The Shadow Society General Discussion Thread (REWRITE IN PROGRESS). Rewrite update on #302

I didn’t know this story beforehand. I bought the gamebook mostly because I saw people reacting so positively to its release. I got to say it was really good, much better than it had any right to be and now I’m hooked and want more. The sequel can’t come fast enough.

There’s one thing I really did not like, though, that we get to the end of the book and we still have no idea—nil, nada, none, zilch!—of why the shadow people need the MC. I get the author wants to keep some suspense, but imho the plot ended up being meager and nonsensical. The thing that hooked me was the characters, and I found myself looking forward to the next chance to interact with R. I hope this is constructive criticism and I wish the author to be carried away on the wind of the muses.

You just addressed and said every single thing that bothered me on TSS.

Haha…you don’t know anything do you? The groups of four are the evil. The shadow man is the lesser evil. Those 4 are causing chaos through out the land. Even so the shadow man let them live being a lesser evil. On the other hand, those 4 wanted to kill him. These resistance group are full evil.

lol

I really enjoyed the game and interactions with characters, but I am totally confused regarding the main plot.

Why MC is here, why should I care about all the politics and how can I side with presented groups, knowing almost nothing about their goals and motivation.

They play some shadowy(haha) schemes and game does not give me an opportunity to unravel what it is, And because of it I feel some hostility towards characters. They are not my friends, they try to use and manipulate me. My MC romanced A and despite me liking the character, I really missed choices allowing me to be torn between suspicion and romantic feelings.

At least these are my impressions of first playthrough. There are few more to do.

Rheylo is adorable :hearts:

I haven’t finished the game yet (am on chapter 6) but couldn’t resist popping by to say that I was completely took by surprise that I’d be so into him, I thought Azuridian would be my dude but nope, Rheylo stole my heart.

Sorry that I haven’t been responsive here the past few days! As @resuri08 already posted, I’m working on a content update for TSS; I do whole-heartedly agree with a lot of the things people have said, and so I’m currently writing more to fix some of the issues that are present in the story. I’m trying to focus on getting it done as soon as possible (while also being thorough), so that’s why I haven’t responded much, but I want to thank everyone for your comments

I finished writing the additional content for chapters 6 and 7 already, though they still need editing and testing. I will, however, update the game with all of the content at once rather than successively, because some of them tie into options happening in later chapters.

For those interested, the content update will:

1. Shed light on the importance of the MC’s family (as well as the MC themselves), and why they have ties to the Shadow world.
2. Explain the motivations for the rebels (in the Hideout) and the Shadowman; why they’re rebelling against him, and his view of them.
3. Give a more detailed explanation about what the shadow creatures are, and why their world is in the current state it’s in.
4. Have more mentions and explanation of the Sunworld-organization.
5. Give more insight on some of the characters thoughts and motivations and explain why the group is keeping things secret from the MC.
6. Give some insight into R’s backstory, and feature them + other characters a lot more in the last chapter.
7. Have some more instances where stats are used (mostly intuition and persuasion).
8. Potentially have another big (or several, but shorter) romance/friendship/rival scene, if it fits.

There might be other things as well, but this is currently what I’ve included/got planned!

To answer some questions here:

@EvilChani Yes, book 1 was intended to build up romance more than complete it. It will be developed and probably featured more in book 2, even if it’s not the main theme of the books. I know some have said it’s initiated a little too fast though, which I can understand, but since I’m also including a friendship-to-lovers romance for the characters in book 2 I aimed to make the one you can start in book 1 more of an instant attraction kind of thing  Sadly, M has no smooch in book 1, but it’s only because they feel too guilty about having lied to the MC to go for something romantic.

@Alicia_kun I’ve seen the first bug and have yet to find it, but I’m going to do my best to squish it  seems like it only appears in certain playthroughs, though. And I’m going to look into the second one too, thank you! I’m really happy you like it  you don’t have to play an evil MC to romance the Shadowman, though!

@UnoriginalUserName Chani is right about that; R has their issues, but book 2 will focus a lot on their development, both as a character and in their relationship with the MC (:

@Samael_Blackblade Yes, if Q or Mdon’t die, they will be featured in the rest of the series and romancable

@Daedalucius First of all, I want to say thank you so much for the detailed review. You really don’t need to be an author or anything to be able to provide great critique, which you prove with this post . You made a lot of excellent points, and I agree with most all of them. Something I’d like to point out though is that there are no big time jumps in the story. It goes from day to day, so when a character is busy, it’d be during a bit of that day and not a week or so. But I still understand your point about the interactions feeling short.

