SPECIAL AGENT MONSTER (HIGH-SCHOOL MYSTERY, POWER FANTASY, ROMANCE) (WIP) (72k)

“After your mother’s sudden and inexplicable death, you—a 17-year-old high schooler—are sent to live with an uncle you’ve never met. A man who couldn’t even be bothered to attend his own sister’s funeral. Arriving in the restless sprawl of New York City, you expect nothing but a noisy, ordinary life.”

“But your uncle is not what he seems. And neither is the city.”

“Everything changed the moment that fly bit you.”

SPECIAL AGENT MONSTER (SAM) is a dark, action-driven interactive novel hosted on Choice of Games. You play as a 17-year-old whose life spirals after their mother’s apparent suicide. Sent to New York to live with your estranged uncle, you’re bitten by a rare insect known as a Chimera-Fly, awakening extraordinary abilities fueled by Super Cells—microscopic organisms hidden within all living beings. This discovery pulls you into a hidden world of monsters, power, and danger moral dilemmas.

<-FEATURES->

  • A complex power system based on cell theory and evolution.

  • Humanoid monsters, new species, evolving tech, unexplored regions, and messy politics all coexist in one living world.

  • Juggle classes, school events, and friendships in your “High School Life” while juggling your powers and a double life.

  • Face choices that question your ideals and the kind of person you want to be.

  • And lastly… someone watches from the dark. Unknown. Unseen. But every move he makes leads to one thing…

War. One humanity may not survive.

  • (Plus there’s lots-a-references.)

(This story is a mix of action, high-stakes mystery, psychological horror, humor, and draws inspiration from Men In Black, Attack on Titan, Jujutsu Kaisen, and My Hero Academia.)

ROMANCE OPTIONS

Johnny Steele, will always be fun-loving, optomist of the group. Always cracking jokes, proposing to anyone even remotely attractive, and hiding his deep insecurities behind a smile. RYUJI SAMEJIMA:

Tall, aloof, and antisocial, Ryuji is a half-human, half-wereshark hybrid with a reserved demeanor. Though he prefers solitude, he’s fiercely protective of those he cares about. His cold exterior hides a talent for seafood cooking and being rather awkward in social situations.

Fascinated by monsters and monster society, she wants to further her skill in the research field, all while keeping her dark past under wraps. (What could that barcode tattoo mean?) QUINN FINNEGAN:

Quiet, awkward, and painfully polite, Quinn is the group’s eminence in shadow (heh) working behind the scenes. He lacks natural combat abilities and inherited powers, but his cursed glasses allow him to see Pheromones and grants him unnatural power at the cost of his lifespan. A reclusive teen with strong ideals, he guides the team with his remarkable skill in tech.

NATSUMI NAGASAKI:

Bubbly, obsessed, and sometimes dangerous, Natsumi is a skilled assassin with a troubled past. Though initially detached and self-serving, she develops an obsessive crush for the MC with a twisted idea of love. She barely knows wat that word means. Trained by one of the world’s top assassins, she wields both blades and her tamed Shadow, Monolith.

REINA FLAMINGUERRA:

Fiery, brash, and fiercely proud, Reina is the last heir of the infamous Flaminguerra devil familia. Quick to anger and often snapping at those she cares about, she hides her softer, affectionate side behind her hot-headedness, a result of insecurities created by childhood discrimination that she might learn to overcome.

[PERSONALITY TYPE DETECTED]

Hard-Working Idiot

Hey, who gave you my personal profile from my job? :joy:

Anyway, that was nice. There’s a bit too much style here for my taste (damn, I read too fast to patiently wait for slow-appearing lines in all text games using this trick), but the plot itself is intriguing. Good luck writing!

Could you add something so that I can download the saves

Noted, I’ll probably tone down the style a little for the next chapter

Love the story so far, and the custom UI you made is really interesting.

Just wanted to ask if we are able to choose the main character’s skin colour or if it’s set? Near the beginning after we choose eye/hair colour it tells us that we are a “fair-skinned [boy/girl/person]” with our chosen eye/hair colour and hairstyle. Was just wondering if this is a bug. No problem if it’s not, not trying to force any changes!

