September 2024's Writer Support Thread

Wait, how many randomtest iterations are you checking?

Is 10 000 not enough anymore?

I was paranoid because this particular thing (obscure friendship/romance breakups) has been a thorn in my side so I thought ā€œhaha I’ll do a really long set of seeds just to make sure while I do something else in the afternoonā€. Now I have regrets. I could have lived in blissful ignorance…

Yeah, as a complaint that’s weird. It doesn’t really affect anything, other than a few seconds of extreme concentration trying to make sure you pick the right one :joy:. Though I will admit that I’m always surprised when there’s a choice for gender and pronouns, separately. My intitial thought is alway ā€œdidn’t I just tell you that?ā€

It’s a little clunky, and hard to imagine. I think I would say something like ā€œhe put his elbow through the strap of his backpack, using it like a slingā€

How are you supposed to say things like ā€œcan I help you?ā€ if you disregard pronouns completely? It has two!

Back to drawing board then. The idea is supporting both elbows inside the loop of their respective shoulder straps when you have your arms crossed. It’s something I do regularly myself, but I don’t know how to describe it…

ā€œNeed/want help?ā€

Imagine doing that all the time with everything and trying to separate ā€œmy keysā€ from ā€œyour keysā€.

Easy. All the keys are mine. Your keys do not exist.

Names and object that was the original way to describe property it is very cumbersome because if you don’t know who own X you are screwed

Investigation sequences where you can go back and revisit people and clues with new evidence have so many variations… why did I do this to myself?

Because you’re a masochist.

Exhibit A: You play League. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m pretty sure I’ve fixed this very stupid and obscure bug. It’s not likely that a human player would want to/manage to trigger it, but it was that a certain set of choices required not having fully alienated all of the characters. RandomTest somehow did it, so there were no options available.

All the characters looking at the RandomTest ā€œplayerā€:

Well now, don’t underestimate the players’ willingness to alienate everyone. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m pretty sure I’m the player that wants to alienate everyone.

You’d really have to be strategic to trigger this particular alienation bug… But now, thankfully, it’s no longer a problem!

There should be a hidden achievement called ā€œI can’t believe you’ve done thisā€¦ā€ tied to that specific outcome since it’s both difficult to get and also makes everyone have the attitude of ā€œWtf dudeā€¦ā€

I’ve already had one playtester who’s committed to betraying as much of the core cast as possible.

And this thing is barely half written.

Honestly, that sounds incredibly useful.

I’ve done horrible things to characters I loved, in the name of beta testing.

I’ve even asked authors to make it possible for me to do (semi-)horrible things they hadn’t planned on to characters I loved. (Forgive me, Asher, forgive me!)

I’ve destroyed games in the name of testing.

I’m reporting in to say: I have completed my first draft of the Halloween Jam entry!

I kept my focus on completing the game in under 30,000 words, and I have completed that stretch goal as well.

Now, for the rest of the month, I will be refocused on my first edit-pass for Patchwerks

I don’t think I will finish it entirely, but I am happy with the pace I am keeping on it.

I relate, both as an author and a tester.

Sounds fun. I can’t wait until turn-in date, so I can play your entry.

I’m not actually going to come out and say that I’m the most assiduously dispassionate beta tester who will stop at nothing, not the utmost depths of depravity, for the greater glory of interactive fiction, but …

I’m playing Honor Bound tonight and I

shooed

THE

CAT

That is all.
