I have played the demo on mobile the sizing seems fine for me i think

@jasonstevanhill @Sade98

Thanks Sade and Jason. I think the sizes are fine. Early on in development, I had someone bring up an issue with some of the images and resized them.

The issue is the amount of images - over 370, most for a map mechanic.

Now, I have turned almost all of the images into jpgs.

I have significantly reduced the size now.

The game is 200MB.

EDIT: This is a lesson learned. I think in terms of PC rather than phones. No more! If I start a future project, I will be far more sensible :crossed_fingers:

EDITEDIT: Happily, lowering the quality has seemed to improve some of my pictures! But then I do have a bit of an affinity for the 16bit era.

I have managed to get the game down to 81MB.

I think it is manageable now for data. Hopefully it is comparable in size (perhaps slightly larger) to other CS games.

Most CS games are 20-30 MB. The newly released Werewolf: BOHN, the biggest CoG game ever in wordcount terms, is 40.8. Trial of the Demon Hunter, which IIRC was one of the few HGs to incorporate sound, clocked in at 41.73.

The reason for the size is the abundance of images used for the map screen. In total, there are over 370. I do have a large word count, not quite as much as Werewolf BOHN, but realise that this is only a fraction of the total size.

The map effect is a nice novelty, which tracks conquests, but it does have a negative in terms of space and data.

EDIT: Perhaps it is a good idea for me to add a note to the game description regarding the size. I feel it is getting to the point where I cannot further reduce the quality of the images. But, in my defence, the extra size is being put to use and has been greatly reduced.

Night Road is at 94MB, which makes it the heaviest game in CoG I believe.

HG also has a few chunky ones, namely WftW (40MB) and Raiders of Icepeak Mountain (52MB, iirc), so you should be fine, if definitely near the record.

Thank Jjcb.

@Jacic mentioned that a 94MB game (which must be Night Road) received criticism for the demands of phone data, since size is not a problem for steam.

I think I must accept this as part and parcel of the ‘vision’ of the game. It is good to know larger games have already been made.

An orc game would always be a little on the bulky side…

Was night road that large? (I didn’t know that (didn’t download it to my phone so didn’t pay attention to the size of that one.) The one I was thinking of was the Oz game which contained large image files and there were quite a few comments by people upset that they didn’t realise that it was going to take that much data to download or the space it was taking up in their phone from memory. Most choice games are significantly smaller due to mostly being text rather than images. (Although it seems that is changing to an extent with images appearing in some games.)

81mb sounds a lot better (although still in the ballpark of where people have gotten upset about in the past. The large wordcount might tip people off though to an extent, especially if night road was up in that range). Would still be nice to note the size somewhere, but far less likely to get people freaked out compared to if it was over 300.

Hi Jacic,

I’ve been told Night Road is that large, which led me to think that was the game you were referring too. Although I shifted through some of the reviews and didn’t find a mention of size. BECAUSE, you were talking about another game!

Haha, shows how much I know.

I honestly feel, though you would know far better than me, that 80MB is, currently, acceptable or bearable for a larger project. I could be completely wrong but, based on a small poll here and a message on the HG reddit, no one had a concern over 80MB- 400MB yes, but not 80.

So, big thanks for warning me and leading me to reduce the size. I think, if people enjoy my game, then the size (as it is now) will not be a big factor. If they dislike the game, the size will be among other factors- if you get what I mean.

I will certainly be managing the data footprint better in any future project.

Thanks to the wise heads who gave a newbie a bit of a grounding.