As for the “mentioning of the MC and RO spending time together but not describing the event (or downtime, as you described it)”, that’s something I’ve never been a big fan of myself. If the MC is getting to know a character, I like to include all of their interactions with each other as the relationship grows, not tell the reader it happened without showing the interactions. I totally get why some people do that in their stories, but to me it tends to feel like the relationship stops during these times and only picks up when you get your next detailed scene with them. I guess what I can do is to add more character/MC scenes sprinkled out here and there? I’d love to add more character moments where they speak with the MC more openly, and I’ve already got one of those planned for chapter 13  unless I misunderstood what you meant, in which case - sorry!

And I agree fully on the mystery part. I think I was worried about having too much exposition and too much explained that I missed explaining a lot of things. The pacing is awful in places because I lost some progress on the story when my computer broke down, on top of me feeling really burnt out. It’s not said as an excuse, just an explanation, and I’ve definitely learned my lesson. Hopefully the things I’ve brought up which will be added in the content update will help fix some of it, even if I can’t change the pacing completely without rewriting the whole story.

I did intentionally make it so that the Shadowman might appear as not-so-bad after all though, because I didn’t want the RO’s to seem like the good guy group. I didn’t want the reader to see the Shadowman as evil and the group as good. But it’s true that people might seem more or less bad depending on who is telling you their point of view (people are complex, after all), and this is something I’m trying to show a lot more in the update. I hope it’ll feel more genuine then!

@Kalpana and @Ninja1 There is no such ending; if M survives, they will be held capture by the Shadowman.

@resuri08 Thank you for posting that! I wanted to post it here too, but it completely slipped my mind

@Langre I really love the idea of mixing romance/friendship with options of suspicion, so I will see what I can do with that! I feel like it could add another layer to the relationships. Thank you so much for the suggestion!

@Carawen Wow, you’ve done so much work already…this is overly kind of you to do for the fans of your story! I hope you get the appreciation you deserve for adding so much to your piece after it’s already been released. It’s really cool of you.

Also, I have done all of the romances a few times now, and for me there were 2 ro’s that I couldnt get a smooch from… Is that correct, or am I playing one of the romances wrong? you had mentioned the reason for M above, which I get…but I havent gotten an R smooch ending either…is my MC too bold/flirty? He just gets flustered around me a lot. I think i get close to him them M interrupts at the end… This is another reason G is my #1 dude FOREVAHHHH :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Also, is there a way to find out about the weird shadow on the wall of the bathroom in Shadowman’s place? I have tried to investigate a few different times and it is always ends in “whelp the bathroom is locked now. Bummer.” Is there a way to find out more or is this something we will just learn in Book 2? I can wait, but if I am missing something or need to build other stats, I totally will

Thanks again for all of your hard work - rewrites or not, TSS is already in my Top 10

I enjoyed reading the story, but it felt pretty short. I’m curious if I was missing anything because it sorta did not feel like it was 600,000+ words. Good story, just felt like it ended too quickly.

Regarding R… you can’t get a kiss from him, even if you aren’t a bold flirt. You have to be in it for the long haul with him, I think. The most responsive he’s been is when the MC shy flirts with him. He’s actually pretty damned perceptive when you’re clueless and resistant, too. But he still won’t do anything about it. I’m hoping he is better in book 2, and think he will be from what Cara said.

As annoying as it is, I’m just happy A made a move, even if he backed off as soon as things were getting good! It’s more than we’ve gotten from almost every other HG game, even ones that are more romance focused.

Is G as good as A, btw? I thought he was too flaky for my tastes, but he really grew on me as I played. Q… I dunno about Q. My MCs made the bondage gear comment every time, lol.

