The Ultimate Magic Student (WIP) (148K) (+14K 02/20)

elysia-hello-chat

Ah! After like a month or smth of not visiting this thread I have really excited for the next update, like I can taste it in my mouth just by thinking about it. (Also damn that’s heavily coded too)

I have a few questions tho:

How do the potions work? Do they heal a percentage of your health (i.e. heals 25% of your health) or do they just heal a certain amount of health (i.e. heals 500 points of your health)

Since we are going for a grid exploration system, is there also chances where we encounter events, items on the ground or treasure chests?

And lastly, how tough is the coding?

The potions work the first way, by healing you based off of a percentage of your max health/mana/stamina. So there’s a potion to recover 25% and another for 50% and so on.

Now for what you can encounter in the dungeons, you will eventually be able to stumble onto treasure rooms, among other types of rooms, however that hasn’t been implemented yet, but he has stated that they are planned. So as of right now there is only walking around and fighting a enemies.

Well from the screenshot it is something I often make using notepad ++ for extensive modding work, I never make COG games but I have extensive modding experience for game like crusader kings II, crusader kings III, Rimworld and the like, Crusader king somewhat closer to COG games since event coding also use decision coding which also involved various stats check, ability check, trait check, gender, age, and the like even goes to attraction preference check the only difference is probably the command word used.

The most crucial part is the attention to detail one wrong typo and it’s broken… Sometimes entirely broken like mistaking { with ( break the code typing ( , ) instead of ( . )the most annoying part is actually testing it in game to see if it works, it also the most time consuming to find out the mistake in thousands line of code, with tired eyes and frustration slowly creeping in one can easily rage quit :joy:.

The coding is the most boring and annoying part of writing the event chain, writing the story, writing the decision, the resolution however is fun.

First of all to get to that point MC need to grind, MC is not OP character, MC just unique because MC have free will, other character while stronger than MC as for now follow character arc from the story.

Probably not because the teachers would step in if the fight got to out of hand

god mode could change that and the tournament is team based so you probably could do that if the person your fighting is tired enough

It would be interesting to solo a team alone lol

that would go crazy

God mode basically non canon since the original story that MC is background trashmob, which need to go through certain character arc to grow to get stronger.

It’s like playing shin megami tensei but with gameshark, which definitely not how developer/author intended.

Beside most of character in game is of good alignment if MC being too evil many will oppose them and since tournament is officially school business this including teacher, government agency, tournament security and who knows what else.

when did I say anything about being evil? and also if the author did not intend for god mode to be there they would not make saying it’s not cannon while the author is implying it makes it sound like your trying to make an argument out of something the author never confirmed

As far as I’m concerned, all difficulties are canon it just depends on what kind of playthrough you want to experience, whether that is playing on the easiest difficulty or the hardest, it’s your MC’s story. Because you play as a character, who while isn’t technically the protag of the overall all story, you to an extent still control the flow of it and some events that happen in it.

Also does it really matter if a certain difficulty is canon or not? It really seems like a small thing to debate over.

It’s not arguing it just discussion to comment about something, if you’re familiar with God mode implementation this will alter the story like for example story in Thousand of us.

The God mode exist but the way it goes the story is different from the rest of the other route the difference is so stark it can be it’s own story.

Did you not play the game? MC is background character, at the end the stats screen is literally lvl 1, the priority objective is not to be killed at the end.

Now explain to me how it make sense to have maximum stats, all talent, maximum level (god mode) with that story?

To make story make sense obviously author need to make special event to fit this God mode narrative, with choice game one change it not always be one change it will also add more down the line, it is multiplicative.

While author do hinting there is God mode it’s not revealed what kind of God mode this is, it could be just max all stats all talent but story just follow regular story arc like other difficulties or God mode is real God mode with own story which even taking strongest opponent skill can’t do much to MC.

You know how sometimes in a story the hero is about to win or has already “won” only for the autor make some random character or background weakling start kicking everyones ass and reveal how disgustingly overpowered they are whether that was planned from the beginning or it was an asspull to keep the story going? We are that character in godmode.

I understand that can happen, there is twist like that, again my statement still stand that this basically new and different story altogether, if you compare it to other mode where MC doesn’t have special privilege such as that.

What I personally consider canon is what author intended before alteration made to accommodate changes because of God mode, like for example in thousand of us I consider all non God mode story arc canon, like the MC doesn’t scare the crap out of their friend, basically still fumbling about making sense of the world and not fighting demigod world destroyer out of the blue.

I mean we haven’t even seen what god mode looks like, it seems a little pointless to say it’s not cannon rn when the story can be altered to make it make more sense.

It’s not about the story can’t be changed it’s because what author originally envisioned is not like that.

If you go further back what author envisioned is game like Persona series losing doesn’t mean it is game over, fail check is just opening another branch of story to MC’s goal, Persona MC is strong and have potential to be extremely powerful but MC does not get that power instantly unlocking it need effort, this means level progression, character development, probably including suffering losses or getting beaten down, if existence of God mode erase all of this or just trivialize it, skipping the steps, etc meaning it’s no longer as author originally envisioned this in my opinion not canon.

It could be implemented as if we were a bug in god mode having absurd statistics lol, I’ve seen some novels with this type of plot

I never said arguing I said debating, there is a difference. Secondly as of now God Mode isn’t something like in the Thousand of Us, where it completely alters events and how they play out and is it’s own story, it’s like any other video game where it only changes the difficulty not the story, I am not positive but I do believe that some interactions will be different but it won’t be anything close to ToU. I will be honest however in that apart from this and ToU I don’t recall seeing other stories having God Mode.

Did you not read my comment? I did say that the MC we play as isn’t the protag of the overall story, meaning we are a background character, but compared to the others we have some semblance of free will so we can slightly alter the events like does the Hero get a harem like he’s supposed to or will we just completely destroy his life?

And to just prove my point I’ll give you a screenshot of the God Mode description from the game itself or at least I would if CoG would let me, but it keeps saying that I can’t embed media items in a post.

Yeah “God Mode” in here is just a difficulty setting like Easy, Normal, Hard, etc. It doesnt make us overpowered, just removed the need to have the right stats to pass checks.

Its essentially Story Mode. Its just the game if your reading a book.

So yes, some scenes would be changed or missed as we would be unable to fail or find it next to impossible. So bad events would be rare with God Mode on.
