Season of Shadows - A Regency Story (WIP) UPDATED 30 Apr [Prologue + Chapter One, 81K words]

The option will be there. But Virtue will send him stink bombs by mail forever after  Cat will send worse.

Can’t do that if she doesn’t know his address! :face_with_tongue:

They will know! Somehow.

On the plus side he does seem to like Iris (dresses notwithstanding), so maybe he won’t have to run from that moneylender’s daughter.

And Iris is so smart she’ll invent a system to mail the stink bombs right back to the sisters too! As long as he has her, no matter where they end up, they’ll be fine. :face_with_tongue: Yeah shame, I feel so cruel that I subject her to those dresses. But she’ll get her revenge and more.

Sounds like a perfect pairing. She’ll make sure the finances run smoothly, and he’ll challenge everyone who’ll try to subject her to horrible dresses (or claim girls can’t do math) to a duel.

(Which reminds me, the “you dance very well for a man who looks as if he’d rather duel the orchestra” in the dance scene made me snicker so hard, despite how it made no sense to me for him to look that way since loves dancing, because now I’m picturing him doing just that.)

They do sound perfect together <3

That line is really just because Alexandra’s embarrassing him, nothing to do with the dancing. But I can see how it can be taken that way. Alexandra likes to provoke people - she’s been shamed so much that she’s ended up becoming rather shameless. (But she’s kind too, so those two sides of her really war with each other. I’m just busy writing a scene with her now as we speak lol.)

Aaahhh, that makes so much more sense now!

Given that you’ve said we can make requests, I’ll just repeat the two I’ve already made. I’d like an option to be more standoffish/cold (like the mother) and an option for plainer/more tailored dresses and gowns. And given that dogs have come up, could we have (eventually) one of our own? The option to be more used to hunting dogs than lapdogs is a bit meaningless just now.

Also, the selection for languages being your talent still boosts the music stat. Please don’t forget about that.

All your changes are implemented already. :+1: I just can’t upload it yet because chapter one and the prologue aren’t finished as I’m doing my big edit. If I upload the files now the game will be unplayable. It’ll be uploaded the same time as chapter two, hopefully in a few weeks.

As for your own dog, I was thinking about this yesterday. I adore doggos, I have a husky who’s my favourite vertebrate in the world bar none, but I’m not sure if I can make it meaningful to the story? (Since other MC’s will not have dogs.) Was also considering a horse for equestrian MC. But the horse can’t really go to London because there aren’t stables in most London townhouses. Let me think about it more, I’ll let you know.

One of my nephews has a husky. They are the clowns of the dog world. And it’s drama queens!

They are amazing  I love mine so much my username is her name

He had to get rid of his echo device because she learned how (somehow) to turn it on and play her favourite song. She trained the AI!

Yeah, they’re smart! But most people don’t think so because they don’t listen. (Personally, I think not unquestioningly obeying is the real sign of intelligence lol.)

Here’s the real Kwartel: :beating_heart:

Quasimodo would be noticeable, I want my MC to be so plain and wallflower-esque that her own mother says “Who?” when someone mentions their daughter. :upside_down_face:

Ha! The coy “why no, I’m not up to anything. Particularly anything potentially embarrassing…for you” face! She’s gorgeous!

You know what, I identify with that. I like to fly below the radar myself. But I think the plain and untalented MC option will work for this. I’ll just add some more flavour text. Or perhaps offer a plain MC in the character creation bit, and you can then make them talented if you like later. By the way, are you interested in writing Regency yourself?

Thank you <3 My husky daughter is very pretty indeed :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:. And a real princess.

If it is still time for requests, I would like to mention that the male jilted lover doesn’t get to choose if he sleeps with his (ex)fiance like females. While it doesn’t have the same weight for men, it is useful to set the MC’s attitude towards sex: i.e. oblivious, embarrassed (virgin), embarrassed (experienced), unabashed (virgin), unabashed (experienced).

Which leads me into what I really want: playing a rake! We have the scandal but it’s all so tame. We need some options to indulge in vices more, like drinking and smoking. Maybe a visit to an opium den? And given one of the origins, there should definitely be a lot of gambling options. Also flirting, or even conveying interest, seems to be sadly lacking in the first encounters with ROs; I would have loved to be able to subtly proposition characters at first meaning and see their reaction.

Ultimately, I have an idea for a playthrough where a gorgeous male MC falls for and sleeps with his fiance only to realize later that she was only after him for his looks; she sees him as good for a brief fling but not actual marriage. Disillusioned with love he internalizes that people are only after him for his looks and just starts playing the field. Bonus points for lots of flings or even just developing a reputation without the actual rendezvous. Even more bonus points for waking up from his cynical take on romance and finding true love.

I’m not interested in writing, frankly I’m not very good at it. We must play to our strengths, and mine is not writing. Please don’t feel the need to provide everyone with every thing they want, you’ll wear yourself out that way.

If you are taking requests…I have two requests, both are dependent on historical accuracy being what you wish to prioritise. You’re a writer, not a historian so feel free to ignore them. These are suggestions, not criticism. You write really well, and it’s a lot easier to do what I do (nit pick historical points), than do what you do (create stories)

If keeping the narrative within an regency perspective, you need to stop using the first names of the ROs as much. G is fine as they are your close friend. But the MC wouldn’t be viewing the ROs through such a familiar lense as to use their first names.