@EvilChani Thanks! G was my fav from the start, so I may be biased…but I am a flirty gal who likes to know where I stand immediately, and get things moving right away (romance-wise) so G’s romance is perfect for me. (I am also a Nate/Wayhaven gal) although I will say that I played the WIP 20+ times and always romanced G and M and sometimes R…but after playing the full version, G is still my #1, but A (whom I never even considered romancing before) ended up being my #2. His scenes, both romantic and jealousy are just so good. He is a really layered character! Going back and replaying all of the romances with the jealousy scenes was almost as fun as doing the 1st romance playthroughs…sometimes moreso. So much work obviously went into each dynamic! (Oh and I had never really considered Q either…I am not big into the innocent/naive romances BUT I am glad I gave it a go after seeing the ending… i did not expect the sexy Q kiss ending AT ALL…rawr! Pleasantly surprised…he is now on the list! Anyway, G is still my fav. I just like the flirting and his end is good, imo. give him a try! (Also his jealousy scenes rival A’s. He goes about it the complete opposite way, but I LOVE IT jealous A: very cold, but cutting and obviously mad. Jealous G: annoyed but is all over you like SHE IS MINE BTW YOU ARE HILARIOUS FOR EVEN TRYING… I  him so hard

Ps. I cannot WAIT until we can get the Shadowman romance rolling…I picture him as Negan from The Walking Dead…yum

I didn’t find it short at all…did you expand on all of the conversation trees? I feel like when I was on my 4th playthrough and beyond I was having to skip through so many scenes it was crazy…I guess I beta/continuity test a lot though. Most games seem much shorter to me.

This one also has more routes than most. More ro’s. Added jealousy scenes. Plus scenes for anxiety, angst, disbelief, excitement. It definitely doesn’t skimp on content. Have you read other great games like CREATURES SUCH AS WE? it is good but short and all of the romances are the same scenes with the ro names changed. Aka, they didnt differentiate romances at all. Still a good premise, but short on different romance.content but still considered a great romance game for some reason (it is a great premise, I enjoy it…but repay value is 0…replay on this NOT short game is a lot.more)

@Jender I remember you were a Nate gal in Wayhaven! My MCs are typically bold flirts, but have zero emotional clue at all (my Dezh is a Mason girl, all the way, and all for the meaningless sex while she unwittingly falls flat on her face for him). Nate… well, in book 1, his response to bold flirting made Dezh run the other way, lol. My MC for TSS thinks G is hilarious and fun, but can’t see him as a romance option. I’m determined to make a MC specifically for G, though, because it sounds pretty damned good.

And A, OMG, isn’t he just awesome?? The romance scenes with him are just too perfect, and even when he’s such a dick after the piano scene, you just know it’s because you’re being watched–otherwise, I think sex on the piano might have been totally on the table. Or piano? His jealousy scenes are awesome, too. The ones between him and R made my MC feel like shit, though. Not that she thinks R really gives a damn–she couldn’t figure out why he was standing to the side watching her dance with A and looking so constipated about it, but was almost certain it was because he can’t stand A.

For Q… WTF!! There’s a sexy kiss with him??? I apparently need to check out Q’s path! He’s so shy and wussy seeming that even as a reader I had no desire to play through it! Seems I was incorrect.

And what you described for G made me totally want to play that path. And watch A’s head explode, lol.

Oh hell, I never thought of the Shadowman being Negan from TWD. I was gonna put someone in to romance him before, but now I’m all over it, first chance I get!

Question, is there a discord server for this game? Because I would join that in a heartbeat.

Thank you! ^^

My question is for the author, do we have to be ruthless to have no rivalry points with the Shadowman in the next book? or is there not going to be a save file at the end of book one?

Just want to say a big thank you for this game. It’s one of the best I played for a long time.
I can’t wait for the updates and of course the next book.

At first I had a really hard time choosing who to romance because none of them quiiite managed to capture me - although I liked Rheyla the best.

Then I found out there’s a love triangle route. Ho boy do I love me that jealousy/rivalry. I wanna punch A most of the time, but I’m gonna romance them both so hard and then drop A like a hot stone and go for R. It satisfies this very petty side of me.

I do agree with the criticism of the main plot - mainly I found myself being annoyed at all the vagueness and, as a result, with the group. However, as someone who cares mostly about character interactions, I quite enjoyed it anyway.

Looking forward to the sequel! (And flustering R to death.)

Not enough time for a review at the moment( will fix that soon enough), but the quality of this CYOA has me lamenting the trend of multiple parts because I want more!
