The Fernweh Saga: Book One (Discussion) [💚 Game Update, Post 1214]

Yes, he is a RO. Doesn’t get too far, but you can kiss him right near the end. More than you get from the other ROs!

That’s what Naia did! She’s a dramatic grump. XD

@swilson50125 @E_RedMark I found that gifset on my Tumblr after a bit of tag searching; it’s: here, and features the vintage Plymouth Barracuda that R affectionately calls Angelique. Also, the coloring on the gifset is very vibrant to enhance how moody and atmospheric of a movie Dark Shadows is, but the color is kind of close to what I have in mind with how it’s meant to be a head turning candy apple red. :red_car:

I agree with what you said @swilson50125 about the car model adding an interesting facet to R’s character; it’s not quite as classically high-end rather one of a kind with a rarity that adds value to it.

(:eyes: @ the conversation about the W.)

Edit: I’ve also gotten some really good questions via DM (PM? Not sure what it’s called on here). I appreciate your patience as I slowly work on replies here and elsewhere along with taking care of some stuff at home. I’ll likely add a question or two to the FAQ. Thank you all for the support, reviews/ratings, and kindness! :green_heart:

Contains spoilers, but most of them only make sense if you’ve already played through the scene:

Welcome to the Town of Fernweh

On a dark forest highway
Best friend sleeping fair
A cheesy lovesong
Rising up through the air
And then in the dashboard
I saw a bli-inking light
Pedals grew heavy and the engine grew dim
Car was shot for the night

I crossed the BnB doorway
After ringing the bell
And I was thinking to myself
“So many theme rooms, I hope I choose well”
Then she called up her offspring
Who showed me the way
But a voice invaded my sleep
I thought I heard it saaaaay

Welcome to the town of Fernweh
Such a lovely place (such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face
Plenty of weird at the town of Fernweh
Any time of year (Any time of year)
It can cause you fear

And there’s the old rival
Driving across the bend
She got a lot of pretty, pretty cars
That she call friends
And a rambling old lady
Filled with regret
Pay heed to what she tells you
Try not to forget

So I called up the Detective
“It’s been a long time”
They said, “I can’t tell you all here
But all’s not fine.”
And still that voice is calling from far away
Set your childhood home ablaze
And you can hear it saaaaaaay

Welcome to the town of Fernweh
Such a lovely place (such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face
They’re dying all over the town of Fernweh
What a bad surprise (what a bad surprise)
Check folks’ alibis

A table set for a meal
A platter refused thrice
The voice said, “You’re just a prisoner here
Of my own device”
And in the deadly grotto
Where the deadly thing did feast
It stabbed at us with its woody knives
'Til we manged to kill the beast

Last thing I remember
I was closing the car door
I had to find the passage back
To the place I was before
“Goodbye”, said the town sign
“We are programmed to receive
You can check out any time you like
But you can never leave.”

A lovely and fitting ballad!

Which was?

Eeeeh, it’s ok. When I have time I need to go over it to add the missing scenes, this was just a quick and dirty thing that was easy enough to do by matching the original song.

Hotel California

@JBento That’s amazing and was so much fun to read. Thanks for posting/sharing it here.

I plan Evelyn (my MC) on my second playthrough to be a bit friendly with the waiter. Although she will not be pursuing them, it would be a nice thing to have allies in the town.

Second, I have to solidify her personality. I noticed that her personality is all over the place by the end. I tend to choose depending on the situation she was in my first playthrough.

I probably need to create an MC for J that’s more bold/charming and extroverted. Evelyn will probably more introverted and shy. The latter went from denial to shy with R but I will probably have to try full denial and full shy one of these days.

Edit: @JBento When you mentioned Hotel California, I can’t stop trying to fit what you type down with the melody.

I feel stupid for audibly laughing at this in a crowded bar, well done.

Hopefully it’s not too hard. It SHOULD work just fine, considering I basically just reworded the verses.

Never feel stupid for joy. You know who’s stupid? All those people in that crowded bar who AREN’T enjoying themselves enough to laugh.

Damn Yeah! The '70 'Cuda fits my girl Ruby like a glove. Strong, sexy, a classic, and truly hit. I can just see her flying down the backroads of Fernweh, top down and sunglasses on.