Small typo

“He hadn’t realized it until now” → should it be “You hadn’t realized it until now”?

Great game overall, very strong start, the personality lock is a bit annoying but that’s all for the complaints, I have 1 small question though: how many intentional jojo references in this are there?

This is sooo cool!!! From the teaser to the custom UI, the characters and the LOREEEEE! I am so excited to see how this develops in the future one slight gripe I have is when battling the monster that there is a long period without any choices given which for me (might not be the same for others) drags out a lot but I don’t think its a flaw though anyways LOVE IT

I didn’t actually finish the demo, I only got to the end of Chapter 1, but…I did not enjoy this. It very much feels like a fanfiction written for the author’s OC, rather than an interactive game that people can play. People were constantly calling my character the wrong name (unless ‘Livio’ is some foreign word everyone uses that I’ve never heard before), there were multiple times I wasn’t given any choice about what my character was doing (and why can’t I select my character’s height?), and a lot of the personality options made no sense to me (I kept getting ‘ruthless’ when I was aiming for ‘quiet and shy’).

The other PoVs were interesting sometimes, but they started getting WAY overdone later on, to the point where it felt like ‘my character’ didn’t exist at all. Especially the Ace PoV, which definitely felt like the author going ‘look how cool and awesome my character is’. The character pages in the menu don’t work either, so I couldn’t look up his name when the game asked. The title says ‘power fantasy’, but to me, it felt like the author’s personal power fantasy, and not something made for other people to enjoy…

The previous comment sums up what I was trying to put into words, more or less. There are huge stretches of text with no options and a ton of stuff about the MC is preset (you panic about the curfew even if selecting that you don’t give a damn about it repeatedly, you must be 5’11, you will wear glasses)

Congrats on releasing the first chapter! The premise is quite intriguing and I really enjoyed the section with puzzles. The dialogues with choices were interesting too, I wonder how they will look like with personality locked. Speaking of which - the stats in the psyche profile haven’t changed after the lock, is this supposed to happen?

I’ll be honest though, the sewers section was kinda hard for me to get through. I’ve read the author’s note, but it’s at the end of the chapter and frankly wouldn’t have changed the experience anyway. It’s 90% POVs (which I started skipping at some point), MC is mostly referenced as they/them and sometimes called Livio for some reason. And I couldn’t even choose how he feels (especially since I’ve been aiming for the ruthless personality). All of that broke my immersion, I’m afraid.

Also there are three scenes with Ace being super cool… too much for just one chapter, I think…

Still, it’s only my opinion. I see you have a lot of passion for the project, so good luck with it)

Ok, so from my understanding of your review, the main issue seems to be the lack of choices — or rather, the limited player input?

If that’s the case, I totally understand where you’re coming from, and those are valid points. However, since this is the first chapter, the intention was to showcase how the MC is meant to feel somewhat vapid and undeveloped at this stage of the story. I wanted the player character to have a defined identity to some extent—which is why with certain cases, like skin color (since genealogy and lineage will play an important role later), wearing glasses, and height, are preset. (That said, I can probably make some of these customizable.)

As I mentioned at the end of the game, this chapter is mainly an introduction and doesn’t have many branching paths yet. For example, the next chapter involves solving a case and will feature many more choices.

Regarding the character pages—they do work, but not all of the information about the current characters has been revealed in the narrative yet. Those details will come later.

Also, apologies for the bugs! I’ll get those fixed soon.

As for the “fanfiction” comment, I’m not entirely sure what you meant by that. It’s not intended to come across that way (I really don’t want it to come across that way, there’s just people that will seem stronger and more known than the MC in the verse) but, this section mainly serves to introduce the characters and set up the story. That won’t be the focus in later chapters, but I’ll definitely keep your feedback in mind.

Thanks again for the feedback. I really appreciate it, and I’ll be editing the chapter soon!

These are all bugs, by the way—I’ll fix them soon. The default name and gender you saw were just placeholders from when I first started making the game.

Also, Ace doesn’t have much presence in the next chapter… but if you stick around, you’ll see why he was so important…

(This is my first time ever writing a ChoiceScript game, sorry lol. I’ve just really enjoyed playing them and wanted to give it a try myself!)

There won’t be anymore chapters like this, lmao
