Royal Affairs Discussion Thread and Romance Guide (Spoilers Within)

Hello! I think first time posting here, but just wanted to say I am really happy to see this game being made. Creme de la Creme was one of the first choice of games I truly enjoyed a lot, and this one is no different. I love the style of writing and options you give in these games. I really love Dominique in this one and I think I will go with their route first once fully finished, I have a sweet spot for old flame being rekindled. So I hope to see more of them in the future! Thank you for all the hard work, truly enjoying it.

I really enjoyed CdlC, and Royal Affairs seems like it’ll be just as fun*.

HOWEVER, maybe it’s just me, but there’s quite a few times that I have no idea whic stat is going to be tested in each choice (e.g., the kayak race after getting the flag). Again, maybe it’s just me not being a native speaker, but I’d really appreciate a (perhaps toggleable, as some people might feel it intrudes in their immersion) mode that gave that info.

*Actually, it might be MORE fun. There certainly seems to have more ROs that I’d be interested in pursuing: right now, Asher, Trevelyan, and Beaumont are catching my eye. I might even give Javi a playthrough, if I’m feeling particularly masochistic.

@SpineCricket Thank you so much, I’m really glad you’re enjoying it and that Dominique has caught your eye!

@JBento That’s really awesome that you’re enjoying and there are ROs you like the look of! I think there’s a stubborn bug in the kayak section which may be contributing to the confusion, but I have also been considering a toggleable mode showing which stats are tested… I will have a chat with Abby and see what she thinks.

Speeeeaking of Beaumont romance, I think I found a bug. When I played cards with her after the club event, I got an option to start the romance, even though I’d already done that when talking to her in the stables (after the ā€œyou got mailā€ scene).

Aha thank you! (Just to check, was that after the Chair 3 kayaking?)

Yeah. You can get an initial [start the romance] at the stables if you follow B after Javi, er, blunders at the you got mail scene, and a second event with that tag on the night after the kayaking event, even if you started it at the stables.

I didn’t test it, can you meet any of the peers after the club event, regardless of what club you pick, seeing as they’re all there anyway? E.g., can you night visit Beaumont if you’re in the Drama club or organising the Winter Ball?

Yes you can hang out with whoever you like - you’re not restricted to the person who’s in your club at that point. Thank you, that’s very helpful - I’ll check it!

I’ve finished drafting Chapter 6, and I’m now at almost 148,000 words! It’s going really well - though this chapter ended up very complicated…

Most excitingly for readers here, I’ve updated the demo with the rest of Chapter 3! In the rest of this chapter, you can go to the party of the season, the Archambault Winter Ball. What will you wear? Who will you go with? Will the Student Council manage to put something good together for the occasion? All this and more in this demo update! I hope you enjoy!

Total wordcount: 90,000 words

I found bugs

in all these options

How strange, someone else mentioned a similar bug with a Javi one on one conversation, but I haven’t been able to replicate any of them - my Randomtest passes fine. Though I don’t want to pass the buck, I’m wondering whether it’s something to do with loading a previous save - did you load a save or was this a new playthrough?

So sorry this has happened and thank you for letting me know!

Yup, I load a save

So I quickly go into the game to play omg was waiting for the update!! However, I tried to spend time with Asher it says line 91: Not a number : false :persevere:

@anon67111821 - I think, though I’m not totally sure, that it may be a save issue - I’ll wait to hear from anyone about whether they got those bugs on a new playthrough before saying for sure though.

@Vanbbyx I’m so sorry that happened and thank you for posting to let me know - was that from loading a save as well? I suspect your game was trying to refer to an out of date variable.

I also suspect that some of these problems are to do with the dashingdon issues that have been happening recently, as I just tried to upload a startup with more save slots and it’s not updating. So - I would recommend holding off from trying the new demo until I’ve waited a bit and can get a clearer picture of what’s happening (and if you have cash spare, perhaps buy a kofi to support dashingdon!).

Edit: the upload seems to be working OK now, hooray! So there are now 6 save slots available. I would strongly recommend playing with a new save, as I suspect at least some of the bugs are due to savegames pulling out of date variables.

I think I found some bugs.

There’s a name missing in the first option here. I took Trevalyan with me. I’ve picked [Start Romance] with Asher. (no option to start Trev romance at this point)

In the next screen, I STILL don’t know who I’ve flirted with:

In a bit of exciting news, I HAVE FOUND A POLY AND IT’S TWO OF MY FAVES:

Incredibly weird thing. If I pick Javi here:

Then when I reach the point where you pick a romantic partner for the ball, Javi’s option doesn’t have a [Start romance] tag, even though none of the options I picked previously have it and the text durign the night visit makes it sound like she responded positively to everything I said. If I visit literally anyone else at night, then taking Javi romantically to the ball has a [Start romance] tag. So, either I’m royally (haha) screwing up when visiting Javi and disabling the romance and the game isn’t effectively communicating that, there’s [start romance] tag missing in one of the options when visiting Javi, or… I dunno?

Also, I think I figured out why I’m enjoying RA more than CdlC. Romancing the Driven isn’t held up until the last 5 minutes of the game! Also, the Driven is NOT the Jerk; Beaumont is formal but they’re not out to make you miserable, that’s the Royal this time around; say ā€œhiā€, Javi. I hope we can find out later WHY Javi hates our guts. Blaise had a understandable reason to have it out for us, but if Javi has one explained in the content so far, it’s in one of my paths not taken.

I think this is a bug; I only asked Beaumont to walk in to the ball with me as a friend, and didn’t do anything romantic before that, yet I’ve apparently made it clear I have feelings for her.

Amazing, thank you all so so much for finding those bugs and letting me know!

I’ve updated the teaser on Dashingdon with the following fixes:

-your wine/juice-tasting partner should now have a name! (you’d hope so, wouldn’t you?)
-clarity about whether you’re starting a romance with Javi or not (tbh I feel like if any character was going to be ambiguous about it, it would be them…)
-Beaumont no longer auto-romances you if you invite them to the ball as a friend (now that IS out of character for them) (it turned out this also happened incorrectly with Dominique, which I fixed as well)
-Vere no longer claims that kayaking with Beaumont results in a joint Archambault-Gallatin victory
-Various typo related corrections, mostly cosmetic

@JBento I’m glad you found the polyamorous option amidst all the chaos!!!

Saving is broken again:

@JBento –

You need to advance beyond the first page and it will work (at least it did for me)

Edit: Also after a restart, the save system worked on the first page for me as well… maybe there was a hosting hiccup?

Saves should be operational again now, fingers crossed
