I think what you’re going for (keeping the stats in the background) is fine, but I think that at least for testing purposes I’d prefer to know what stats are increasing/decreasing so I’ll know which options to choose. If, for example, there’s a part that checks if resolve is high enough, then I’d like to know what options increases the resolve stat. This pretty much doesn’t matter now as it’s still early, but later on when there are fail checks it may become confusing why I failed it. I’d ask myself why I failed the check. Did it have something to do with that option I chose? Or maybe this or that part? (It doesn’t bother me as much now since I’m able to look at the code, but others don’t) Then again, I suppose the whole point of choice games is to explore choices.
Please note that I am not complaining. I’m just sharing my opinion and you’re free to do what you want with your game. If it were me, I’d rely on booleans more like that attempted to save Shin true/false flag, because it then becomes more like traditional choice stories where each choice has consequences instead of invisible stats that are tracked that I don’t even know about.
Anyway, it’s great you already have chapter 2 up so soon. I haven’t finished it yet, but thought I’d comment on the background stats thing.
I’m guessing the takes place during the sengoku jidai; if so, can we change anything about the time period, like effect who won and stuff like that? Also will we meat different historical figures
Sorry for the late response, midterms ate my week haha
@TonyG thank you for the feedback, I am still figuring out exactly how I want it to develop stats wise. Right now I have booleans that will be tracked throughout the game and WILL influence how the overarching story plays out, but I think for any choices where you can fail based on your stats will only influence that scene, not the entire story. I don’t want people to have to focus on developing one or two stats to beat the game, that breaks some of the immersion (at least for me). I’d love to hear your thoughts on this!
@Random_Person yes, this does take place in the sengoku period, but it is set in its own literal alternate reality. You may meet some of the key historical figures, but they will not necessarily be in the same positions of power or situations. The storyline won’t play out the same, conditions aren’t the same, just some of the overarching themes.
Just a tiny quality of life update tonight, fixed a bug, updated the stats screen, fixed a few variables that were going below zero. Did some more writing but not posted to the public update.
New public update unlocked! Two chapters for y’all, doubled the size of the game to now 23000 words. At the conclusion of chapter 4, i feel like the “introduction” is complete. I’m calling them multiple chapters, but this whole first part could be wrapped up as the basic plot setup haha. Have fun and let me know what you think
Enjoyed the story in my intial pass and looking forward to more and trying some different things.
Will make a note though there might be something off with the troop numbers? Not sure yet but something seems weird or could be smoother not sure yet like I said lol.
Will have some questions after playing again until then keep up the good work.
