the mechanism after they get in will be the same I do not know. Will we ever know? I do not know that either XD

This makes me very happy

Wait, what?! They’re not immortal?! But…but… This just crushed my dreams :sob:

That is an important question / thought~ Well now I got that mental image.

Fancy party is needed in this series~

Yes!

M in fancy clothes makes me giggle the most since it doesn’t seem like something they would be into… but IMAGINE A.

And imagine the RO getting flustered around the MC dressed up all fancy

I am not a biology person so I have no input on that side of the discussion but I have meticulously read parts of Wayhaven (and especially Mason’s patrol scene as i’ve been toying with rewriting it for a fic idea but that’s not really relevant rn) (…i ramble when i’m tired)

what i’m trying to say is that M is touching the MC when they use their pheromones in the patrol scene

I don’t have time to respond to the repeated cursing before ${m_she} grabs my shoulders and presses me back into the doorway of a shop. When I do find my voice I open my mouth, but all that comes out is a yell of pain.

It’s unclear if it’s skin to skin contact (i don’t know if that was a necessity?) but there is touching happening (:smirk::smirk:)