@JBento That is great. Kudos to you :smiley:I wish that I had some of your creativity.

As a fellow dog-not-particularly-enjoyer (but far from hater), I also appreciated this. Worked out very well.

Well, technically you can kiss J. And you can get a technical kiss from B too!

Edit: I’ve been going back through the thread to check crazy theories, and wanted to respond to this:

I agree with those in previous discussions who said that there’s a time loop of some kind happening, one which has already gone through a number of cycles. I wondered if maybe the ticks on the door reflected the number of cycles that had already passed. Just an idle theory.

From J?? I haven’t played J’s solo route. Looks like I’ll be doing that now. Thanks!

I’ll eventually get to B. I have yet to make a MC that works well with him. J is easy enough to make one that fits.

Okay, time to code dive this one…

I don’t think it depends on the route, only on a choice you make about your MC’s past.

More specifically, if you used to have a thing (or not) for S, R, or J during your adolescence pre-fire. You can pine for J (like you can for R and S), or you can have J be MC’s first kiss (but the relationship as a whole didn’t remain more romantic than “friends only”).

So… since W has been confirmed as a secret RO that is only temporarily marginal, does anyone know what the deal with A is? Makes sense that they had few scenes in Book 1 but they can have a crush on the pc, the game keeps track of you flirting with them and acts accordingly and since you can encourage their possible interest in B, I’d assume it’s a fair game.

does anyone remember the old lady’s name in chapter 2? I forgot her name so if you could tell me I would appreciate it please and thank you in advance.

Really enjoyed the book, excited for the next one :grinning:

Just to put in my 2 cents about M, if they’re with/are the GL, it 's a little odd that they don’t do anything sinister, because there are opportunities for them to do so. They clearly know things they shouldn’t like what room the MC is staying in (referenced in the letter M drawing), which means they are likely supernatural; as someone else pointed out possibly a vampire due to the invitation thing in the dream. And speaking of the dream, they struck me more as a concerned third party that somehow intruded on the nightmare to help. It really felt like it wasn’t a fake M but actually M appearing, unlike the others, that’s just a hunch though. However, the achievement for learning their nickname (Mal) is ‘don’t take it too literally’, so unless they’re involved in a super long and convoluted con, this points me more towards a lone wolf ally, although a somewhat strange and sometimes creepy one. Although that could be because we don’t know much about them so it’s coming off that way.

Anyway, I sure hope M isn’t evil, cause that would be kind of a red flag relationship-wise, but that never stopped me before
For female M the femme fatale vibe is just too good to resist, it’d be a real bummer if she wanted to eat your soul or whatever. I’d really like a femme fatale RO, just without the fatal part.

I finally finished my first playthrough and it was amazing! I really enjoyed reading this book, the story is very immersive and I couldn’t stop thinking about it while I played it for several days.

Now in more detail with heavy spoilers!

What I liked a lot is how unsettling and anxious the story made me feel, which is great because it’s a horror/thriller, but to balance that out we have an amazing cast of supportive and caring characters who were always there for the MC during these troubling events. There were so many scenes that made me so mushy with how nicely ROs treated the MC, and also how they interacted with each other, they’re all just so precious :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: Seriously, the characters are extremely likable, I enjoyed building friendships with all of them. On my first run I romanced J and they were so sweet and gentle, I can’t express in words how much I love them! Can’t wait to replay and experience other routes as well.

The book also made me very emotional and even made me cry three times! I admit, I’m a very sensitive person, but it doesn’t mean that I cry about literally anything  The first time was when reading the second part of grandfather’s journal, the second was when revelation about R’s dad happened, and the last time was when MC said goodbye to J before “leaving” Fernweh. Oh, I loved the last plot twist, it was so disturbing, we can’t leave! :scream: Even though I didn’t want to do it anyway because it meant leaving the love of my life behind, so it’s not that bad, right? Poor B though…

Another thing I want to mention is stats. I really liked how the information on the stats page kept changing constantly throughout the story, as if it were an additional narrative device rather than just a bunch of traits and numbers.

Overall, the book was great, and now I proclaim myself a fan of the series and patiently wait for the continuation of the story. Thank you so much @lacunafiction for this masterpiece!
