Alas! One can’t have everything.
This may not be exactly related to the game, but I just wanted to tell you, guys, that I’ve uploaded the first patron-only short story on my Patreon.
It’s written in the second person (gender neutral) because I wanted you to be able to feel like it’s about you and Menkaure. You are an Egyptian scribe from Iunu (Heliopolis), and you were sent by the vizier to deliver an important scroll to Pharaoh Menkaure. The story takes place a few days before Menkaure’s fight with Aqenenre that ended with his imprisonment.
Perhaps you can imagine that this character is your character from ToEN in their previous incarnation? Wouldn’t that be romantic? ^^
Aw, I’m sad I don’t have money right now. Oh well, congrats on the release!
I don’t think I’d enjoy the idea of a reincarnation though, as I strongly dislike the reincarnation concept itself
The big update is here, guys! This means that Chapter 3 is now complete. I’m going to take a couple of days off to regain my strength before Chapter 4, but I’ll be back in no time.
Here’s the list of changes:
- Added the last part of Chapter 3 (ca. 6700 words, excluding code). Chapter 3 is now complete.
- Changed the name of the boy you meet in Ch 3 from Djedi to Dedi.
- Fixed multiple spelling errors.
OMG, it’s an update! Thank you for your hard work! Can’t wait to see what’s in store for us
How many words do you think the full game is going to have, code excluded?
@IvoryOwl I can’t say for sure, but it should have about 180k. I definitely don’t want it to have more than 200k because it was supposed to be a relatively short game. Seven days (no pun intended), a single major plotline, and horror elements. The longer it gets, the more difficult it will be to keep it scary and unsettling. Also, a single plotline is limiting in itself, and I don’t want to write filler content for this particular story. Thanks for asking!
@Mei_Hiroshi Thank you so much! I really appreciate your words!
Hi again! I found another minor bug. In my route Zephyros left with the caravan, but it says he’s here in this sentence.
Do you mean noxious or nauseous? I assume its the latter.
Noxious implies something foul and toxic, whereas nauseous usually refers to how you feel physically, like when you’re dizzy, sick in the stomach, or want to throw up.
@Grimeowlkin @IvoryOwl Both these things should be fixed now! Thank you for reporting them!
Ooh okay so I finally got the time to play through the rest of chapter 3 with my favorite alchemist and Menkuare! Zephyros also stayed this time as a friend, so I was really glad that he’s got my back even if I didn’t choose any romance options.
About the choice on how to spend your time…sitting with old ladies is nice and all, but I definitely wished I could have been more productive in that time. I didn’t learn too much and wondered why I kept sitting there when I could have got up to do something else (unless that’s bad etiquette or something). I think if you limit the reader’s choice and cite time as the reason, maybe say you only have an hour to do something, instead of a few hours? That would make more sense to me, but I mean, I guess I’m just being nitpicky here and regret my choice lol :’).
Also this is something I’ve always wondered when “eat/don’t eat or drink/don’t drink” choices come up, but is it possible to just…pretend to consume? Like what if I put the glass to my lips but don’t actually let anything into my mouth? But blood is deliciously sweet I guess ¯_(ツ)_/¯
I might decrease the amount of time to make it a bit more realistic. I cannot let the MC enter the archives because they’re closed. Also, the second half of Chapter 4 will be all about the archives.
You can do that if you’re trained in bluff (only rogues are). You pretend to take a sip and act as if the drink was incredibly tasty.
I’ve already corrected the typos. As always, thank you for pointing them out! They will be gone once I upload the next update. It might even happen today. We’ll see.
Also, I’m glad someone is playing as an alchemist!
I’d like to run a poll, guys. I know that the romances aren’t that developed yet (the next update is all about relationships!), but I’m very curious about your favorite love interests.
Question: Who is your favorite love interest in ToEN?
- Zephyros
- Myrine
- Menkaure
- Persenet
- Apepi

Feel free to explain why in the comments!
Half-god, power-hungry, megalomaniac people cute.
Although that’s probably just me.