Example- “Levi exhales sharply and, without another word, turns on his heel and disappears into the crowd.”

As an introduction, you can give the full name, but after that, the MC isn’t going to tempt to use their first name, even in their own heads, until they are very well acquainted

Re-considering some Names.

Naming is difficult. Upper classes during early 19th century preferred classical, greek, German, royal names.

Authentically spelled biblical names are seen as plain, common and lower class (Adam, Abraham, Miriam, Jacob, Sarah etc). Anglicised versions of biblical names were just about okay.

Within early 19th century context, some names you have are a bit iffy in terms of realistic historical accuracy, but still work-

Quinn - This is a modern name but works if Quinn is named after a matrilineal surname. Boys were often named after their mother’s / grandmother’s maiden names, (eg. Fitzwilliam Darcy is named after his mother’s maiden name, Fitzwilliam. It’s why his first name is the same as his cousin, Colonel Fitzwilliam’s surname). But I don’t see why a girl couldn’t be named after her mother or grandmother’s family line.

Lancelot - never seen used but works out as Percival, Gwendolen are used, big interest in Arthurian legend at the time, due to the whole war propaganda + patriotism thing.

Levi probably isn’t accurate at all, as its a direct biblical name, but I’ll let it pass as it sounds so good, if say its a family name passed down through the generations?(certain aristocratic families would just repeat the same names over again, grandsons would be named after grandfathers etc).

Lancelot’s surname - Linden - Works if you make sure he has Dutch / Flemish aristocratic ancestors…

Lake only works as a surname for a Viscount due to Gerard Lake, 1st Viscount Lake. The peerage was created on 31 October 1807 for the prominent soldier Gerard Lake, 1st Baron Lake.

No, the ones I ask to please be changed are…

  1. The mother’s name - Vera - Sorry, but this name wasn’t used during this period, I can only find examples in the mid-late 19th century. Also it’s very short + slavic for upper class in the Regency period. How about Victoria? Or Wilhelmina?

  2. The sister’s name - Virtue - The direct English words for virtues / honours weren’t used as first names by the upper classes as far as I can tell. However Latin names for virtues were (such a Prudence). So an alternative could be Verity? Or Viola from Shakespeare?

  3. William Blevin - sorry William’s surname is Welsh, and not used by Regency upper class as far I as I can see when trying to find references. Could it be changed? Alternatives- Beauchamp (Pronounced Beach-um during this time period), Belvoir (Bee-vor), Bolingbroke (Bulling-brook), Bythesea?

  4. Lord Bellamy - the only Bellamy I found was a parliament housekeeper who set up a coffee rooms, no aristocratic roots. I’ll try find an obnoxious surname as an alternative…

  5. Calpurnia - love the name, but again, couldn’t find any usage for your time period. How about Cressida? or Cecilia? Or Camilla?

  6. Levi’s surname - North > too short and Northern, no references to upper class England as far as I can tell. Northcote?

  7. Sir Elim Haines - You already have Levi as a direct biblical name, it wouldn’t be likely that you also have a aristocratic man named Elim, which is even more a religious name and even less likely to be used.

  8. Lord Thurmond - too Viking, the Normans have elbowed anything Viking sounding out of posh pronunciation by this stage…

  9. Hartstone - Too viking, how about Halsbury? Harcourt? Heathcote?

  10. Rockingham?! That’s neither a place or a name…See below for alternatives

  11. Baron of Millfort - couldn’t find any precedence. Also, don’t need the “of”. E.g. Baron Doverdale / Baron Ashfield.

I gathered possible name ideas so I don’t just complain about the names and then leave you hanging - (DM directly to author, sorry!)

There’s lists of surnames and first names for NPCs, for both upper + lower classes. Hope it helps.

@squealingpiggies Oh, I definitely want MC to be a rake if they wish! And indulge in bad habits if they wish too!. Maybe I was too slow though, I wanted to set the scene and introduce everyone first. (That’s how I prefer my IF, I want to meet someone first and then ruminate on whether I want to flirt and how I want to behave lol.) But rake MC won’t be thinking that way, and you’re totally right to point that out.

(I do have one steamy-ish encounter coming up this next chapter (although it’s kind of difficult to get to) because I did consider that not everyone is a snail like me. But it seems I’m still too snail like lol.)

As for our ex-fiance, he or she will be turning up soon enough, armed with back-story

@AnneWest Okay, I’ve thought about it. MC can have a pet - a dog, cat or some kind of bird, or possibly something more exotic… or nothing. And equestrian MC can bring their horse to London, where it will be stabled outside Mayfair. The pets and horse will definitely have some cameos, but they won’t be integral to the story. (Unless my brain decides to go on strange escapades, which is entirely possible.) That good?

@judy I appreciate it, thank you so much for the list. And I’ll change what I can. Honestly, I don’t think I can rename my main characters at this point  I did check online for names used during the Regency - granted, I did not check whether these names were used for the aristocracy, my bad. But those are my characters for me now. I’ve lived with those names for months. I’ll change minor characters though, for sure. Do you have suggestions for a replacement for Viscount Lake?

I also appreciate you saying not to listen to everyone - but I was going to have rake MC options anyway and a pet is pretty much flavour text. I’m stubbourn, I will say no if I don’t want to. Thank you <3
