Hi everyone,
I’m Alex, a game developer with too little time for a bigger narrative project, so for this Halloween I wanted to write a short branching storybook, something inspired by CYOA or Fighting Fantasy, one that you can print and play. You know, have some fun writing, try an old-school genre, and lure my kids into it.
And what better way to motivate yourself (and your kids), than starting a game jam. Nothing fancy, no prizes, just fun of creating something to play for Halloween. It’s called “The Last Gamebook Jam”, hosted on Itch, running for 2 weeks (13 - 31 October 2025), and accepting both printable paper games (pdf format) and video games.
So, if anyone here wants to give it a try, here is the link to register:
Must be created for this jam—no pre-released content.
Out of curiosity, since there is another Halloween Jam ongoing on the forum, would entries for that jam be eligible for this jam as well since those games will only be made public after the 31st of October, or does it have to be something that is written specifically between the 13th and 31st of October, and isn’t entered in any other competitions, jams, or other Halloween events in the same timeframe as this one?
I’m not planning to participate in either, but the ‘no pre-released content’ being specified makes that rule feel a little ambiguous.
I wish you a lot of participants. I am as well, hosting a Jam here. The Halloween jam. Yours is really cool to add several media and paper. An advice would be that for gamebooks is super useful give the writers a minimum word account or that add choices and different endings. That helps them to plan with code and plan.
You can pm me if you want any advice or something. If I have time maybe even joining with a small something.
The OP can comment, but I think with most of these itch jams (ectocomp is another one running at the moment) they’re supposed to be written specifically for the jam so entering them anywhere else before that comp starts is generally frowned upon at best, disqualifies at worst.
