Royal Affairs Discussion Thread and Romance Guide (Spoilers Within)

Oh, I don’t think it’s unclear, I was just wondering if there were more interactions at the party planned for after the demo ends. Well, guess when I go for the “real” playthrough I’m leaving Javi to fend for herself, cos Beaumont is an option and she’s the Achiever in this game. Sucks to be you, Javi.

I encountered a bug here it won’t let me move past the choices on this section.

Sure enough, the next morning sees the arrival of your sausage dog Ollie during the night, and Fabien too, early in the morning. When you go out to check on Ollie in the kennels, Fabien is there too, grooming his long-haired hound, Pierre.

He nods amiably to you as you enter. Despite his long blue greatcoat and fur hat, he looks much the same as he did when you last saw him: a lightly-built man around your mother’s age, with pale skin and carefully-combed brown hair. Smile-lines deepen around his gray eyes as he grins at you.

Seneschal Fabien’s been a part of your life since before you can remember; as your mother’s oldest friend, he’s practically an uncle, though he’s always insisted that he’s too young to be called such a thing. In the strange dizzy months after your father’s death, he was around to fuss over Oliver—just a baby, then—and occupy the three of you during the times while your mother was too busy or too sad to be there.

When I had trouble with my tutorial work, he helped out.
He told me stories until I fell asleep when it was hard to settle.
When my favorite toy fell apart, he mended it.
Next.

Thank you very much for this! I’ll have a look through to see what’s going on. Can I check whether this was from loading a save slot before version 4.54 (where the first half of Chapter 4 was uploaded), or was it a new playthrough?

It was from a previous load so that’s probably why. I didn’t think about that

That may be the problem - if you play with a new save and the same thing happens, please let me know!

Hi HPS,

I played Creme de la Creme and enjoyed the writing and especially the setting. School stories in colorful locales are a favorite of mine. Given the relative variance of quality in COG stories, your style and prose was quite pleasing.

I have not tried the Royal Affairs demo (as I like to preserve the experience to be fresh), but I noticed that there seemed to be an added emphasis on politics this time around. I enjoy games that delve into politics (Suzerian is the top bar example), so I was just wondering to what extent they would (reasonably speaking) play a role in this game. Do we get the opportunity outside of Archambault to flex our political skills if we roleplay that way? Make a contribution to the political scene of Westerlin? Are there multiple approaches to conducting politics?

Keep up the good work, I look forward to when both Royal Affairs and Noblesse Oblige come out.

Hello, thank you so much for the kind feedback, and without spoiling too much you will get to have a big impact on Westerlin’s politics on a wider scale, with varied approaches and motivations. I’ve just finished drafting a section where the player’s actions in this area will kick off major branching for the last quarter of the game. It’s a challenge for me, but I’m looking forward to it!

Being a member of the Westerlin Royal family does put the MC at the center of a changing society, you have done very well so far with how our protagonist voicing his opinion here and there can change the whole perception of the Westerlin Parliament,it makes sense for people seeking them out with concerns or merely to see what the next gen of royals want to make of the world.

Looking forward to how much the Accepting population stat can determine at the end of the game, like if you combine it with a Traditional Government does that show a reactionary actitude towards further democratic change?

Also truly I am liking Javi more and more with every new chapter you update, which is shocking giving how bad an impression the character gave me on my first playthrough but that perception has long been destroyed and specially with the latest development damn Javi is such a funny sweetheart.Absolutely love them with my protagonist.

As I will surely push for the double romance with Dominique it will be fun how their interactions will be,if from a cordial start things get warmer bit by bit.

Also could you explain how certain character stats work,For Javi Dutiful vs Individualistic or Dominique Dependent vs Determined or even Asher Bold vs Diffident.I understand the relationships you create vary vastly depending on which aspect of the characters you promove but will love to hear more about it.

Some insight about the Citizen Popularity or the Royal popularity and how can those affect later installments of the plot.

Hi Hannah,

I think that I found a glitch with Chapter 4. First, after romancing Dominque and taking her to the Winter Ball as well as having a high relationship stat with her, she doesn’t attend the Hearthlight party at the Royal Castle. Is this intentional? It seems that the St Martels would make every effort to attend the Hearthlight event. Did Senschal Fabien sabotage Dominque? Anyway something to consider.

In addition, I chose Beaumont to talk to at the Hearthlight Dinner Party and after we ditched the aristocrats bothering her. We went outside but the dialogue switched to the same conversation with Beaumont in Chapter 3 with card playing.

Last it might make for a decent cameo for the CdlC MC and spouse to be talking to Hyacinth before the Prince/Princess approaches her. Just a thought…

Thank you so much, that’s really helpful! I will check that Beaumont scene glitch as that obviously shouldn’t be happening. Can I first check if you were loading a previous save? I know that has caused some issues with one on one scenes, though this issue sounds different to the bug that was mentioned above.

Dominique is intended not to appear at the Hearthlight party as they have some other family stuff going on, but I suspect it’s a bit blink and you’d miss it currently. I will emphasise that a bit more so it doesn’t get lost in the rest of the details.

I like the idea of the CdlC MC appearing a little more often (so it’s not only if you go to Rosario directly). I’m not sure about Hyacinthe as I would like to preserve them being lonely at that stage but I will have a think about fitting them into the party scenes a bit more…

Thank you again for the feedback details!

Thanks for the reply, I started from the beginning and played through Chapter 4. Anyway you have me wondering whether Fabien is looking out for the MC’s interest or if he is on Team Queen Estell.

I really like the story so far. I’ve been repeating it occasionally. But TBH I’m more invested on this one rather than Noblesse Oblige. I also appreciate being able to choose what to wear on certain events and I’m curious if we would be able to communicate with our previous MC especially when I choose Him to end up with Rosario. Looking forward to more Javi teasing lines. I love an enemies to lovers trope.

In Chapter 4 there is a bit of Creme MC chat if they’re with Rosario, and there will be more later on especially if the Royal Affairs MC is close with Javi. There will also be some interaction if the Creme MC is teaching at Archambault or Gallatin.

It’s an interesting thing because I want to be cautious not to make the Creme MC feel out of character or mismatching people’s image of their own character. So it’s a bit of a balancing act but hopefully people will enjoy it!

Thank you for your comments and I’m so glad you’re enjoying

I’m trying to play the demo but Dashing Don isn’t keeping my save. I save it and it’s gone when I try to go back. I’ll try clearing my browser data and see if it helps.

Edit: Yay! Clearing my history worked! My play through is pretty much the same except Elena (my protagonist) is brunette instead of blonde and Asher is enby instead of male.

Hi I recently discovered this game after playing crème de la cream and googling you (I didn’t even know developer sites existed). I’m so excited! But, I have a few questions:
How old is the previous MC?
Will the previous MC have children (optional)?
How do children work for SS couples? Is it adoption or magic? (In Ms.Benton’s tea shop a same sex couple has a baby)

Welcome and I’m so glad you enjoyed Creme de la Creme, that’s so lovely to hear!

The Creme MC is in their early twenties by the time Royal Affairs happens. I haven’t decided the exact timeline but it’s a few years after the end of Creme. I mostly haven’t specified if they have children or not as that’s a decision I’d very much want to leave in the hands of players and it’s a bit more detail than I’d want to go into for the intro questionnaire. Where there’s more specificity is if they married Rosario, where they don’t have children at this stage.

There are lots of same-sex couples with children in-universe and it’s very much a norm in Westerlin. The more technologically advanced ways of having children aren’t invented in the setting, but they do artificial insemination, surrogacy etc, as well as fostering and adoption. No magic needed!