Had to choose Apepi bc I find that ‘villain’ romances tend to have some pretty interesting plots on their own (so i’m excited to see how this goes!!), and also someones gotta take one for the team
As I mentioned before, Menkaure just gives me this mysterious villain vibe. He intrigues me… And I love me some villain romance!
The new update is here!
I do need to point out that only Persenet’s and Apepi’s paths are available at the moment. Menkaure and Z/M will be added in the next update. But… you can always save the game and try spending some time with A or P, right? Perhaps you’ll actually like them? ^^
Changelog
22 August 2020
- Added the first part of Chapter 4 (ca. 7150 words, excluding code).
- Slightly modified the ‘poison’ scene from Chapter 3.
- Fixed a few spelling errors.
Guuuuys, please give Apepi and Persenet some looove!
I have to admit, of all the love interests, none are as interesting as M.
Maybe its because you constructed the story in a way that gently-but-heavily pushes the player to side with or prefer this particular character (though, admittedly, a big portion of it comes from reading this thread and not the game itself), but the others are… I don’t know… they just feel weak in comparison. Though I guess I should also be fair in that there’s little going on for them ATM and that may change in the future.
Apepi left a bad impression on me right from the get-go (not an author problem, just didn’t like his personality much.) Everything about him screams suspicion and deception, and the irony isn’t lost on me that his name is kind of related to the Serpent of Chaos… even though Apepi wasn’t that uncommon of a name back then.
Persenet… nothing against her but the main problem here is she stands no chance against Menkaure, and all of the things that make him unique and stand out. She’s just a “boring” head slave in comparison.
Zephyros. More of a personal thing, as I’m not a very big fan of the whole greek/roman-esque theme and that goes for this character.
I have to say that I’m not a big fan of arguing and I’m not really trying to start an actual argument, but… I love these characters too much to simply not answer that. I am grateful for your feedback, but I will say that it feels like this sentence is meant to be objective, when… it kind of isn’t. (And there’s nothing wrong with being subjective!)
You might be right about that, but it’s interesting that this happened because Menkaure wasn’t even supposed to be in the game. This game started off as a concept for a novel, and Menkaure wasn’t even in that concept. Zephyros was supposed to be Egyptian, and his name used to be Den. He was supposed to be the romantic partner for the MC. Persenet and Apepi were still there, but they were secondary characters.
Hopefully, this last update changed that. Apepi and Persenet each got 3000 words long paths, and they should now be much more fleshed out.
Apepi: The problem with him lies in the fact that you still don’t know much about him, and you will not know until the last chapters. However, I do hope that this last update made him more enjoyable to have around. I’ve got to admit that I liked writing his path more than I thought I would.
Persenet: First of all, Persenet is not a slave. I’ve never called her a slave in the game, and it wasn’t because I was afraid of the word. I am not. However, slavery wasn’t nearly as common in Egypt as people like to imagine. Most servants, workers and peasants weren’t slaves. They had rights and they received compensation for their work. People tend to think otherwise because there was no concept of money in Egypt and so their compensation came mostly in the form of food.
Persenet gives you more than just romance. It gives you extra possibilities. You can save Dedi from having to stay at the temple, and you can all leave together. You can even start a servant (not slave) rebellion near the end of the game. All of these things are only possible if you choose Persenet, and none of them force you to romance her. You can just as well be friends.
Zeph/Myrine: I agree that it’s possible some people may dislike the idea of a Greek hero, but I think many of us actually like it. Just take a look at the poll. But! that’s why there are options in the game!
Again, I’m not trying to argue. I just want to point out to others that might be reading this thread that Apepi, Z/M and Persenet are not objectively boring.
Thank you for giving Apepi a chance. I honestly hope you enjoyed (or will enjoy) the newest update!
I’m glad you still like him! Though… I feel like I should point out that Menkaure is not the villain of this story… He was seen as a villain by Aqenenre and his people, but he’s not even connected to the main story of ToEN. There’s a different villain. Ahem, even two.
Just don’t tell him he’s a half-god…
I did find the new update really enjoyable, especially since it offered up some new lore to look at! (Although I do admit I did code dive a little bit to see the answer to the one question I wasn’t able to ask him )
